Matthew 20:1For the kingdom of heaven is like to a man that is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard."For the Kingdom of the Heavens is like an employer who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard,"For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who was the master of a household, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
Matthew 20:2And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.and having made an agreement with them for a shilling a day, sent them into his vineyard.When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
Matthew 20:3And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place,About nine o'clock he went out and saw others loitering in the market-place.He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace.
Matthew 20:4And said to them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatever is right, I will give you. And they departed.To these also he said, "`You also, go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.'To them he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went their way.
Matthew 20:5Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise."So they went. Again about twelve, and about three o'clock, he went out and did the same.Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.
Matthew 20:6And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith to them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?And going out about five o'clock he found others loitering, and he asked them, "`Why have you been standing here all day long, doing nothing?'About the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle. He said to them, 'Why do you stand here all day idle?'
Matthew 20:7They say to him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatever is right, that shall ye receive."`Because no one has hired us,' they replied. "`You also, go into the vineyard,' he said.They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is right.'
Matthew 20:8So when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward, Call the laborers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last to the first."When evening came, the master said to his steward, "`Call the men and pay them their wages. Begin with the last set and finish with the first.'When evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last to the first.'
Matthew 20:9And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny."When those came who had begun at five o'clock, they received a shilling apiece;When they who were hired at about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius.
Matthew 20:10But when the first came, they supposed that they should receive more; and they likewise received every man a penny.and when the first came, they expected to get more, but they also each got the shilling.When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise each received a denarius.
Matthew 20:11And when they had received it, they murmured against the master of the house.So when they had received it, they grumbled against the employer, saying,When they received it, they murmured against the master of the household,
Matthew 20:12Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day."`These who came last have done only one hour's work, and you have put them on a level with us who have worked the whole day and have borne the scorching heat.'saying, 'These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat!'
Matthew 20:13But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny?"`My friend,' he answered to one of them, `I am doing you no injustice. Did you not agree with me for a shilling?But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Didn't you agree with me for a denarius?
Matthew 20:14Take that which is thine, and depart: I will give to this last, even as to thee.Take your money and go. I choose to give this last comer just as much as I give you.Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my will to give to this last just as much as to you.
Matthew 20:15Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? is thy eye evil because I am good?Have I not a right to do what I choose with my own property? Or are you envious because I am generous?'Isn't it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?'
Matthew 20:16So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many are called, but few chosen."So the last shall be first, and the first last."So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen."
Matthew 20:17And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said to them,Jesus was now going up to Jerusalem, and He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them,As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them,
Matthew 20:18Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the scribes, and they will condemn him to death,"We are going up to Jerusalem, and there the Son of Man will be betrayed to the High Priests and Scribes. They will condemn Him to death,"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,
Matthew 20:19And will deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he will rise again.and hand Him over to the Gentiles to be made sport of and scourged and crucified; and on the third day He will be raised to life."and will hand him over to the Gentiles to mock, to scourge, and to crucify; and the third day he will be raised up."
Matthew 20:20Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children, with her sons, worshiping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.Then the mother of the sons of Zabdi came to Him with her sons, and knelt before Him to make a request of Him.Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, kneeling and asking a certain thing of him.
Matthew 20:21And he said to her, What wilt thou: She saith to him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left in thy kingdom."What is it you desire?" He asked. "Command," she replied, "that these my two sons may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your Kingdom."He said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Command that these, my two sons, may sit, one on your right hand, and one on your left hand, in your kingdom."
Matthew 20:22But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say to him, We are able."None of you know what you are asking for," said Jesus; "can you drink out of the cup from which I am about to drink?" "We can," they replied.But Jesus answered, "You don't know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They said to him, "We are able."
Matthew 20:23And he saith to them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared by my Father."You shall drink out of my cup," He said, "but a seat at my right hand or at my left it is not for me to allot, but it belongs to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give; but it is for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
Matthew 20:24And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.The other ten heard of this, and their indignation was aroused against the two brothers.When the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation concerning the two brothers.
Matthew 20:25But Jesus called them to him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.But Jesus called them to Him, and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.But Jesus called them to him, and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
Matthew 20:26But it shall not be so among you: but whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;Not so shall it be among you; but whoever desires to be great among you shall be your servant,It shall not be so among you, but whoever would become great among you will be your servant.
Matthew 20:27And whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant;Whoever would be first among you will be your bondservant,
Matthew 20:28Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as the redemption-price for many."even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Matthew 20:29And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.As they were leaving Jericho, an immense crowd following Him,As they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
Matthew 20:30And behold, two blind men sitting by the way-side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.two blind men sitting by the roadside heard that it was Jesus who was passing by, and cried aloud, "Sir, Son of David, pity us."Behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!"
Matthew 20:31And the multitude rebuked them, that they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.The people angrily tried to silence them, but they cried all the louder. "O Sir, Son of David, pity us," they said.The multitude rebuked them, telling them that they should be quiet, but they cried out even more, "Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!"
Matthew 20:32And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do to you?So Jesus stood still and called to them. "What shall I do for you?" He asked.Jesus stood still, and called them, and asked, "What do you want me to do for you?"
Matthew 20:33They say to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened."Sir, let our eyes be opened," they replied.They told him, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened."
Matthew 20:34So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.Jesus, being moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes received their sight, and they followed him.
