Acts 19:1During the stay of Apollos in Corinth, Paul, after passing through the inland districts, came to Ephesus, where he found a few disciples. And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples: And it came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper districts, came to Ephesus, and finding certain disciples,
Acts 19:2"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you first believed?" he asked them. "No," they replied, "we did not even hear that there is a Holy Spirit."and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they [said] unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was [given]. he said to them, Did ye receive [the] Holy Spirit when ye had believed? And they [said] to him, We did not even hear if [the] Holy Spirit was [come].
Acts 19:3"Into what then were you baptized?" he asked. "Into John's baptism," they replied. And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism. And he said, To what then were ye baptised? And they said, To the baptism of John.
Acts 19:4"John," he said, "administered a baptism of repentance, bidding the people believe on One who was to come after him; namely, on Jesus."And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus. And Paul said, John indeed baptised [with] the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on him that was coming after him, that is, on Jesus.
Acts 19:5On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus; And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. And when they heard that, they were baptised to the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:6and when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And Paul having laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
Acts 19:7They numbered in all about twelve men.And they were in all about twelve men. And all the men were about twelve.
Acts 19:8Afterwards he went into the synagogue. There for three months he continued to preach fearlessly, explaining in words which carried conviction the truths which concern the Kingdom of God.And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading [as to] the things concerning the kingdom of God. And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly during three months, reasoning and persuading [the things] concerning the kingdom of God.
Acts 19:9But some grew obstinate in unbelief and spoke evil of the new faith before all the congregation. So Paul left them, and, taking with him those who were disciples, held discussions daily in Tyrannus's lecture-hall.But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. But when some were hardened and disbelieved, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, he left them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
Acts 19:10This went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia, Jews as well as Greeks, heard the Lord's Message. And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. And this took place for two years, so that all that inhabited Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
Acts 19:11God also brought about extraordinary miracles through Paul's instrumentality. And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: And God wrought no ordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,
Acts 19:12Towels or aprons, for instance, which Paul had handled used to be carried to the sick, and they recovered from their ailments, or the evil spirits left them.insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the evil spirits went out. so that even napkins or aprons were brought from his body [and put] upon the sick, and the diseases left them, and the wicked spirits went out.
Acts 19:13But there were also some wandering Jewish exorcists who undertook to invoke the name of Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches."But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And certain of the Jewish exorcists also, who went about, took in hand to call upon those who had wicked spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preaches.
Acts 19:14There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew of high-priestly family, who were doing this. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this. And there were certain [men], seven sons of Sceva, Jewish high priest, who were doing this.
Acts 19:15"Jesus I know," the evil spirit answered, "and Paul I have heard of, but who are you?"And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are ye? But the wicked spirit answering said to them, Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; but *ye*, who are ye?
Acts 19:16And the man in whom the evil spirit was sprang on two of them, over-mastered them both, and treated them with such violence, that they fled from the house stripped of their clothes and wounded. And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And the man in whom the wicked spirit was leaped upon them, and having mastered both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Acts 19:17All the people of Ephesus, Jews as well as Greeks, came to know of this. There was widespread terror, and they began to hold the name of the Lord Jesus in high honour. And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who inhabited Ephesus, and fear fell upon all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
Acts 19:18Many also of those who believed came confessing without reserve what their conduct had been,Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds. And many of those that believed came confessing and declaring their deeds.
Acts 19:19and not a few of those who had practised magical arts brought their books together and burnt them in the presence of all. The total value was reckoned and found to be 50,000 silver coins. And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. And many of those that practised curious arts brought their books [of charms] and burnt them before all. And they reckoned up the prices of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Acts 19:20Thus mightily did the Lord's Message spread and triumph! So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed. Thus with might the word of the Lord increased and prevailed.
Acts 19:21When matters had reached this point, Paul decided in his own mind to travel through Macedonia and Greece, and go to Jerusalem. "After that," he said, "I must also see Rome."Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in his spirit to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, After I have been there I must see Rome also.
Acts 19:22But he sent two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he himself remained for a while in Roman Asia. And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. And having sent into Macedonia two of those ministering to him, Timotheus and Erastus, he remained himself awhile in Asia.
Acts 19:23Now just at that time there arose no small commotion about the new faith. And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way. And there took place at that time no small disturbance about the way.
Acts 19:24There was a certain Demetrius, a silversmith, who made miniature silver sanctuaries of Diana, a business which brought great gain to the mechanics in his employ.For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen; For a certain [man] by name Demetrius, a silver-beater, making silver temples of Artemis, brought no small gain to the artisans;
Acts 19:25He called his workmen together, and others who were engaged in similar trades, and said to them, "You men well know that our prosperity depends on this business of ours;whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth. whom having brought together, and those who wrought in such things, he said, Men, ye know that our well-living arises from this work,
Acts 19:26and you see and hear that, not in Ephesus only but throughout almost the whole province of Asia, this fellow Paul has led away a vast number of people by inducing them to believe that they are not gods at all that are made by men's hands. And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands: and ye see and hear that this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great crowd, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying that they are no gods which are made with hands.
Acts 19:27There is danger, therefore, not only that this our trade will become of no account, but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana will fall into utter disrepute, and that before long she will be actually deposed from her majestic rank she who is now worshipped by the whole province of Asia; nay, by the whole world."and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. Now not only there is danger for us that our business come into discredit, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis be counted for nothing, and that her greatness should be destroyed whom the whole of Asia and the world reveres.
Acts 19:28After listening to this harangue, they became furiously angry and kept calling out, "Great is the Ephesian Diana!"And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesus. And having heard [this], and being filled with rage, they cried out, saying, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians.
Acts 19:29The riot and uproar spread through the whole city, till at last with one accord they rushed into the Theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, two Macedonians who were fellow travellers with Paul. And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel. And the [whole] city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with [them] Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul.
Acts 19:30Then Paul would have liked to go in and address the people, but the disciples would not let him do so.And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. But Paul intending to go in to the people, the disciples suffered him not;
Acts 19:31A few of the public officials, too, who were friendly to him, sent repeated messages entreating him not to venture into the Theatre. And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre. and some of the Asiarchs also, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to throw himself into the theatre.
Acts 19:32The people, meanwhile, kept shouting, some one thing and some another; for the assembly was all uproar and confusion, and the greater part had no idea why they had come together. Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. Different persons therefore cried out some different thing; for the assembly was tumultuous, and the most did not know for what cause they had come together.
Acts 19:33Then some of the people crowded round Alexander, whom the Jews had pushed forward; and Alexander, motioning with his hand to get silence, was prepared to make a defence to the people. And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defense unto the people. But from among the crowd they put forward Alexander, the Jews pushing him forward. And Alexander, beckoning with his hand, would have made a defence to the people.
Acts 19:34No sooner, however, did they see that he was a Jew, than there arose from them all one roar of shouting, lasting about two hours. "Great is the Ephesian Diana," they said. But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. But, recognising that he was a Jew, there was one cry from all, shouting for about two hours, Great [is] Artemis of the Ephesians.
Acts 19:35At length the Recorder quieted them down. "Men of Ephesus," he said, "who is there of all mankind that needs to be told that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Diana and of the image which fell down from Zeus? And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the [image] which fell down from Jupiter? And the townclerk, having quieted the crowd, said, Ephesians, what man is there then who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of Artemis the great, and of the [image] which fell down from heaven?
Acts 19:36These facts, then, being unquestioned, it becomes you to maintain your self-control and not act recklessly.Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash. These things therefore being undeniable, it is necessary that ye should be calm and do nothing headlong.
Acts 19:37For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. For ye have brought [hither] these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. For ye have brought these men, [who are] neither temple-plunderers, nor speak injuriously of your goddess.
Acts 19:38If, however, Demetrius and the mechanics who support his contention have a grievance against any one, there are Assize-days and there are Proconsuls: let the persons interested accuse one another. If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another. If therefore Demetrius and the artisans who [are] with him have a matter against any one, the courts are being held, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.
Acts 19:39But if you desire anything further, it will have to be settled in the regular assembly. But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. But if ye inquire anything concerning other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
Acts 19:40For in connexion with to-day's proceedings there is danger of our being charged with attempted insurrection, there having been no real reason for this riot; nor shall we be able to justify the behaviour of this disorderly mob."For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause [for it]: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse. For also we are in danger to be put in accusation for sedition for this [affair] of to-day, no cause existing in reference to which we shall be able to give a reason for this concourse.
Acts 19:41With these words he dismissed the assembly. And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly. And having said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
