John 16:1 | "These things I have spoken to you in order to clear stumbling-blocks out of your path. | These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be caused to stumble. | "These things have I spoken to you, so that you wouldn't be caused to stumble. |
John 16:2 | You will be excluded from the synagogues; nay more, the time is coming when any one who has murdered one of you will suppose he is offering service to God. | They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. | They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time comes that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God. |
John 16:3 | And they will do these things because they have failed to recognize the Father and to discover who I am. | And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me. | They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. |
John 16:4 | But I have spoken these things to you in order that when the time for their accomplishment comes you may remember them, and may recollect that I told you. I did not, however, tell you all this at first, because I was still with you. | But these things have I spoken unto you, that when their hour is come, ye may remember them, how that I told you. And these things I said not unto you from the beginning, because I was with you. | But I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn't tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. |
John 16:5 | But now I an returning to Him who sent me; and not one of you asks me where I am going. | But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? | But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' |
John 16:6 | But grief has filled your hearts because I have said all this to you. | But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. | But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart. |
John 16:7 | "Yet it is the truth that I am telling you it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. | Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. | Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don't go away, the Counselor won't come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. |
John 16:8 | And He, when He comes, will convict the world in respect of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement; | And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: | When he has come, he will convict the world in respect to sin, and righteousness, and judgment; |
John 16:9 | of sin, because they do not believe in me; | of sin, because they believe not on me; | of sin, because they don't believe in me; |
John 16:10 | of righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me; | of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; | of righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you see me no more; |
John 16:11 | of judgement, because the Prince of this world is under sentence. | of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged. | of judgment, because the prince of this world has been judged. |
John 16:12 | "I have much more to say to you, but you are unable at present to bear the burden of it. | I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. | I have yet many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now. |
John 16:13 | But when He has come the Spirit of Truth He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak as Himself originating what He says, but all that He hears He will speak, and He will make known the future to you. | Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, [these] shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. | However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever things he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you the things that are to come. |
John 16:14 | He will glorify me, because He will take of what is mine and will make it known to you. | He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare [it] unto you. | He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you. |
John 16:15 | Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit of Truth takes of what is mine and will make it known to you. | All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare [it] unto you. | All things whatever the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he takes of mine, and will declare it to you. |
John 16:16 | "A little while and you see me no more, and again a little while and you shall see me." | A little while, and ye behold me no more; and again a little while, and ye shall see me. | A little while, and you will not see me. Again a little while, and you will see me." |
John 16:17 | Some of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What does this mean which He is telling us, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me,' and `Because I am going to the Father'?" | [Some] of his disciples therefore said one to another, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye behold me not; and again a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? | Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and you won't see me, and again a little while, and you will see me;' and, 'Because I go to the Father?'" |
John 16:18 | So they asked one another repeatedly, "What can that `little while' mean which He speaks of? We do not understand His words." | They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? We know not what he saith. | They said therefore, "What is this that he says, 'A little while?' We don't know what he is saying." |
John 16:19 | Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask Him, and He said, "Is this what you are questioning one another about my saying, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me'? | Jesus perceived that they were desirous to ask him, and he said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, A little while, and ye behold me not, and again a little while, and ye shall see me? | Therefore Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, "Do you inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, 'A little while, and you won't see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?' |
John 16:20 | In most solemn truth I tell you that you will weep aloud and lament, but the world will be glad. You will mourn, but your grief will be turned into gladness. | Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. | Most assuredly I tell you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. |
John 16:21 | A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the babe, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy at a child being born into the world. | A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but when she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for the joy that a man is born into the world. | A woman, when she is in travail, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn't remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a child is born into the world. |
John 16:22 | So you also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and your gladness no one will take away from you. | And ye therefore now have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one taketh away from you. | You therefore now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. |
John 16:23 | You will put no questions to me then. "In most solemn truth I tell you that whatever you ask the Father for in my name He will give you. | And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name. | In that day you will ask me no question. Most assuredly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father, he will give it to you in my name. |
John 16:24 | As yet you have not asked for anything in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your hearts may be filled with gladness. | Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be made full. | Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full. |
John 16:25 | "All this I have spoken to you in veiled language. The time is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language, but will tell you about the Father in plain words. | These things have I spoken unto you in dark sayings: the hour cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings, but shall tell you plainly of the Father. | I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time comes when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. |
John 16:26 | At that time you will make your requests in my name; and I do not promise to ask the Father on your behalf, | In that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you; | In that day you will ask in my name; and I don't say to you, that I will pray to the Father for you, |
John 16:27 | for the Father Himself holds you dear, because you have held me dear and have believed that I came from the Father's presence. | for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father. | for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from God. |
John 16:28 | I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." | I came out from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go unto the Father. | I came out from the Father, and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world, and go to the Father." |
John 16:29 | "Ah, now you are using plain language," said His disciples, "and are uttering no figure of speech! | His disciples say, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no dark saying. | His disciples said to him, "Behold, now you speak plainly, and speak no figures of speech. |
John 16:30 | Now we know that you have all knowledge, and do not need to be pressed with questions. Through this we believe that you came from God." | Now know we that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. | Now we know that you know all things, and don't need for anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came forth from God." |
John 16:31 | "Do you at last believe?" replied Jesus. | Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? | Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? |
John 16:32 | "Remember that the time is coming, nay, has already come, for you all to be dispersed each to his own home and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. | Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and [yet] I am not alone, because the Father is with me. | Behold, the time comes, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, everyone to his own place, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. |
John 16:33 | "I have spoken all this to you in order that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction. But keep up your courage: *I* have won the victory over the world." | These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye may have peace. In the world ye have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. | I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up! I have overcome the world." |
