John 4:1Now as soon as the Master was aware that the Pharisees had heard it said, "Jesus is gaining and baptizing more disciples than John"Now when it was clear to the Lord that word had come to the ears of the Pharisees that Jesus was making more disciples than John and was giving them baptismWhen therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptises more disciples than John
John 4:2though Jesus Himself did not baptize them, but His disciples did(Though, in fact, it was his disciples who gave baptism, not Jesus himself),(however, Jesus himself did not baptise, but his disciples),
John 4:3He left Judaea and returned to Galilee.He went out of Judaea into Galilee again.he left Judaea and went away again unto Galilee.
John 4:4His road lay through Samaria,And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.And he must needs pass through Samaria.
John 4:5and so He came to Sychar, a town in Samaria near the piece of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.So he came to a town of Samaria which was named Sychar, near to the bit of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph:He comes therefore to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
John 4:6Jacob's Well was there: and accordingly Jesus, tired out with His journey, sat down by the well to rest. It was about six o'clock in the evening.Now Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, being tired after his journey, was resting by the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.
John 4:7Presently there came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus asked her to give Him some water;A woman of Samaria came to get water, and Jesus said to her, Give me some water.A woman comes out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drink
John 4:8for His disciples were gone to the town to buy provisions.For his disciples had gone to the town to get food.(for his disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions).
John 4:9"How is it," replied the woman, "that a Jew like you asks me, who am a woman and a Samaritan, for water?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)The woman of Samaria said to him, Why do you, a Jew, make a request for water to me, a woman of Samaria? She said this because Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria.The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How dost thou, being a Jew, ask to drink of me who am a Samaritan woman? for Jews have no intercourse with Samaritans.
John 4:10"If you had known God's free gift," replied Jesus, "and who it is that said to you, `Give me some water,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."In answer Jesus said, If you had knowledge of what God gives freely and who it is who says to you, Give me water, you would make your prayer to him, and he would give you living water.Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
John 4:11"Sir," she said, "you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; so where can you get the living water from?The woman said to him, Sir, you have no vessel and the fountain is deep; from where will you get the living water?The woman says to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water?
John 4:12Are you greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us the well, and himself drank from it, as did also his sons and his cattle?"Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the fountain and took the water of it himself, with his children and his cattle?Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
John 4:13"Every one," replied Jesus, "who drinks any of this water will be thirsty again;Jesus said to her, Everyone who takes this water will be in need of it again:Jesus answered and said to her, Every one who drinks of this water shall thirst again;
John 4:14but whoever drinks any of the water that I shall give him will never, never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become a fountain within him of water springing up for the Life of the Ages."But whoever takes the water I give him will never be in need of drink again; for the water I give him will become in him a fountain of eternal life.but whosoever drinks of the water which I shall give him shall never thirst for ever, but the water which I shall give him shall become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.
John 4:15"Sir," said the woman, "give me that water, that I may never be thirsty, nor continually come all the way here to draw from the well."The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be in need again of drink and will not have to come all this way for it.The woman says to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst nor come here to draw.
John 4:16"Go and call your husband," said Jesus; "and come back."Jesus said to her, Go, get your husband and come back here with him.Jesus says to her, Go, call thy husband, and come here.
John 4:17"I have no husband," she replied. "You rightly say that you have no husband," said Jesus;In answer, the woman said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have said rightly, I have no husband:The woman answered and said, I have not a husband. Jesus says to her, Thou hast well said, I have not a husband;
John 4:18"for you have had five husbands, and the man you have at present is not your husband. You have spoken the truth in saying that."You have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband: that was truly said.for thou hast had five husbands, and he whom now thou hast is not thy husband: this thou hast spoken truly.
John 4:19"Sir," replied the woman, "I see that you are a Prophet.The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet.The woman says to him, Sir, I see that thou art a prophet.
John 4:20Our forefathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."Our fathers gave worship on this mountain, but you Jews say that the right place for worship is in Jerusalem.Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.
John 4:21"Believe me," said Jesus, "the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.Jesus said to her, Woman, take my word for this; the time is coming when you will not give worship to the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, [the] hour is coming when ye shall neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem worship the Father.
John 4:22You worship One of whom you know nothing. We worship One whom we know; for salvation comes from the Jews.You give worship, but without knowledge of what you are worshipping: we give worship to what we have knowledge of: for salvation comes from the Jews.Ye worship ye know not what; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews.
John 4:23But a time is coming nay, has already come when the true worshippers will worship the Father with true spiritual worship; for indeed the Father desires such worshippers.But the time is coming, and is even now here, when the true worshippers will give worship to the Father in the true way of the spirit, for these are the worshippers desired by the Father.But [the] hour is coming and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for also the Father seeks such as his worshippers.
John 4:24God is Spirit; and those who worship Him must bring Him true spiritual worship."God is Spirit: then let his worshippers give him worship in the true way of the spirit.God [is] a spirit; and they who worship him must worship [him] in spirit and truth.
John 4:25"I know," replied the woman, "that Messiah is coming `the Christ,' as He is called. When He has come, He will tell us everything."The woman said to him, I am certain that the Messiah, who is named Christ, is coming; when he comes he will make all things clear to us.The woman says to him, I know that Messias is coming, who is called Christ; when *he* comes he will tell us all things.
John 4:26"I am He," said Jesus "I who am now talking to you."Jesus said to her, I, who am talking to you, am he.Jesus says to her, I who speak to thee am [he].
John 4:27Just then His disciples came, and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. Yet not one of them asked Him, "What is your wish?" or "Why are you talking with her?"At that point the disciples came back, and they were surprised to see him talking to a woman; but not one of them said to him, What is your purpose? or, Why are you talking to her?And upon this came his disciples, and wondered that he spoke with a woman; yet no one said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?
John 4:28The woman however, leaving her pitcher, went away to the town, and called the people.Then the woman put down her water-pot and went into the town, and said to the people,The woman then left her waterpot and went away into the city, and says to the men,
John 4:29"Come," she said, "and see a man who has told me everything I have ever done. Can this be the Christ, do you think?"Come and see a man who has been talking to me of everything I ever did! Is it possible that this is the Christ?Come, see a man who told me all things I had ever done: is not he the Christ?
John 4:30They left the town and set out to go to Him.So they went out of the town and came to him.They went out of the city and came to him.
John 4:31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Jesus. "Rabbi," they said, "eat something."While this was taking place, the disciples were saying to Jesus, Master, take some food.But meanwhile the disciples asked him saying, Rabbi, eat.
John 4:32"I have food to eat," He replied, "of which you do not know."But he said to them, I have food of which you have no knowledge.But he said to them, I have food to eat which ye do not know.
John 4:33So the disciples began questioning one another. "Can it be," they said, "that some one has brought Him something to eat?"So the disciples said one to another, Did anyone give him food?The disciples therefore said to one another, Has any one brought him [anything] to eat?
John 4:34"My food," said Jesus, "is to be obedient to Him who sent me, and fully to accomplish His work.Jesus said, My food is to do the pleasure of him who sent me and to make his work complete.Jesus says to them, My food is that I should do the will of him that has sent me, and that I should finish his work.
John 4:35Do you not say, `It wants four months yet to the harvest'? But look round, I tell you, and observe these plains they are already ripe for the sickle.You would say, Four months from now is the time of the grain-cutting. Take a look, I say to you, at the fields; they are even now white for cutting.Do not ye say, that there are yet four months and the harvest comes? Behold, I say to you, Lift up your eyes and behold the fields, for they are already white to harvest.
John 4:36The reaper gets pay and gathers in a crop in preparation for the Life of the Ages, that so the sower and the reapers may rejoice together.He who does the cutting now has his reward; he is getting together fruit for eternal life, so that he who did the planting and he who gets in the grain may have joy together.He that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto life eternal, that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together.
John 4:37For it is in this that you see the real meaning of the saying, `The sower is one person, and the reaper is another.'In this the saying is a true one, One does the planting, and another gets in the grain.For in this is [verified] the true saying, It is one who sows and another who reaps.
John 4:38I sent you to reap a harvest which is not the result of your own labours. Others have laboured, and you are getting benefit from their labours."I sent you to get in grain which you had no hand in planting: other men did that work, and you take the reward.I have sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others have laboured, and ye have entered into their labours.
John 4:39Of the Samaritan population of that town a good many believed in Him because of the woman's statement when she declared, "He has told me all that I have ever done."Now a number of the people of that town had faith in him because of the woman's witness: He has been talking to me of everything I ever did.But many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him because of the word of the woman who bore witness, He told me all things that I had ever done.
John 4:40When however the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him on all sides to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.So when the people came to him they made request to him to be among them for a time, and he was there two days.When therefore the Samaritans came to him they asked him to abide with them, and he abode there two days.
John 4:41Then a far larger number of people believed because of His own words,And a great number more of them came to have faith in him because of what he himself said.And more a great deal believed on account of his word;
John 4:42and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe in Him simply because of your statements; for we have now heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world."And they said to the woman, Now we have faith, but not because of your story: we ourselves have given ear to his words, and we are certain that he is truly the Saviour of the world.and they said to the woman, [It is] no longer on account of thy saying that we believe, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.
John 4:43After the two days He departed, and went into Galilee;And after the two days he went on from there into Galilee.But after the two days he went forth thence and went away into Galilee,
John 4:44though Jesus Himself declared that a Prophet has no honour in his own country.For Jesus himself said that a prophet has no honour in the country of his birth.for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honour in his own country.
John 4:45When however He reached Galilee, the Galilaeans welcomed Him eagerly, having been eye-witnesses of all that He had done in Jerusalem at the Festival; for they also had been to the Festival.So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans took him to their hearts because of the things which they had seen him do in Jerusalem at the feast they themselves having been there at the feast.When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast.
John 4:46So He came once more to Cana in Galilee, where He had made the water into wine. Now there was a certain officer of the King's court whose son was ill at Capernaum.So he came to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain man of high position whose son was ill at Capernaum.He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain courtier in Capernaum whose son was sick.
John 4:47Having heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee, he came to Him and begged Him to go down and cure his son; for he was at the point of death.When it came to his ears that Jesus had come from Judaea into Galilee, he went to him and made a request that he would come down to his son, who was near to death, and make him well.He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him and asked [him] that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.
John 4:48"Unless you and others see miracles and marvels," said Jesus, "nothing will induce you to believe."Then Jesus said to him, You will not have faith if you do not see signs and wonders.Jesus therefore said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe.
John 4:49"Sir," pleaded the officer, "come down before my child dies."The man said, Sir, come down before my boy is dead.The courtier says to him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
John 4:50"You may return home," replied Jesus; "your son has recovered." He believed the words of Jesus, and started back home;And Jesus said, Go in peace; your son is living. The man had faith in the word which Jesus said to him and went away.Jesus says to him, Go, thy son lives. And the man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.
John 4:51and he was already on his way down when his servants met him and told him that his son was alive and well.And while he was going down, his servants came to him and said, Your boy is living.But already, as he was going down, his servants met him and brought [him] word saying, Thy child lives.
John 4:52So he inquired of them at what hour he had shown improvement. "Yesterday, about seven o'clock," they replied, "the fever left him."So he put a question to them as to the hour when he became better; and they said to him, The disease went from him yesterday at the seventh hour.He inquired therefore from them the hour at which he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
John 4:53Then the father recollected that that was the time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son has recovered," and he and his whole household became believers.It was clear then to the father that this was the very time at which Jesus said to him, Your son is living. And he had faith in Jesus, he and all his family.The father therefore knew that [it was] in that hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son lives; and he believed, himself and his whole house.
John 4:54This is the second miracle that Jesus performed, after coming from Judaea into Galilee.Now this is the second sign which Jesus did after he had come out of Judaea into Galilee.This second sign again did Jesus, being come out of Judaea into Galilee.
