Hebrews 5:1 | For every High Priest is chosen from among men, and is appointed to act on behalf of men in matters relating to God, in order to offer both gifts and sin-offerings, | For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: | For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
Hebrews 5:2 | and must be one who is able to bear patiently with the ignorant and erring, because he himself also is beset with infirmity. | who can bear gently with the ignorant and erring, for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity; | The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness. |
Hebrews 5:3 | And for this reason he is required to offer sin-offerings not only for the people but also for himself. | and by reason thereof is bound, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. | Because of this, he must offer sacrifices for sins for the people, as well as for himself. |
Hebrews 5:4 | And no one takes this honourable office upon himself, but only accepts it when called to it by God, as Aaron was. | And no man taketh the honor unto himself, but when he is called of God, even as was Aaron. | No man takes this honor on himself, but he is called by God, just like Aaron was. |
Hebrews 5:5 | So Christ also did not claim for Himself the honour of being made High Priest, but was appointed to it by Him who said to Him, "My Son art Thou: I have to-day become Thy Father;" | So Christ also glorified not himself to be made a high priest, but he that spake unto him, Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten thee: | So also Christ didn't glorify himself to be made a high priest, but he who said to him, "You are my Son. Today I have become your father." |
Hebrews 5:6 | as also in another passage He says, "Thou art a priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek." | as he saith also in another [place,] Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchizedek. | As he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, After the order of Melchizedek." |
Hebrews 5:7 | For Jesus during his earthly life offered up prayers and entreaties, crying aloud and weeping as He pleaded with Him who was able to bring Him in safety out of death, and He was delivered from the terror from which He shrank. | Who in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear, | Who in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear, |
Hebrews 5:8 | Although He was God's Son, yet He learned obedience from the sufferings which He endured; | though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; | though he was a Son, yet learned obedience by the things which he suffered; |
Hebrews 5:9 | and so, having been made perfect, He became to all who obey Him the source and giver of eternal salvation. | and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation; | and having been made perfect, he became to all of those who obey him the author of eternal salvation, |
Hebrews 5:10 | For God Himself addresses Him as a High Priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek. | named of God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. | named by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. |
Hebrews 5:11 | Concerning Him we have much to say, and much that it would be difficult to make clear to you, since you have become so dull of apprehension. | Of whom we have many things to say, and hard of interpretation, seeing ye are become dull of hearing. | Of whom we have many words to say, and hard to interpret, seeing you have become dull of hearing. |
Hebrews 5:12 | For although, considering the long time you have been believers, you ought now to be teachers of others, you really need some one to teach you over again the very rudiments of the truths of God, and you have come to require milk instead of solid food. | For when by reason of the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need again that some one teach you the rudiments of the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of solid food. | For when by reason of the time you ought to be teachers, you again need to have someone teach you the rudiments of the first principles of the oracles of God. You have come to need milk, and not solid food. |
Hebrews 5:13 | By people who live on milk I mean those who are imperfectly acquainted with the teaching concerning righteousness. | For every one that partaketh of milk is without experience of the word of righteousness; for he is a babe. | For everyone who lives on milk is not experienced in the word of righteousness, for he is a baby. |
Hebrews 5:14 | Such persons are mere babes. But solid food is for adults that is, for those who through constant practice have their spiritual faculties carefully trained to distinguish good from evil. | But solid food is for fullgrown men, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil. | But solid food is for full grown men, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil. |
