Galatians 4:1 | Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he is lord of all; | Now I say that so long as an heir is a child, he in no respect differs from a slave, although he is the owner of everything, | Now I say, As long as the heir is a child, he differs nothing from a bondman, though he be lord of all; |
Galatians 4:2 | But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed by the father. | but he is under the control of guardians and trustees until the time his father has appointed. | but he is under guardians and stewards until the period fixed by the father. |
Galatians 4:3 | Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: | So we also, when spiritually we were children, were subject to the world's rudimentary notions, and were enslaved. | So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the principles of the world; |
Galatians 4:4 | But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, | But, when the time was fully come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born subject to Law, | but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, come of woman, come under law, |
Galatians 4:5 | To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. | in order to purchase the freedom of all who were subject to Law, so that we might receive recognition as sons. | that he might redeem those under law, that we might receive sonship. |
Galatians 4:6 | And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. | And because you are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of His Son to enter your hearts and cry "Abba! our Father!" | But because ye are sons, God has sent out the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father. |
Galatians 4:7 | Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. | Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir also through God's own act. | So thou art no longer bondman, but son; but if son, heir also through God. |
Galatians 4:8 | However then, when ye knew not God, ye did service to them which by nature are no gods. | But at one time, you Gentiles, having no knowledge of God, were slaves to gods which in reality do not exist. | But then indeed, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods; |
Galatians 4:9 | But now, after ye have known God, or rather are known by God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which ye desire again to be in bondage? | Now, however, having come to know God or rather to be known by Him how is it you are again turning back to weak and worthless rudimentary notions to which you are once more willing to be enslaved? | but now, knowing God, but rather being known by God, how do ye turn again to the weak and beggarly principles to which ye desire to be again anew in bondage? |
Galatians 4:10 | Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. | You scrupulously observe days and months, special seasons, and years. | Ye observe days and months and times and years. |
Galatians 4:11 | I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labor in vain. | I am alarmed about you, and am afraid that I have perhaps bestowed labour upon you to no purpose. | I am afraid of you, lest indeed I have laboured in vain as to you. |
Galatians 4:12 | Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all. | Brethren, become as I am, I beseech you; for I have also become like you. In no respect did you behave badly to me. | Be as *I* [am], for *I* also [am] as *ye*, brethren, I beseech you: ye have not at all wronged me. |
Galatians 4:13 | Ye know that in infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel to you at the first. | And you know that in those early days it was on account of bodily infirmity that I proclaimed the Good News to you, | But ye know that in weakness of the flesh I announced the glad tidings to you at the first; |
Galatians 4:14 | And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. | and yet the bodily infirmity which was such a trial to you, you did not regard with contempt or loathing, but you received me as if I had been an angel of God or Christ Jesus Himself! | and my temptation, which [was] in my flesh, ye did not slight nor reject with contempt; but ye received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. |
Galatians 4:15 | What then was the blessedness ye spoke of; for I bear you testimony, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. | I ask you, then, what has become of your self-congratulations? For I bear you witness that had it been possible you would have torn out your own eyes and have given them to me. | What then [was] your blessedness? for I bear you witness that, if possible, plucking out your own eyes ye would have given [them] to me. |
Galatians 4:16 | Am I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth? | Can it be that I have become your enemy through speaking the truth to you? | So I have become your enemy in speaking the truth to you? |
Galatians 4:17 | They zealously affect you, but not well; for, they would exclude you, that ye may affect them. | These men pay court to you, but not with honourable motives. They want to exclude you, so that you may pay court to them. | They are not rightly zealous after you, but desire to shut you out [from us], that ye may be zealous after them. |
Galatians 4:18 | But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you. | It is always an honourable thing to be courted in an honourable cause; always, and not only when I am with you, my children | But [it is] right to be zealous at all times in what is right, and not only when I am present with you |
Galatians 4:19 | My little children, of whom I travail in birth again, until Christ be formed in you, | you for whom I am again, as it were, undergoing the pains of childbirth, until Christ is fully formed within you. | my children, of whom I again travail in birth until Christ shall have been formed in you: |
Galatians 4:20 | I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you. | Would that I were with you and could change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. | and I should wish to be present with you now, and change my voice, for I am perplexed as to you. |
Galatians 4:21 | Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? | Tell me you who want to continue to be subject to Law will you not listen to the Law? | Tell me, ye who are desirous of being under law, do ye not listen to the law? |
Galatians 4:22 | For it is written, that Abraham had two sons; the one by a bond-maid, the other by a free-woman. | For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave-girl and one by the free woman. | For it is written that Abraham had two sons; one of the maid servant, and one of the free woman. |
Galatians 4:23 | But he who was of the bond-woman, was born according to the flesh; but he of the free-woman was by promise. | But we see that the child of the slave-girl was born in the common course of nature; but the child of the free woman in fulfilment of the promise. | But he [that was] of the maid servant was born according to flesh, and he [that was] of the free woman through the promise. |
Galatians 4:24 | Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. | All this is allegorical; for the women represent two Covenants. One has its origin on Mount Sinai, and bears children destined for slavery. | Which things have an allegorical sense; for these are two covenants: one from mount Sinai, gendering to bondage, which is Hagar. |
Galatians 4:25 | For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. | This is Hagar; for the name Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, which is in bondage together with her children. | For Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which [is] now, for she is in bondage with her children; |
Galatians 4:26 | But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. | But the Jerusalem which is above is free, and *she* is *our* mother. | but the Jerusalem above is free, which is our mother. |
Galatians 4:27 | For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she who hath a husband. | For it is written, "Rejoice, thou barren woman that bearest not, break forth into a joyful cry, thou that dost not travail with child. For the desolate woman has many children more indeed than she who has the husband." | For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break out and cry, thou that travailest not; because the children of the desolate are more numerous than [those] of her that has a husband. |
Galatians 4:28 | Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. | But you, brethren, like Isaac, are children born in fulfilment of a promise. | But *ye*, brethren, after the pattern of Isaac, are children of promise. |
Galatians 4:29 | But as then he that was born according to the flesh persecuted him that was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. | Yet just as, at that time, the child born in the common course of nature persecuted the one whose birth was due to the power of the Spirit, so it is now. | But as then he that was born according to flesh persecuted him [that was born] according to Spirit, so also [it is] now. |
Galatians 4:30 | Nevertheless, what saith the scripture? Cast out the bond-woman and her son: for the son of the bond-woman shall not be heir with the son of the free-woman. | But what says the Scripture? "Send away the slave-girl and her son, for never shall the slave-girl's son share the inheritance with the son of the free woman." | But what says the scripture? Cast out the maid servant and her son; for the son of the maid servant shall not inherit with the son of the free woman. |
Galatians 4:31 | So then, brethren, we are not children of the bond-woman, but of the free. | Therefore, brethren, since we are not the children of a slave-girl, but of the free woman | So then, brethren, we are not maid servant's children, but [children] of the free woman. |
