Matthew 27:1When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.When morning came all the High Priests and the Elders of the people consulted together against Jesus to put Him to death;And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put him to death;
Matthew 27:2And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.and binding Him they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the Governor.and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
Matthew 27:3Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, smitten with remorse he brought back the thirty shekels to the High Priests and EldersThen Judas he who delivered him up having seen that he was condemned, having repented, brought back the thirty silverlings to the chief priests, and to the elders, saying,
Matthew 27:4Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.and said, "I have sinned, in betraying to death one who is innocent." "What does that matter to us?" they replied; it is your business."`I did sin, having delivered up innocent blood;` and they said, `What to us? thou shalt see!`
Matthew 27:5And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.Flinging the shekels into the Sanctuary he left the place, and went and hanged himself.and having cast down the silverlings in the sanctuary, he departed, and having gone away, he did strangle himself.
Matthew 27:6And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, "It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood."And the chief priests having taken the silverlings, said, `It is not lawful to put them to the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood;`
Matthew 27:7And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.So after consulting together they spent the money in the purchase of the Potter's Field as a burial place for people not belonging to the city;and having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers;
Matthew 27:8Wherefore that field has been called, The field of blood, to this day.for which reason that piece of ground received the name, which it still bears, of `the Field of Blood.'therefore was that field called, `Field of blood,` unto this day.
Matthew 27:9Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;Then were fulfilled the words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, "And I took the thirty shekels, the price of the prized one on whom Israelites had set a price,Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, `And I took the thirty silverlings, the price of him who hath been priced, whom they of the sons of Israel did price,
Matthew 27:10And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me."and gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord did appoint to me.`
Matthew 27:11And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest.Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Governor, and the latter put the question, "Are you the King of the Jews?" "I am their King," He answered.And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor did question him, saying, `Art thou the king of the Jews!` And Jesus said to him, `Thou sayest.`
Matthew 27:12And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply.And in his being accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not answer any thing,
Matthew 27:13Then saith Pilate to him, Hearest thou not how many things they testify against thee?"Do you not hear," asked Pilate, "what a mass of evidence they are bringing against you?"then saith Pilate to him, `Dost thou not hear how many things they witness against thee?`
Matthew 27:14And he answered him to not a word; so that the governor marveled greatly.But He made no reply to a single accusation, so that the Governor was greatly astonished.And he did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor did wonder greatly.
Matthew 27:15Now at that feast, the governor was wont to release to the people a prisoner, whom they would."Now it was the Governor's custom at the Festival to release some one prisoner, whomsoever the populace desired;And at the feast the governor had been accustomed to release one to the multitude, a prisoner, whom they willed,
Matthew 27:16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.and at this time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.and they had then a noted prisoner, called Barabbas,
Matthew 27:17Therefore when they were assembled, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ?So when they were now assembled Pilate appealed to them. "Whom shall I release to you," he said, "Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?"they therefore having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, `Whom will ye I shall release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?`
Matthew 27:18(For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.)For he knew that it was from envious hatred that Jesus had been brought before him.for he had known that because of envy they had delivered him up.
Matthew 27:19When he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream, because of him.While he was sitting on the tribunal a message came to him from his wife. "Have nothing to do with that innocent man," she said, "for during the night I have suffered terribly in a dream through him."And as he is sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent unto him, saying, `Nothing to thee and to that righteous one, for many things did I suffer to-day in a dream because of him.`
Matthew 27:20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.The High Priests, however, and the Elders urged the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to demand the death of Jesus.And the chief priests and the elders did persuade the multitudes that they might ask for themselves Barabbas, and might destroy Jesus;
Matthew 27:21The governor answered and said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release to you? They said, Barabbas.So when the Governor a second time asked them, "Which of the two shall I release to you?" they cried, "Barabbas!"and the governor answering said to them, `Which of the two will ye [that] I shall release to you?` And they said, `Barabbas.`
Matthew 27:22Pilate saith to them, What shall I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say to him, Let him be crucified."What then," said Pilate, "shall I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?" With one voice they shouted, "Let him be crucified!"Pilate saith to them, `What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?` They all say to him, `Let be crucified!`
Matthew 27:23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified."Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they kept on furiously shouting, "Let him be crucified!"And the governor said, `Why, what evil did he?` and they were crying out the more, saying, `Let be crucified.`
Matthew 27:24When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.So when he saw that he could gain nothing, but that on the contrary there was a riot threatening, he called for water and washed his hands in sight of them all, saying, "I am not responsible for this murder: you must answer for it."And Pilate having seen that it profiteth nothing, but rather a tumult is made, having taken water, he did wash the hands before the multitude, saying, `I am innocent from the blood of this righteous one; ye ye shall see;`
Matthew 27:25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children."His blood," replied all the people, "be on us and on our children!"and all the people answering said, `His blood [is] upon us, and upon our children!`
Matthew 27:26Then he released Barabbas to them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he ordered to be scourged, and gave Him up to be crucified.Then did he release to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered [him] up that he may be crucified;
Matthew 27:27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered to him the whole band of soldiers.Then the Governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and called together the whole battalion to make sport of Him.then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus to the Praetorium, did gather to him all the band;
Matthew 27:28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.Stripping off His garments, they put on Him a general's short crimson cloak.and having unclothed him, they put around him a crimson cloak,
Matthew 27:29And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews?They twisted a wreath of thorny twigs and put it on His head, and they put a sceptre of cane in His right hand, and kneeling to Him they shouted in mockery, "Long live the King of the Jews!"and having plaited him a crown out of thorns they put [it] on his head, and a reed in his right hand, and having kneeled before him, they were mocking him, saying, `Hail, the king of the Jews.`
Matthew 27:30And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and struck him on the head.Then they spat upon Him, and taking the cane they repeatedly struck Him on the head with it.And having spit on him, they took the reed, and were smiting on his head;
Matthew 27:31And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.At last, having finished their sport, they took off the cloak, clothed Him again in His own garments, and led Him away for crucifixion.and when they had mocked him, they took off from him the cloak, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify [him].
Matthew 27:32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they constrained to bear his cross.Going out they met a Cyrenaean named Simon; whom they compelled to carry His cross,And coming forth, they found a man, a Cyrenian, by name Simon: him they impressed that he might bear his cross;
Matthew 27:33And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,and so they came to a place called Golgotha, which means `Skull-ground.'and having come to a place called Golgotha, that is called Place of a Skull,
Matthew 27:34They gave him vinegar to drink, mingled with gall: and when he had tasted of it, he would not drink.Here they gave Him a mixture of wine and gall to drink, but having tasted it He refused to drink it.they gave him to drink vinegar mixed with gall, and having tasted, he would not drink.
Matthew 27:35And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture they cast lots.After crucifying Him, they divided His garments among them by lot,And having crucified him, they divided his garments, casting a lot, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the prophet, `They divided my garments to themselves, and over my vesture they cast a lot;`
Matthew 27:36And sitting down, they watched him there:and sat down there on guard.and sitting down, they were watching him there,
Matthew 27:37And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.Over His head they placed a written statement of the charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.and they put up over his head, his accusation written, `This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.`
Matthew 27:38Then were there two thieves crucified with him: one on the right hand, and another on the left.At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one at His right hand and the other at His left.Then crucified with him are two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on the left,
Matthew 27:39And they that passed by, reviled him, wagging their heads,And the passers-by reviled Him. They shook their heads at Himand those passing by were speaking evil of him, wagging their heads,
Matthew 27:40And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross.and said, "You who would pull down the Sanctuary and build a new one within three days, save yourself. If you are God's Son, come down from the cross."and saying, `Thou that art throwing down the sanctuary, and in three days building [it], save thyself; if Son thou art of God, come down from the cross.`
Matthew 27:41Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,In like manner the High Priests also, together with the Scribes and the Elders, taunted Him.And in like manner also the chief priests mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,
Matthew 27:42He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he is King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him."He saved others," they said, "himself he cannot save! He is the King of Israel! Let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him.`Others he saved; himself he is not able to save! If he be King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe him;
Matthew 27:43He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.His trust is in God: let God deliver him now, if He will have him; for he said, `I am God's Son.'"he hath trusted on God, let Him now deliver him, if He wish him, because he said Son of God I am;`
Matthew 27:44The thieves also who were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.Insults of the same kind were heaped on Him even by the robbers who were being crucified with Him.with the same also the robbers, who were crucified with him, were reproaching him.
Matthew 27:45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land to the ninth hour.Now from noon until three o'clock in the afternoon there was darkness over the whole land;And from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land unto the ninth hour,
Matthew 27:46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?but about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is to say, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?"and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, saying, `Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?` that is, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?`
Matthew 27:47Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elijah."The man is calling for Elijah," said some of the bystanders.And certain of those standing there having heard, said `Elijah he doth call;`
Matthew 27:48And immediately one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.One of them ran forthwith, and filling a sponge with sour wine put it on the end of a cane and offered it Him to drink;and immediately, one of them having run, and having taken a spunge, having filled [it] with vinegar, and having put [it] on a reed, was giving him to drink,
Matthew 27:49The rest said, Forbear, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.while the rest said, "Let us see whether Elijah is coming to deliver him."but the rest said, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come about to save him.`
Matthew 27:50Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, expired.But Jesus uttered another loud cry and then yielded up His spirit.And Jesus having again cried with a great voice, yielded the spirit;
Matthew 27:51And behold, the vail of the temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom: and the earth shook, and the rocks rent;Immediately the curtain of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom: the earth quaked; the rocks split;and lo, the vail of the sanctuary was rent in two from top unto bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks were rent,
Matthew 27:52And the graves were opened, and many bodies of saints who slept, arose,the tombs opened; and many of God's people who were asleep in death awoke.and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who have fallen asleep, arose,
Matthew 27:53And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many.And coming out of their tombs after Christ's resurrection they entered the holy city and showed themselves to many.and having come forth out of the tombs after his rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.
Matthew 27:54Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.As for the Captain and the soldiers who were with Him keeping guard over Jesus, when they witnessed the earthquake and the other occurrences they were filled with terror, and exclaimed, "Assuredly he was God's Son."And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying, `Truly this was God`s Son.`
Matthew 27:55And many women were there (beholding at a distance) who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him:And there were a number of women there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to His necessities;And there were there many women beholding from afar, who did follow Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
Matthew 27:56Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.among them being Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zabdi.among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Matthew 27:57When the evening was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus.Towards sunset there came a wealthy inhabitant of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who himself also had become a disciple of Jesus.And evening having come, there came a rich man, from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus,
Matthew 27:58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.He went to Pilate and begged to have the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be given to him.he having gone near to Pilate, asked for himself the body of Jesus; then Pilate commanded the body to be given back.
Matthew 27:59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean sheet of fine linen.And having taken the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,
Matthew 27:60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulcher, and departed.He then laid it in his own new tomb which he had hewn in the solid rock, and after rolling a great stone against the door of the tomb he went home.and laid it in his new tomb, that he hewed in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away;
Matthew 27:61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulcher.Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were both present there, sitting opposite to the sepulchre.and there were there Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over-against the sepulchre.
Matthew 27:62Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,On the next day, the day after the Preparation, the High Priests and the Pharisees came in a body to Pilate.And on the morrow that is after the preparation, were gathered together the chief priests, and the Pharisees, unto Pilate,
Matthew 27:63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again."Sir," they said, "we recollect that during his lifetime that impostor pretended that after two days he was to rise to life again.saying, `Sir, we have remembered that that deceiver said while yet living, After three days I do rise;
Matthew 27:64Command therefore that the sepulcher be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error will be worse than the first.So give orders for the sepulchre to be securely guarded till the third day, for fear his disciples should come by night and steal the body, and then tell the people that he has come back to life; and so the last imposture will be more serious than the first."command, then, the sepulchre to be made secure till the third day, lest his disciples, having come by night, may steal him away, and may say to the people, He rose from the dead, and the last deceit shall be worse than the first.`
Matthew 27:65Pilate said to them, Ye have a watch: go, make it as secure as ye can."You can have a guard," said Pilate: "go and make all safe, as best you can."And Pilate said to them, `Ye have a watch, go away, make secure as ye have known;`
Matthew 27:66So they went, and having sealed the stone, made the sepulcher secure with a watch.So they went and made the sepulchre secure, sealing the stone besides setting the guard.and they, having gone, did make the sepulchre secure, having sealed the stone, together with the watch.
