John 11:1Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sisterNow there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.
John 11:2(It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailingIt was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
John 11:3Therefore his sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;`The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
John 11:4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.`But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
John 11:6When therefore he had heard that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was.
John 11:7Then after that he saith to his disciples, Let us ho into Judea again.then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;`Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
John 11:8His disciples say to him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!`The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?
John 11:9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walketh in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world;
John 11:10But if a man walketh in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.`but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.
John 11:11These things he said: and after that he saith to them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;`These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleepeth he will do well.therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;`The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well.
John 11:13Now Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking rest in sleep.but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep.
John 11:14Then said Jesus to them plainly, Lazarus is dead.Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died.
John 11:15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless, let us go to him.and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;`And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him.
John 11:16Then said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go we also, that we may die with him,`Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him.
John 11:17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb.
John 11:18(Now Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs distant.)And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off,
John 11:19And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.
John 11:20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat in the house.Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.
John 11:21Then said Martha to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
John 11:22But I know that even now, whatever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;`but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.
John 11:23Jesus saith to her, Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.`Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again.
John 11:24Martha saith to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;`Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.
John 11:25Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live;
John 11:26And whoever liveth, and believeth in me, shall never die. Believest thou this?and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die to the age;and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this?
John 11:27She saith to him, Yes, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.believest thou this?` she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.`She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.
John 11:28And when she had so said, she went and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;`And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee.
John 11:29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came to him.she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him.
John 11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him.
John 11:31The Jews then who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose hastily, and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth to the grave to weep there.the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.`The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there.
John 11:32Then when Mary had come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;`Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled;Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled,
John 11:34And said, Where have ye laid him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.`Where have ye laid him?` they say to him, `Sir, come and see;`and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.
John 11:35Jesus wept.Jesus wept.Jesus wept.
John 11:36Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!`The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!
John 11:37And some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?`And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died?
John 11:38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
John 11:39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, by this time his body is offensive: for he hath been dead four days.Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;` the sister of him who hath died Martha saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;`Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there].
John 11:40Jesus saith to her, Said I not to thee, that if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?`Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
John 11:41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me:They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;
John 11:42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people who stand by, I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said [it], that they may believe that Thou didst send me.`but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
John 11:43And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;`And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
John 11:44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go.and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.`And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.
John 11:45Then many of the Jews who came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him;
John 11:46But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
John 11:47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and said, What do we? for this man performeth many miracles.the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs.
John 11:48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation.if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.`If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.
John 11:49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said to them, Ye know nothing at all,and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing
John 11:50Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.`nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish.
John 11:51And this he spoke not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;
John 11:52And not for that nation only, but that also he should assemble in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
John 11:53Then from that day forth they took counsel together to put him to death.From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him.
John 11:54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence to a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples.
John 11:55And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves.
John 11:56Then they sought for Jesus, and spoke among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you that he may not come to the feast?`They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast?
John 11:57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him.and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew [it], so that they may seize him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.
