Mark 5:1 | So they arrived at the opposite shore of the Lake, in the country of the Gerasenes. | And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. | And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. |
Mark 5:2 | At once, on His landing, there came from the tombs to meet Him a man possessed by a foul spirit. | And when he had got out of the boat, straight away there came to him from the place of the dead a man with an unclean spirit. | And immediately on his going out of the ship there met him out of the tombs a man possessed by an unclean spirit, |
Mark 5:3 | This man lived among the tombs, nor could any one now secure him even with a chain; | He was living in the place of the dead: and no man was able to keep him down, no, not with a chain; | who had his dwelling in the tombs; and no one was able to bind him, not even with chains; |
Mark 5:4 | for many a time he had been left securely bound in fetters and chains, but afterwards the chains lay torn link from link, and the fetters in fragments, and there was no one strong enough to master him. | Because he had frequently been prisoned in chains and iron bands, and the chains had been parted and the bands broken by him: and no man was strong enough to make him quiet. | because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn asunder by him, and the fetters were shattered; and no one was able to subdue him. |
Mark 5:5 | And constantly, day and night, he remained among the tombs or on the hills, shrieking, and mangling himself with sharp stones. | And all the time, by day and by night, in the place of the dead, and in the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. | And continually night and day, in the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying and cutting himself with stones. |
Mark 5:6 | And when he saw Jesus in the distance, he ran and threw himself at His feet, | And when he saw Jesus from far off, he went quickly to him and gave him worship; | But seeing Jesus from afar off, he ran and did him homage, |
Mark 5:7 | crying out in a loud voice, "What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? In God's name I implore Thee not to torment me." | And crying out with a loud voice he said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name, do not be cruel to me. | and crying with a loud voice he says, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure thee by God, torment me not. |
Mark 5:8 | For He had said to him, "Foul spirit, come out of the man." | For Jesus had said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit. | For he said to him, Come forth, unclean spirit, out of the man. |
Mark 5:9 | Jesus also questioned him. "What is your name?" He said. "Legion," he replied, "for there are a host of us." | And Jesus said, What is your name? And he made answer, My name is Legion, because there are a great number of us. | And he asked him, What is thy name? And he says to him, Legion is my name, because we are many. |
Mark 5:10 | And he earnestly entreated Him not to send them away out of the country. | And he made strong prayers to him not to send them away out of the country. | And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. |
Mark 5:11 | Feeding there, on the mountain slope, was a great herd of swine. | Now on the mountain side there was a great herd of pigs getting their food. | Now there was there just at the mountain a great herd of swine feeding; |
Mark 5:12 | So they besought Jesus. "Send us to the swine," they said, "so that we may enter into them." | And they said to him, Send us into the pigs, so that we may go into them. | and they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine that we may enter into them. |
Mark 5:13 | He gave them leave; and the foul spirits came out and entered into the swine, and the herd about 2,000 in number rushed headlong down the cliff into the Lake and were drowned in the Lake. | And he let them do it. And the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs; and the herd went rushing down a sharp slope into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they came to their death in the sea. | And Jesus [immediately] allowed them. And the unclean spirits going out entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep slope, into the sea (about two thousand), and were choked in the sea. |
Mark 5:14 | The swineherds fled, and spread the news in town and country. So the people came to see what it was that had happened; | And their keepers went running and gave an account of it in the town and in the country. And people came to see what had taken place. | And those that were feeding them fled and reported it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had taken place. |
Mark 5:15 | and when they came to Jesus, they beheld the demoniac quietly seated, clothed and of sane mind the man who had had the legion; and they were awe-stricken. | And they came to Jesus, and saw the man in whom had been the evil spirits seated, clothed and with full use of his senses, and they were full of fear. | And they come to Jesus, and they see the possessed of demons sitting [and] clothed and sensible, [him] that had had the legion: and they were afraid. |
Mark 5:16 | And those who had seen it told them the particulars of what had happened to the demoniac, and all about the swine. | And those who had seen it gave them an account of what had been done to him who had the evil spirits, and of the fate of the pigs. | And they that had seen [it] related to them how it had happened to the [man] possessed by demons, and concerning the swine. |
Mark 5:17 | Then they began entreating Him to depart from their district. | And they made a request to him to go out of their country. | And they began to beg him to depart from their coasts. |
Mark 5:18 | As He was embarking, the man who had been possessed asked permission to accompany Him. | And when he was getting into the boat, the man in whom had been the evil spirits had a great desire to come with him. | And as he went on board ship, the man that had been possessed by demons besought him that he might be with him. |
Mark 5:19 | But He would not allow it. "Go home to your family," He said, "and report to them all that the Lord has done for you, and the mercy He has shown you." | And he would not let him, but said to him, Go to your house, to your friends, and give them news of the great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy on you. | And he suffered him not, but says to him, Go to thine home to thine own people, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for thee, and has had mercy on thee. |
Mark 5:20 | So the man departed, and related publicly everywhere in the Ten Towns all that Jesus had done for him; and all were astonished. | And he went on his way, and made public in the country of Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him: and all men were full of wonder. | And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him; and all wondered. |
Mark 5:21 | When Jesus had re-crossed in the boat to the other side, a vast multitude came crowding to Him; and He was on the shore of the Lake, | And when Jesus had gone over again in the boat to the other side, a great number of people came to him: and he was by the sea. | And Jesus having passed over in the ship again to the other side, a great crowd gathered to him; and he was by the sea. |
Mark 5:22 | when there came one of the Wardens of the Synagogue he was called Jair who, on beholding Him, threw himself at His feet, | And one of the rulers of the Synagogue, Jairus by name, came, and seeing him, went down at his feet, | And [behold] there comes one of the rulers of the synagogue, by name Jairus, and seeing him, falls down at his feet; |
Mark 5:23 | and besought Him with many entreaties. "My little daughter," he said, "is at the point of death: I pray you come and lay your hands upon her, that she may recover and live." | And made strong prayers to him, saying, My little daughter is near to death: it is my prayer that you will come and put your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and have life. | and he besought him much, saying, My little daughter is at extremity; [I pray] that thou shouldest come and lay thy hands upon her so that she may be healed, and may live. |
Mark 5:24 | And Jesus went with him. And a dense crowd followed Him, and thronged Him on all sides. | And he went with him; and a great number of people went after him, and came round him. | And he went with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed on him. |
Mark 5:25 | Now a woman who for twelve years had suffered from haemorrhage, | And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, | And a certain woman who had had a flux of blood twelve years, |
Mark 5:26 | and had undergone many different treatments under a number of doctors and had spent all she had without receiving benefit but on the contrary growing worse, | And had undergone much at the hands of a number of medical men, and had given all she had, and was no better, but even worse, | and had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent everything she had and had found no advantage from it, but had rather got worse, |
Mark 5:27 | heard of Jesus. And she came in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak; | When she had news of the things which Jesus did, went among the people coming after him, and put her hand on his robe. | having heard concerning Jesus, came in the crowd behind and touched his clothes; |
Mark 5:28 | for she said, "If I but touch His clothes, I shall be cured." | For she said, If I may only put my hand on his robe, I will be made well. | for she said, If I shall touch but his clothes I shall be healed. |
Mark 5:29 | In a moment the flow of her blood ceased, and she felt in herself that her complaint was cured. | And straight away the fountain of her blood was stopped, and she had a feeling in her body that her disease had gone and she was well. | And immediately her fountain of blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was cured from the scourge. |
Mark 5:30 | Immediately Jesus, well knowing that healing power had gone from within Him, turned round in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" | And straight away Jesus was conscious that power had gone out of him; and, turning to the people, he said, Who was touching my robe? | And immediately Jesus, knowing in himself the power that had gone out of him, turning round in the crowd said, Who has touched my clothes? |
Mark 5:31 | "You see the multitude pressing you on all sides," His disciples exclaimed, "and yet you ask, `Who touched me?'" | And his disciples said to him, You see the people round you on every side, and you say, Who was touching me? | And his disciples said to him, Thou seest the crowd pressing on thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? |
Mark 5:32 | But He continued looking about to see the person who had done this, | And on his looking round to see her who had done this thing, | And he looked round about to see her who had done this. |
Mark 5:33 | until the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and threw herself at His feet, and told Him all the truth. | The woman, shaking with fear, conscious of what had been done to her, came and, falling on her face before him, gave him a true account of everything. | But the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had taken place in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. |
Mark 5:34 | "Daughter," He said, "your faith has cured you: go in peace, and be free from your complaint." | And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be free from your disease. | And he said to her, Daughter, thy faith has healed thee; go in peace, and be well of thy scourge. |
Mark 5:35 | While He is yet speaking, men come from the house to the Warden, and say, "Your daughter is dead: why trouble the Rabbi further?" | And while he was still talking, they came from the ruler of the Synagogue's house, saying, Your daughter is dead: why are you still troubling the Master? | While he was yet speaking, they come from the ruler of the synagogue's [house], saying, Thy daughter has died, why troublest thou the teacher any further? |
Mark 5:36 | But Jesus, overhearing the words, said to the Warden, "Do not be afraid; only have faith." | But Jesus, giving no attention to their words, said to the ruler of the Synagogue, Have no fear, only have faith. | But Jesus [immediately], having heard the word spoken, says to the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not; only believe. |
Mark 5:37 | And He allowed no one to accompany Him except Peter and the brothers James and John. | And he did not let anyone come with him, but Peter and James and John, the brother of James. | And he suffered no one to accompany him save Peter and James, and John the brother of James. |
Mark 5:38 | So they come to the Warden's house. Here He gazes on a scene of uproar, with people weeping aloud and wailing. | And they came to the house of the ruler of the Synagogue; and he saw people running this way and that, and weeping and crying loudly. | And he comes to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and sees the tumult, and people weeping and wailing greatly. |
Mark 5:39 | He goes in. "Why all this outcry and loud weeping?" He asks; "the child is asleep, not dead." | And when he had gone in, he said to them, Why are you making such a noise and weeping? The child is not dead, but sleeping. | And entering in he says to them, Why do ye make a tumult and weep? the child has not died, but sleeps. |
Mark 5:40 | To this their reply is a scornful laugh. He, however, puts them all out, takes the child's father and mother and those He has brought with Him, and enters the room where the child lies. | And they were laughing at him. But he, having sent them all out, took the father of the child and her mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. | And they derided him. But he, having put [them] all out, takes with [him] the father of the child, and the mother, and those that were with him, and enters in where the child was lying. |
Mark 5:41 | Then, taking her by the hand, He says to her, "Talitha, koum;" that is to say, "Little girl, I command you to wake!" | And taking her by the hand, he said to her, Talitha cumi, which is, My child, I say to you, Get up. | And having laid hold of the hand of the child, he says to her, Talitha koumi, which is, interpreted, Damsel, I say to thee, Arise. |
Mark 5:42 | Instantly the little girl rises to her feet and begins to walk (for she was twelve years old). They were at once beside themselves with utter astonishment; | And the young girl got up straight away, and was walking about; she being twelve years old. And they were overcome with wonder. | And immediately the damsel arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished with great astonishment. |
Mark 5:43 | but He gave strict injunctions that the matter should not be made known, and directed them to give her something to eat. | And he gave them special orders that they were not to say anything of this; and he said that some food was to be given to her. | And he charged them much that no one should know this; and he desired that [something] should be given her to eat. |
