Acts 17:1Now when they had passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews.And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was the synagogue of the Jews,And when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
Acts 17:2And Paul, as his manner was, went in to them, and on three sabbaths reasoned with them out of the scriptures,and according to the custom of Paul, he went in unto them, and for three sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings,And Paul, according to his custom, went in unto them; and for three sabbath days he reasoned with them out of the scriptures:
Acts 17:3Opening and alledging, that it was needful that Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach to you, is Christ.opening and alleging, `That the Christ it behoved to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that this is the Christ Jesus whom I proclaim to you.`Declaring and insinuating that the Christ was to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this is Jesus Christ, whom I preach to you.
Acts 17:4And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas: and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few.And some of them believed, and were associated to Paul and Silas; and of those that served God, and of the Gentiles a great multitude, and of noble women not a few.
Acts 17:5But the Jews who believed not, moved with envy, took to them certain vile fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city in an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring [them] to the populace,But the Jews, moved with envy, and taking unto them some wicked men of the vulgar sort, and making a tumult, set the city in an uproar; and besetting Jason's house, sought to bring them out unto the people.
Acts 17:6And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down, have come hither also;and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud `These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present,And not finding them, they drew Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying: They that set the city in an uproar, are come hither also;
Acts 17:7Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cesar, saying, That there is another king, one Jesus.whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king Jesus.`Whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.
Acts 17:8And they troubled the people, and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,And they stirred up the people, and the rulers of the city hearing these things,
Acts 17:9And when they had taken security of Jason and of the other, they let them go.and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.And having taken satisfaction of Jason and of the rest, they let them go.
Acts 17:10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night to Berea: who coming thither, went into the synagogue of the Jews.And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews;But the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea. Who, when they were come thither, went into the synagogue of the Jews.
Acts 17:11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so;Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, who received the word with all eagerness, daily searching the scriptures, whether these things were so.
Acts 17:12Therefore many of them believed; also of honorable women who were Greeks, and of men not a few.many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few.And many indeed of them believed, and of honourable women that were Gentiles, and of men not a few.
Acts 17:13But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes;And when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was also preached by Paul at Berea, they came thither also, stirring up and troubling the multitude.
Acts 17:14And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul, to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timothy abode there still.and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there.And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul, to go unto the sea; but Silas and Timothy remained there.
Acts 17:15And they that conducted Paul brought him to Athens: and receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed;And they that conducted Paul, brought him as far as Athens; and receiving a commandment from him to Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.
Acts 17:16Now, while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry,Now whilst Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred within him, seeing the city wholly given to idolatry.
Acts 17:17Therefore he disputed in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshipping persons, and in the market-place every day with those who met with him.He disputed, therefore, in the synagogue with the Jews, and with them that served God, and in the marketplace, every day with them that were there.
Acts 17:18Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? some others, He seemeth to be a setter-forth of strange gods: because he preached to them Jesus, and the resurrection.And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, `What would this seed picker wish to say?` and others, `Of strange demons he doth seem to be an announcer;` because Jesus and the rising again he did proclaim to them as good news,And certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoics disputed with him; and some said: What is it, that this word sower would say? But others: He seemeth to be a setter forth of new gods; because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.
Acts 17:19And they took him, and brought him to Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, of which thou speakest?having also taken him, unto the Areopagus they brought [him], saying, `Are we able to know what [is] this new teaching that is spoken by thee,And taking him, they brought him to the Areopagus, saying: May we know what this new doctrine is, which thou speakest of?
Acts 17:20For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears; we would know therefore what these things mean.for certain strange things thou dost bring to our ears? we wish, then, to know what these things would wish to be;`For thou bringest in certain new things to our ears. We would know therefore what these things mean.
Acts 17:21(For all the Athenians and strangers who were there, spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing.(Now all the Athenians, and strangers that were there, employed themselves in nothing else, but either in telling or in hearing some new thing.)
Acts 17:22Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars-hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, `Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious;But Paul standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are too superstitious.
Acts 17:23For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I to you.for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I found also an erection on which had been inscribed: To God unknown; whom, therefore not knowing ye do worship, this One I announce to you.For passing by, and seeing your idols, I found an altar also, on which was written: To the unknown God. What therefore you worship, without knowing it, that I preach to you:
Acts 17:24God that made the world, and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;`God, who did make the world, and all things in it, this One, of heaven and of earth being Lord, in temples made with hands doth not dwell,God, who made the world, and all things therein; he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Acts 17:25Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;neither by the hands of men is He served needing anything, He giving to all life, and breath, and all things;Neither is he served with men's hands, as though he needed any thing; seeing it is he who giveth to all life, and breath, and all things:
Acts 17:26And hath made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellingsAnd hath made of one, all mankind, to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, determining appointed times, and the limits of their habitation.
Acts 17:27That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he is not far from every one of us:to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us,That they should seek God, if happily they may feel after him or find him, although he be not far from every one of us:
Acts 17:28For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also his offspring.for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring.For in him we live, and move, and are; as some also of your own poets said: For we are also his offspring.
Acts 17:29Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like to gold, or silver, or stone graven by art and man's device.`Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man;Being therefore the offspring of God, we must not suppose the divinity to be like unto gold, or silver, or stone, the graving of art, and device of man.
Acts 17:30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:the times, indeed, therefore, of the ignorance God having overlooked, doth now command all men everywhere to reform,And God indeed having winked at the times of this ignorance, now declareth unto men, that all should every where do penance.
Acts 17:31Because he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness, by that man whom he hath ordained: of which he hath given assurance to all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.`Because he hath appointed a day wherein he will judge the world in equity, by the man whom he hath appointed; giving faith to all, by raising him up from the dead.
Acts 17:32And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again concerning this matter.And having heard of a rising again of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, `We will hear thee again concerning this;`And when they had heard of the resurrection of the dead, some indeed mocked, but others said: We will hear thee again concerning this matter.
Acts 17:33So Paul departed from among them.and so Paul went forth from the midst of them,So Paul went out from among them.
Acts 17:34But certain men adhered to him, and believed: among whom was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom [is] also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.But certain men adhering to him, did believe; among whom was also Dionysius, the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
