Matthew 27:1 | When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. | When morning came all the High Priests and the Elders of the people consulted together against Jesus to put Him to death; | Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death. |
Matthew 27:2 | And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. | and binding Him they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the Governor. | And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler. |
Matthew 27:3 | Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, | Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, smitten with remorse he brought back the thirty shekels to the High Priests and Elders | Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority, |
Matthew 27:4 | Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. | and said, "I have sinned, in betraying to death one who is innocent." "What does that matter to us?" they replied; it is your business." | Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business. |
Matthew 27:5 | And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. | Flinging the shekels into the Sanctuary he left the place, and went and hanged himself. | And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging. |
Matthew 27:6 | And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. | When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, "It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood." | And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood. |
Matthew 27:7 | And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. | So after consulting together they spent the money in the purchase of the Potter's Field as a burial place for people not belonging to the city; | And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries. |
Matthew 27:8 | Wherefore that field has been called, The field of blood, to this day. | for which reason that piece of ground received the name, which it still bears, of `the Field of Blood.' | For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day. |
Matthew 27:9 | Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; | Then were fulfilled the words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, "And I took the thirty shekels, the price of the prized one on whom Israelites had set a price, | Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel; |
Matthew 27:10 | And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me. | and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me." | And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord. |
Matthew 27:11 | And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest. | Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Governor, and the latter put the question, "Are you the King of the Jews?" "I am their King," He answered. | And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so. |
Matthew 27:12 | And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. | When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply. | But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer. |
Matthew 27:13 | Then saith Pilate to him, Hearest thou not how many things they testify against thee? | "Do you not hear," asked Pilate, "what a mass of evidence they are bringing against you?" | Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you? |
Matthew 27:14 | And he answered him to not a word; so that the governor marveled greatly. | But He made no reply to a single accusation, so that the Governor was greatly astonished. | And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised. |
Matthew 27:15 | Now at that feast, the governor was wont to release to the people a prisoner, whom they would. | "Now it was the Governor's custom at the Festival to release some one prisoner, whomsoever the populace desired; | Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection. |
Matthew 27:16 | And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. | and at this time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. | And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas. |
Matthew 27:17 | Therefore when they were assembled, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ? | So when they were now assembled Pilate appealed to them. "Have nothing to do with that innocent man," she said, "for during the night I have suffered terribly in a dream through him." | And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him. |
Matthew 27:20 | But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. | The High Priests, however, and the Elders urged the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to demand the death of Jesus. | Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death. |
Matthew 27:21 | The governor answered and said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release to you? They said, Barabbas. | So when the Governor a second time asked them, "Which of the two shall I release to you?" they cried, "Barabbas!" | But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas. |
Matthew 27:22 | Pilate saith to them, What shall I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say to him, Let him be crucified. | "What then," said Pilate, "shall I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?" But they kept on furiously shouting, "Let him be crucified!" | And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him! |
Matthew 27:24 | When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. | So when he saw that he could gain nothing, but that on the contrary there was a riot threatening, he called for water and washed his hands in sight of them all, saying, "I am not responsible for this murder: you must answer for it." | So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible. |
Matthew 27:25 | Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. | "His blood," replied all the people, "be on us and on our children!" | And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children. |
