Luke 20:1On one of those days while He was teaching the people in the Temple and proclaiming the Good News, the High Priests came upon Him, and the Scribes,And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders; And it came about on one of those days, when he was teaching the people in the Temple and preaching the good news,
Luke 20:2together with the Elders, and they asked Him, "Tell us, By what authority are you doing these things? And who is it that gave you this authority?"and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority? That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority.
Luke 20:3"I also will put a question to you, "He said;And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me: And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer:
Luke 20:4"was John's baptism of Heavenly or of human origin?"The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?
Luke 20:5So they debated the matter with one another. "If we say `Heavenly,'" they argued, "he will say, `Why did you not believe him?'And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him? And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him?
Luke 20:6And if we say, `human,' the people will all stone us; for they are thoroughly convinced that John was a Prophet."But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet.
Luke 20:7And they answered that they did not know the origin of it.And they answered, that they knew not whence [it was]. And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from.
Luke 20:8"Nor will I tell you," said Jesus, "by what authority I do these things."And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things.
Luke 20:9Then He proceeded to speak a parable to the people. "There was a man," He said, "who planted a vineyard, let it out to vine-dressers, and went abroad for a considerable time.And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time. And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time.
Luke 20:10At vintage-time he sent a servant to the vine-dressers, for them to give him a share of the crop; but the vine-dressers beat him cruelly and sent him away empty-handed.And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing.
Luke 20:11Then he sent a second servant; and him too they beat and ill treated and sent away empty-handed.And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty. And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing.
Luke 20:12Then again he sent a third; and this one also they wounded and drove away.And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth. And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out.
Luke 20:13Then the owner of the vineyard said, "`What am I to do? I will send my son my dearly-loved son: they will probably respect him.'And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him. And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him.
Luke 20:14"But when the vine-dressers saw him, they discussed the matter with one another, and said, "`This is the heir: let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours.
Luke 20:15"So they turned him out of the vineyard and murdered him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them? And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen?
Luke 20:16He will come and put these vine-dressers to death, and give the vineyard to others." "God forbid!" exclaimed the hearers.He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so.
Luke 20:17He looked at them and said, "What then does that mean which is written, "`The Stone which the builders rejected has been made the cornerstone'?But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner? But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building?
Luke 20:18Every one who falls on that stone will be severely hurt, but on whomsoever it falls, he will be utterly crushed."Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust. Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.
Luke 20:19At this the Scribes and the High Priests wanted to lay hands on Him, then and there; only they were afraid of the people. For they saw that in this parable He had referred to them.And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them. And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them.
Luke 20:20So, after impatiently watching their opportunity, they sent spies who were to act the part of good and honest men, that they might fasten on some expression of His, so as to hand Him over to the ruling power and the Governor's authority.And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor. And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler.
Luke 20:21So they put a question to Him. "Rabbi," they said, "we know that you say and teach what is right and that you make no distinctions between one man and another, but teach God's way truly.And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person [of any], but of a truth teachest the way of God: And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:
Luke 20:22Is it allowable to pay a tax to Caesar, or not?"Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not?
Luke 20:23But He saw through their knavery and replied,But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, But he saw through their trick and said to them,
Luke 20:24"Show me a shilling; whose likeness and inscription does it bear?" "Caesar's," they said.Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Caesar's. Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's.
Luke 20:25"Pay therefore," He replied, "what is Caesar's to Caesar and what is God's to God."And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's.
Luke 20:26There was nothing here that they could lay hold of before the people, and marvelling at His answer they said no more.And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing.
Luke 20:27Next some of the Sadducees came forward (who deny that there is a Resurrection), and they asked Him,And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection; And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him,
Luke 20:28"Rabbi, Moses made it a law for us that if a man's brother should die, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up a family for his brother.and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man's brother die, having a wife, and he be childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Master, Moses said that if a man's brother comes to his end, having a wife, but no children, his brother is to take the wife, and get a family for his brother.
Luke 20:29Now there were seven brothers. The first of them took a wife and died childless.There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died childless; Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children;
Luke 20:30The second and the third also took her;and the second: And the second;
Luke 20:31and all seven, having done the same, left no children when they died.and the third took her; and likewise the seven also left no children, and died. And the third took her; and in the same way, all the seven, without having any children, came to their end.
Luke 20:32Finally the woman also died.Afterward the woman also died. And last of all, the woman came to her end.
Luke 20:33The woman, then at the Resurrection whose wife shall she be? for they all seven married her."In the resurrection therefore whose wife of them shall she be? for the seven had her to wife. When they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for all the seven had her.
Luke 20:34"The men of this age," replied Jesus, "marry, and the women are given in marriage.And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage: And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives;
Luke 20:35But as for those who shall have been deemed worthy to find a place in that other age and in the Resurrection from among the dead, the men do not marry and the women are not given in marriage.but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married;
Luke 20:36For indeed they cannot die again; they are like angels, and are sons of God through being sons of the Resurrection.for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead.
Luke 20:37But that the dead rise to life even Moses clearly implies in the passage about the Bush, where he calls the Lord `The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in [the place concerning] the Bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
Luke 20:38He is not a God of dead, but of living men, for to Him are all living."Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him.
Luke 20:39Then some of the Scribes replied, "Rabbi, you have spoken well."And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said. And some of the scribes, in answer to this, said, Master, you have said well.
Luke 20:40From that time, however, no one ventured to challenge Him with a single question.For they durst not any more ask him any question. And they had fear of putting any more questions to him.
Luke 20:41But He asked them, "How is it they say that the Christ is a son of David?And he said unto them, How say they that the Christ is David's son? And he said to them, Why do they say that the Christ is the son of David?
Luke 20:42Why, David himself says in the Book of Psalms, "`The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right handFor David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand,
Luke 20:43Until I have made thy foes a footstool under they feet.'Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet. Till I put under your feet all those who are against you.
Luke 20:44"David himself therefore calls Him Lord, and how can He be his son?"David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son? David then gives him the name of Lord, so how is it possible for him to be his son?
Luke 20:45Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to the disciples,And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples, And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples,
Luke 20:46"Beware of the Scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and love to be bowed to in places of public resort and to occupy the best seats in the synagogues or at a dinner party;Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts; Keep away from the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes, and to have words of respect said to them in the market-places, and to take the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts;
Luke 20:47who swallow up the property of widows and mask their wickedness by making long prayers. They will be punished far more severely than others."who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation. Who take the property of widows and before the eyes of men make long prayers; they will get a greater punishment.
