Romans 8:1 | There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. | There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus; | For this cause those who are in Christ Jesus will not be judged as sinners. |
Romans 8:2 | For the law of the Spirit of life, in Christ Jesus, hath made me free from the law of sin and death. | for the Spirit's Law telling of Life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the Law that deals only with sin and death. | For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. |
Romans 8:3 | For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: | For what was impossible to the Law powerless as it was because it acted through frail humanity God effected. Sending His own Son in a body like that of sinful human nature and as a sacrifice for sin, He pronounced sentence upon sin in human nature; | For what the law was not able to do because it was feeble through the flesh, God, sending his Son in the image of the evil flesh, and as an offering for sin, gave his decision against sin in the flesh: |
Romans 8:4 | That the righteousness of the law may be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. | in order that in our case the requirements of the Law might be fully met. For our lives are regulated not by our earthly, but by our spiritual natures. | So that what was ordered by the law might be done in us, who are living, not in the way of the flesh, but in the way of the Spirit. |
Romans 8:5 | For they that are according to the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh: but they that are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. | For if men are controlled by their earthly natures, they give their minds to earthly things. If they are controlled by their spiritual natures, they give their minds to spiritual things. | For those who are living in the way of the flesh give their minds to the things of the flesh, but those who go in the way of the Spirit, to the things of the Spirit. |
Romans 8:6 | For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace: | Because for the mind to be given up to earthly things means death; but for it to be given up to spiritual things means Life and peace. | For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace: |
Romans 8:7 | Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. | Abandonment to earthly things is a state of enmity to God. Such a mind does not submit to God's Law, and indeed cannot do so. | Because the mind of the flesh is opposite to God; it is not under the law of God, and is not able to be: |
Romans 8:8 | So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. | And those whose hearts are absorbed in earthly things cannot please God. | So that those who are in the flesh are not able to give pleasure to God. |
Romans 8:9 | But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. Now if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. | You, however, are not devoted to earthly, but to spiritual things, if the Spirit of God is really dwelling in you; whereas if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, such a one does not belong to Him. | You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God is in you. But if any man has not the Spirit of Christ he is not one of his. |
Romans 8:10 | And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. | But if Christ is in you, though your body must die because of sin, yet your spirit has Life because of righteousness. | And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. |
Romans 8:11 | But if the Spirit of him that raised Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised Christ from the dead will also revive your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. | And if the Spirit of Him who raised up Jesus from the dead is dwelling in you, He who raised up Christ from the dead will give Life also to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who dwells in you. | But if the Spirit of him who made Jesus come again from the dead is in you, he who made Christ Jesus come again from the dead will in the same way, through his Spirit which is in you, give life to your bodies which now are under the power of death. |
Romans 8:12 | Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. | Therefore, brethren, it is not to our lower natures that we are under obligation that we should live by their rule. | So then, my brothers, we are in debt, not to the flesh to be living in the way of the flesh: |
Romans 8:13 | For if ye live according to the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. | For if you so live, death is near; but if, through being under the sway of the spirit, you are putting your old bodily habits to death, you will live. | For if you go in the way of the flesh, death will come on you; but if by the Spirit you put to death the works of the body, you will have life. |
Romans 8:14 | For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. | For those who are led by God's Spirit are, all of them, God's sons. | And all those who are guided by the Spirit of God are sons of God. |
Romans 8:15 | For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, by which we cry, Abba, Father. | You have not for the second time acquired the consciousness of being a consciousness which fills you with terror. But you have acquired a deep inward conviction of having been adopted as sons a conviction which prompts us to cry aloud, "Abba! our Father!" | For you did not get the spirit of servants again to put you in fear, but the spirit of sons was given to you, by which we say, Abba, Father. |
Romans 8:16 | The Spirit itself testifieth with our spirit, that we are the children of God: | The Spirit Himself bears witness, along with our own spirits, to the fact that we are children of God; | The Spirit is witness with our spirit that we are children of God: |
Romans 8:17 | And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if we suffer with him, that we may be glorified together. | and if children, then heirs too heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ; if indeed we are sharers in Christ's sufferings, in order that we may also be sharers in His glory. | And if we are children, we have a right to a part in the heritage; a part in the things of God, together with Christ; so that if we have a part in his pain, we will in the same way have a part in his glory. |
Romans 8:18 | For I reckon, that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. | Why, what we now suffer I count as nothing in comparison with the glory which is soon to be manifested in us. | I am of the opinion that there is no comparison between the pain of this present time and the glory which we will see in the future. |
Romans 8:19 | For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. | For all creation, gazing eagerly as if with outstretched neck, is waiting and longing to see the manifestation of the sons of God. | For the strong desire of every living thing is waiting for the revelation of the sons of God. |
Romans 8:20 | For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope: | For the Creation fell into subjection to failure and unreality (not of its own choice, but by the will of Him who so subjected it). | For every living thing was put under the power of change, not by its desire, but by him who made it so, in hope |
Romans 8:21 | Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption, into the glorious liberty of the children of God. | Yet there was always the hope that at last the Creation itself would also be set free from the thraldom of decay so as to enjoy the liberty that will attend the glory of the children of God. | That all living things will be made free from the power of death and will have a part with the free children of God in glory. |
Romans 8:22 | For we know that the whole creation groaneth, and travaileth in pain together until now: | For we know that the whole of Creation is groaning together in the pains of childbirth until this hour. | For we are conscious that all living things are weeping and sorrowing in pain together till now. |
Romans 8:23 | And not only they, but ourselves also, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. | And more than that, we ourselves, though we possess the Spirit as a foretaste and pledge of the glorious future, yet we ourselves inwardly sigh, as we wait and long for open recognition as sons through the deliverance of our bodies. | And not only so, but we who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we have sorrow in our minds, waiting for the time when we will take our place as sons, that is, the salvation of our bodies. |
Romans 8:24 | For we are saved by hope: But hope that is seen, is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? | It is *in hope* that we have been saved. But an object of hope is such no longer when it is present to view; for when a man has a thing before his eyes, how can he be said to hope for it? | For our salvation is by hope: but hope which is seen is not hope: for who is hoping for what he sees? |
Romans 8:25 | But if we hope for what we see not, then with patience we wait for it. | But if we hope for something which we do not see, then we eagerly and patiently wait for it. | But if we have hope for that which we see not, then we will be able to go on waiting for it. |
Romans 8:26 | Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. | In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness; for we do not know what prayers to offer nor in what way to offer them. But the Spirit Himself pleads for us in yearnings that can find no words, | And in the same way the Spirit is a help to our feeble hearts: for we are not able to make prayer to God in the right way; but the Spirit puts our desires into words which are not in our power to say; |
Romans 8:27 | And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints, according to the will of God. | and the Searcher of hearts knows what the Spirit's meaning is, because His intercessions for God's people are in harmony with God's will. | And he who is the searcher of hearts has knowledge of the mind of the Spirit, because he is making prayers for the saints in agreement with the mind of God. |
Romans 8:28 | And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. | Now we know that for those who love God all things are working together for good for those, I mean, whom with deliberate purpose He has called. | And we are conscious that all things are working together for good to those who have love for God, and have been marked out by his purpose. |
Romans 8:29 | For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first-born among many brethren. | For those whom He has known beforehand He has also pre-destined to bear the likeness of His Son, that He might be the Eldest in a vast family of brothers; | Because those of whom he had knowledge before they came into existence, were marked out by him to be made like his Son, so that he might be the first among a band of brothers: |
Romans 8:30 | Moreover, whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. | and those whom He has pre-destined He also has called; and those whom He has called He has also declared free from guilt; and those whom He has declared free from guilt He has also crowned with glory. | And those who were marked out by him were named; and those who were named were given righteousness; and to those to whom he gave righteousness, in the same way he gave glory. |
Romans 8:31 | What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? | What then shall we say to this? If God is on our side, who is there to appear against us? | What may we say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? |
Romans 8:32 | He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? | He who did not withhold even His own Son, but gave Him up for all of us, will He not also with Him freely give us all things? | He who did not keep back his only Son, but gave him up for us all, will he not with him freely give us all things? |
Romans 8:33 | Who will lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth: | Who shall impeach those whom God has chosen? God declares them free from guilt. | Who will say anything against the saints of God? It is God who makes us clear from evil; |
Romans 8:34 | Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, or rather that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. | Who is there to condemn them? Christ Jesus died, or rather has risen to life again. He is also at the right hand of God, and is interceding for us. | Who will give a decision against us? It is Christ Jesus who not only was put to death, but came again from the dead, who is now at the right hand of God, taking our part. |
Romans 8:35 | Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? | Who shall separate us from Christ's love? Shall affliction or distress, persecution or hunger, nakedness or danger or the sword? | Who will come between us and the love of Christ? Will trouble, or pain, or cruel acts, or the need of food or of clothing, or danger, or the sword? |
Romans 8:36 | As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. | As it stands written in the Scripture, "For Thy sake they are, all day long, trying to kill us. We have been looked upon as sheep destined for slaughter." | As it is said in the holy Writings, Because of you we are put to death every day; we are like sheep ready for destruction. |
Romans 8:37 | But in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. | Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who has loved us. | But we are able to overcome all these things and more through his love. |
Romans 8:38 | For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, | For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither the lower ranks of evil angels nor the higher, neither things present nor things future, nor the forces of nature, | For I am certain that not death, or life, or angels, or rulers, or things present, or things to come, or powers, |
Romans 8:39 | Nor hight, nor depth, nor any other creature, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. | nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God which rests upon us in Christ Jesus our Lord. | Or things on high, or things under the earth, or anything which is made, will be able to come between us and the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. |
