Mark 8:1About that time there was again an immense crowd, and they found themselves with nothing to eat. So He called His disciples to Him.In those days again, when there was a great mass of people and they had no food, he made his disciples come to him and said to them,In those days, there being again a great crowd, and they having nothing that they could eat, having called his disciples to [him], he says to them,
Mark 8:2"My heart yearns over the people," He said; "for this is now the third day they have remained with me, and they have nothing to eat.I have pity for these people because they have been with me now three days, and have no food;I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat,
Mark 8:3If I were to send them home hungry, they would faint on the way, some of them having come a great distance."If I send them away to their houses with no food, they will be overcome by weariness on the way; and some of them have come from far.and if I should dismiss them to their home fasting, they will faint on the way; for some of them are come from far.
Mark 8:4"Where can we possibly get bread here in this remote place to satisfy such a crowd?" answered His disciples. And his disciples said in answer, How will it be possible to get enough bread for these men here in a waste place? And his disciples answered him, Whence shall one be able to satisfy these with bread here in a desert place?
Mark 8:5"How many loaves have you?" He asked. "Seven," they said. And he put the question, How much bread have you? And they said, Seven cakes. And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.
Mark 8:6So He passed the word to the people to sit down on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves He blessed them, and broke them into portions and proceeded to give them to His disciples for them to distribute, and they distributed them to the people. And he made the people be seated on the earth: and he took the seven cakes and, having given praise, he gave the broken bread to his disciples to put before them; and they put it before the people. And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, he gave thanks, and broke [them] and gave [them] to his disciples, that they might set [them] before [them]; and they set [them] before the crowd.
Mark 8:7They had also a few small fish. He blessed them, and He told His disciples to distribute these also. And they had some small fishes; and blessing them he had them put before the people in the same way.And they had a few small fishes, and having blessed them, he desired these also to be set before [them].
Mark 8:8So the people ate an abundant meal; and what remained over they picked up and carried away seven hampers of broken pieces. And they took the food, and had enough; and they took up seven baskets full of the broken bits. And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up of fragments that remained seven baskets.
Mark 8:9The number fed were about 4,000. Then He sent them away,And there were about four thousand people: and he sent them away. And they [that had eaten] were about four thousand; and he sent them away.
Mark 8:10and at once going on board with His disciples He came into the district of Dalmanutha. And he got into the boat with his disciples straight away, and came into the country of Dalmanutha. And immediately going on board ship with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
Mark 8:11The Pharisees followed Him and began to dispute with Him, asking Him for a sign in the sky, to make trial of Him.And the Pharisees came out and put questions to him, requesting from him a sign from heaven, testing him.And the Pharisees went out and began to dispute against him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him.
Mark 8:12Heaving a deep and troubled sigh, He said, "Why do the men of to-day ask for a sign? In solemn truth I tell you that no sign will be given to the men of to-day."And he was very sad in spirit, and said, Why is this generation looking for a sign? truly, I say to you, No sign will be given to this generation. And groaning in his spirit, he says, Why does this generation seek a sign? Verily I say unto you, A sign shall in no wise be given to this generation.
Mark 8:13So He left them, went on board again, and came away to the other side. And he went away from them, and again got into the boat and went across to the other side. And he left them, and going again on board ship, went away to the other side.
Mark 8:14Now they had forgotten to take bread, nor had they more than a single loaf with them in the boat; And they had taken no thought to get bread; and they had only one cake of bread with them in the boat. And they forgot to take bread, and save one loaf, they had not [any] with them in the ship.
Mark 8:15and when He admonished them, "See to it, be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod,"And he said to them, Take care to be on the watch against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and [of] the leaven of Herod.
Mark 8:16they explained His words to one another by saying, "We have no bread!"And they said to one another, We have no bread. And they reasoned with one another, [saying], It is because we have no bread.
Mark 8:17He perceived what they were saying, and He said to them, "What is this discussion of yours about having no bread? Do you not yet see and understand? Are your minds so dull of comprehension? And Jesus, hearing it, said to them, Why are you reasoning among yourselves because you have no bread? do you still not see, and is it still not clear to you? are your hearts so hard? And Jesus knowing [it], says to them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Do ye not yet perceive nor understand? Have ye your heart [yet] hardened?
Mark 8:18You have eyes! can you not see? You have ears! can you not hear? and have you no memory?Having eyes, do you not see? and having ears, have you no hearing? and have you no memory?Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
Mark 8:19When I broke up the five loaves for the 5,000 men, how many baskets did you carry away full of broken portions?" "Twelve," they said. When I made a division of the five cakes of bread among the five thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? They said to him, Twelve. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say to him, Twelve.
Mark 8:20"And when the seven for the 4,000, how many hampers full of portions did you take away?" "Seven," they answered. And when the seven among the four thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? And they said to him, Seven. And when the seven for the four thousand, the filling of how many baskets of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.
Mark 8:21"Do you not yet understand?" He said. And he said to them, Is it still not clear to you?And he said to them, How do ye not yet understand?
Mark 8:22And they came to Bethsaida. And a blind man was brought to Jesus and they entreated Him to touch him.And they came to Beth-saida. And they took a blind man to him, requesting him to put his hands on him.And he comes to Bethsaida; and they bring him a blind man, and beseech him that he might touch him.
Mark 8:23So He took the blind man by the arm and brought him out of the village, and spitting into his eyes He put His hands on him and asked him, "Can you see anything?"And he took the blind man by the hand, and went with him out of the town; and when he had put water from his mouth on his eyes, and put his hands on him, he said, Do you see anything? And taking hold of the hand of the blind man he led him forth out of the village, and having spit upon his eyes, he laid his hands upon him, and asked him if he beheld anything.
Mark 8:24He looked up and said, "I can see the people: I see them like trees only walking."And looking up, he said, I see men; I see them like trees, walking. And having looked up, he said, I behold men, for I see [them], as trees, walking.
Mark 8:25Then for the second time He put His hands on the man's eyes, and the man, looking steadily, recovered his sight and saw everything distinctly. Then again he put his hands on his eyes; and looking hard, he was able to see, and saw all things clearly. Then he laid his hands again upon his eyes, and he saw distinctly, and was restored and saw all things clearly.
Mark 8:26So He sent him home, and added, "Do not even go into the village."And he sent him away to his house, saying, Do not even go into the town. And he sent him to his house, saying, Neither enter into the village, nor tell [it] to any one in the village.
Mark 8:27From that place Jesus and His disciples went to the villages belonging to Caesarea Philippi. On the way He began to ask His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"And Jesus went out, with his disciples, into the little towns round Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he put a question to his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I am?And Jesus went forth and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea-Philippi. And by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Who do men say that I am?
Mark 8:28"John the Baptist," they replied, "but others say Elijah, and others, that it is one of the Prophets."And they made answer, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, One of the prophets. And they answered him, saying, John the baptist; and others, Elias; but others, One of the prophets.
Mark 8:29Then He asked them pointedly, "But you yourselves, who do you say that I am?" "You are the Christ," answered Peter. And he said to them, But who do you say I am? Peter said in answer, You are the Christ. And he asked them, But *ye*, who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering says to him, *Thou* art the Christ.
Mark 8:30And He strictly forbad them to tell this about Him to any one.And he put them under orders not to say this of him to anyone. And he charged them straitly, in order that they should tell no man about him.
Mark 8:31And now for the first time He told them, "The Son of Man must endure much suffering, and be rejected by the Elders and the High Priests and the Scribes, and be put to death, and after two days rise to life."And teaching them, he said that the Son of man would have to undergo much, and be hated by those in authority, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be put to death, and after three days come back from the dead. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests and of the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise [again].
Mark 8:32This He told them plainly; whereupon Peter took Him and began to remonstrate with Him.And he said this openly. And Peter took him, and was protesting. And he spoke the thing openly. And Peter, taking him to [him], began to rebuke him.
Mark 8:33But turning round and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Adversary," He said, "for your thoughts are not God's thoughts, but men's."But he, turning about, and seeing his disciples, said sharply to Peter, Get out of my way, Satan: for your mind is not on the things of God, but on the things of men.But he, turning round and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, Get away behind me, Satan, for thy mind is not on the things that are of God, but on the things that are of men.
Mark 8:34Then calling to Him the crowd and also His disciples, He said to them, "If any one is desirous of following me, let him ignore self and take up his cross, and so be my follower. And turning to the mass of people with his disciples, he said to them, If any man has the desire to come after me, let him give up all other desires, and take up his cross and come after me.And having called the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.
Mark 8:35For whoever is bent on securing his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News, will secure it.Whoever has a desire to keep his life, will have it taken from him; and whoever gives up his life because of me and the good news, will keep it.For whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it.
Mark 8:36Why, what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What profit has a man if he gets all the world with the loss of his life? For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul?
Mark 8:37For what could a man give to buy back his life? And what would a man give in exchange for his life?for what should a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mark 8:38Every one, however, who has been ashamed of me and of my teachings in this faithless and sinful age, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in His Father's glory with the holy angels."Whoever has a feeling of shame because of me and my words in this false and evil generation, the Son of man will have a feeling of shame because of him, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of man also be ashamed when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
