John 16:1 | These things have I spoken to you, that ye should not be offended. | "These things I have spoken to you in order to clear stumbling-blocks out of your path. | `These things I have spoken to you, that ye may not be stumbled, |
John 16:2 | They shall put you out of the synagogues: yes, the time cometh, that whoever killeth you, will think that he doeth God service. | You will be excluded from the synagogues; nay more, the time is coming when any one who has murdered one of you will suppose he is offering service to God. | out of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God; |
John 16:3 | And these things will they do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. | And they will do these things because they have failed to recognize the Father and to discover who I am. | and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me. |
John 16:4 | But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not to you at the beginning, because I was with you. | But I have spoken these things to you in order that when the time for their accomplishment comes you may remember them, and may recollect that I told you. I did not, however, tell you all this at first, because I was still with you. | `But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said [them] to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you; |
John 16:5 | But now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? | But now I an returning to Him who sent me; and not one of you asks me where I am going. | and now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go? |
John 16:6 | But because I have said these things to you, sorrow hath filled your heart. | But grief has filled your hearts because I have said all this to you. | but because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart. |
John 16:7 | Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I depart; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you. | "Yet it is the truth that I am telling you it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. | `But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you; |
John 16:8 | And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: | And He, when He comes, will convict the world in respect of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement; | and having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment; |
John 16:9 | Of sin, because they believe not on me; | of sin, because they do not believe in me; | concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me; |
John 16:10 | Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; | of righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me; | and concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me; |
John 16:11 | Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. | of judgement, because the Prince of this world is under sentence. | and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged. |
John 16:12 | I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. | "I have much more to say to you, but you are unable at present to bear the burden of it. | `I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear [them] now; |
John 16:13 | But, when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all the truth: for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he shall hear, that will he speak: and he will show you things to come. | But when He has come the Spirit of Truth He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak as Himself originating what He says, but all that He hears He will speak, and He will make known the future to you. | and when He may come the Spirit of truth He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you; |
John 16:14 | He will glorify me: for he will receive of mine, and will show it to you. | He will glorify me, because He will take of what is mine and will make it known to you. | He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you. |
John 16:15 | All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore I said, that he will take of mine, and show it to you. | Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit of Truth takes of what is mine and will make it known to you. | `All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you; |
John 16:16 | A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. | "A little while and you see me no more, and again a little while and you shall see me." | a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.` |
John 16:17 | Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? | Some of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What does this mean which He is telling us, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me,' and `Because I am going to the Father'?" | Therefore said [some] of his disciples one to another, `What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?` |
John 16:18 | They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. | So they asked one another repeatedly, "What can that `little while' mean which He speaks of? We do not understand His words." | they said then, `What is this he saith the little while? we have not known what he saith.` |
John 16:19 | Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said to them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that which I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? | Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask Him, and He said, "Is this what you are questioning one another about my saying, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me'? | Jesus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, `Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me? |
John 16:20 | Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice: and ye will be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. | In most solemn truth I tell you that you will weep aloud and lament, but the world will be glad. You will mourn, but your grief will be turned into gladness. | verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become. |
John 16:21 | A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. | A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the babe, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy at a child being born into the world. | `The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world. |
John 16:22 | And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. | So you also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and your gladness no one will take away from you. | `And ye, therefore, now, indeed, have sorrow; and again I will see you, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one doth take from you, |
John 16:23 | And in that day ye will ask me nothing: Verily, verily, I say to you, Whatever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. | You will put no questions to me then. "In most solemn truth I tell you that whatever you ask the Father for in my name He will give you. | and in that day ye will question me nothing; verily, verily, I say to you, as many things as ye may ask of the Father in my name, He will give you; |
John 16:24 | Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | As yet you have not asked for anything in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your hearts may be filled with gladness. | till now ye did ask nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. |
John 16:25 | These things have I spoken to you in proverbs: but the time cometh when I shall no more speak to you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly concerning the Father. | "All this I have spoken to you in veiled language. The time is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language, but will tell you about the Father in plain words. | `These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you. |
John 16:26 | At that day ye will ask in my name: and I say not to you, that I will pray the Father for you: | At that time you will make your requests in my name; and I do not promise to ask the Father on your behalf, | `In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you, |
John 16:27 | For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came from God. | for the Father Himself holds you dear, because you have held me dear and have believed that I came from the Father's presence. | for the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth; |
John 16:28 | I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. | I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." | I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.` |
John 16:29 | His disciples said to him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. | "Ah, now you are using plain language," said His disciples, "and are uttering no figure of speech! | His disciples say to him, `Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou; |
John 16:30 | Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest from God. | Now we know that you have all knowledge, and do not need to be pressed with questions. Through this we believe that you came from God." | now we have known that thou hast known all things, and hast no need that any one do question thee; in this we believe that from God thou didst come forth.` |
John 16:31 | Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? | "Do you at last believe?" replied Jesus. | Jesus answered them, `Now do ye believe? lo, there doth come an hour, |
John 16:32 | Behold, the hour cometh, and is even now come, that ye shall be scattered every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. | "Remember that the time is coming, nay, has already come, for you all to be dispersed each to his own home and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. | and now it hath come, that ye may be scattered, each to his own things, and me ye may leave alone, and I am not alone, because the Father is with me; |
John 16:33 | These things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye will have tribulation, but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world. | "I have spoken all this to you in order that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction. But keep up your courage: *I* have won the victory over the world." | these things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but take courage I have overcome the world.` |
