Matthew 13:1 | That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake, | On that day Jesus went out of the house and was seated by the seaside. | And that [same] day Jesus went out from the house and sat down by the sea. |
Matthew 13:2 | when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore. | And great numbers of people came together to him, so that he got into a boat; and the people took up their position by the sea. | And great crowds were gathered together to him, so that going on board ship himself he sat down, and the whole crowd stood on the shore. |
Matthew 13:3 | He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow. | And he gave them teaching in the form of a story, saying, A man went out to put seed in the earth; | And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow: |
Matthew 13:4 | As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up. | And while he did so, some seeds were dropped by the wayside, and the birds came and took them for food: | and as he sowed, some [grains] fell along the way, and the birds came and devoured them; |
Matthew 13:5 | Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth; | And some of the seed went among the stones, where it had not much earth, and straight away it came up because the earth was not deep: | and others fell upon the rocky places where they had not much earth, and immediately they sprang up out of [the ground] because of not having [any] depth of earth, |
Matthew 13:6 | but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up. | And when the sun was high, it was burned; and because it had no root it became dry and dead. | but when the sun rose they were burned up, and because of not having [any] root were dried up; |
Matthew 13:7 | Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it. | And some seeds went among thorns, and the thorns came up and they had no room for growth: | and others fell upon the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them; |
Matthew 13:8 | But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty. | And some, falling on good earth, gave fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | and others fell upon the good ground, and produced fruit, one a hundred, one sixty, and one thirty. |
Matthew 13:9 | Listen, every one who has ears!" | He who has ears, let him give ear. | He that has ears, let him hear. |
Matthew 13:10 | (And His disciples came and asked Him, "Why do you speak to them in figurative language?" | And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you say things to them in the form of stories? | And the disciples came up and said to him, Why speakest thou to them in parables? |
Matthew 13:11 | "Because," He replied, "while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not. | And he said to them in answer, To you is given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. | And he answering said to them, Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given; |
Matthew 13:12 | For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away. | Because whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have more; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. | for whoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall be caused to be in abundance; but he who has not, even what he has shall be taken away from him. |
Matthew 13:13 | I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand. | For this reason I put things into the form of stories; because they see without seeing, and give ear without hearing, and the sense is not clear to them. | For this cause I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear nor understand; |
Matthew 13:14 | And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: "`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see. | And for them the words of Isaiah have come true, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you: | and in them is filled up the prophecy of Esaias, which says, Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand, and beholding ye shall behold and not see; |
Matthew 13:15 | For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.' | For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well. | for the heart of this people has grown fat, and they have heard heavily with their ears, and they have closed their eyes as asleep, lest they should see with the eyes, and hear with the ears, and understand with the heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. |
Matthew 13:16 | "But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. | But a blessing be on your eyes, because they see; and on your ears, because they are open. | But blessed are *your* eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear; |
Matthew 13:17 | For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them. | For truly, I say to you that prophets and upright men had a desire to see the things which you see, and saw them not; and to have knowledge of the words which have come to your ears, and they had it not. | for verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous [men] have desired to see the things which ye behold and did not see [them], and to hear the things which ye hear and did not hear [them]. |
Matthew 13:18 | "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower. | Give ear, then, to the story of the man who put the seed in the earth. | *Ye*, therefore, hear the parable of the sower. |
Matthew 13:19 | When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side. | When the word of the kingdom comes to anyone, and the sense of it is not clear to him, then the Evil One comes, and quickly takes away that which was put in his heart. He is the seed dropped by the wayside. | From every one who hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand [it], the wicked one comes and catches away what was sown in his heart: this is he that is sown by the wayside. |
Matthew 13:20 | He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy. | And that which went on the stones, this is he who, hearing the word, straight away takes it with joy; | But he that is sown on the rocky places this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, |
Matthew 13:21 | It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls. | But having no root in himself, he goes on for a time; and when trouble comes or pain, because of the word, he quickly becomes full of doubts. | but has no root in himself, but is for a time only; and when tribulation or persecution happens on account of the word, he is immediately offended. |
Matthew 13:22 | He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful. | And that which was dropped among the thorns, this is he who has the word; and the cares of this life, and the deceits of wealth, put a stop to the growth of the word and it gives no fruit. | And he that is sown among the thorns this is he who hears the word, and the anxious care of this life, and the deceit of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. |
Matthew 13:23 | But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.") | And the seed which was put in good earth, this is he who gives ear to the word, and gets the sense of it; who gives fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But he that is sown upon the good ground this is he who hears and understands the word, who bears fruit also, and produces, one a hundred, one sixty, and one thirty. |
Matthew 13:24 | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field, | And he gave them another story, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man who put good seed in his field: | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has become like a man sowing good seed in his field; |
Matthew 13:25 | but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away. | But while men were sleeping, one who had hate for him came and put evil seeds among the grain, and went away. | but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel amongst the wheat, and went away. |
Matthew 13:26 | But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also. | But when the green stem came up and gave fruit, the evil plants were seen at the same time. | But when the blade shot up and produced fruit, then appeared the darnel also. |
Matthew 13:27 | "So the farmer's men come and ask him, "`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?' | And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Sir, did you not put good seed in your field? how then has it evil plants? | And the bondmen of the householder came up and said to him, Sir, hast thou not sown good seed in thy field? whence then has it darnel? |
Matthew 13:28 | "`Some enemy has done this,' he said. "`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire. | And he said, Someone has done this in hate. And the servants say to him, Is it your pleasure that we go and take them up? | And he said to them, A man [that is] an enemy has done this. And the bondmen said to him, Wilt thou then that we should go and gather it [up]? |
Matthew 13:29 | "`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it. | But he says, No, for fear that by chance while you take up the evil plants, you may be rooting up the grain with them. | But he said, No; lest [in] gathering the darnel ye should root up the wheat with it. |
Matthew 13:30 | Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'" | Let them come up together till the getting in of the grain; and then I will say to the workers, Take up first the evil plants, and put them together for burning: but put the grain into my store-house. | Suffer both to grow together unto the harvest, and in time of the harvest I will say to the harvestmen, Gather first the darnel, and bind it into bundles to burn it; but the wheat bring together into my granary. |
Matthew 13:31 | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground. | He put another story before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his field: | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is like a grain of mustard [seed] which a man took and sowed in his field; |
Matthew 13:32 | It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches." | Which is smaller than all seeds; but when it has come up it is greater than the plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and make their resting-places in its branches. | which is less indeed than all seeds, but when it is grown is greater than herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and roost in its branches. |
Matthew 13:33 | Another parable He spoke to them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen." | Another story he gave to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and put in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened. | He spoke another parable to them: The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until it had been all leavened. |
Matthew 13:34 | All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them, | All these things Jesus said to the people in the form of stories; and without a story he said nothing to them: | All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without a parable he did not speak to them, |
Matthew 13:35 | in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, "I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things." | That it might come true which was said by the prophet, Opening my mouth, I will give out stories; I will give knowledge of things kept secret from before all time. | so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from [the] world's foundation. |
Matthew 13:36 | When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field." | Then he went away from the people, and went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Make clear to us the story of the evil plants in the field. | Then, having dismissed the crowds, he went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Expound to us the parable of the darnel of the field. |
Matthew 13:37 | "The sower of the good seed," He replied, "is the Son of Man; | And he made answer and said, He who puts the good seed in the earth is the Son of man; | But he answering said, He that sows the good seed is the Son of man, |
Matthew 13:38 | the field is the world; the good seed these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one. | And the field is the world; and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom; and the evil seeds are the sons of the Evil One; | and the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom, but the darnel are the sons of the evil [one]; |
Matthew 13:39 | The enemy who sows the darnel is *the Devil*; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels. | And he who put them in the earth is Satan; and the getting in of the grain is the end of the world; and those who get it in are the angels. | and the enemy who has sowed it is the devil; and the harvest is [the] completion of [the] age, and the harvestmen are angels. |
Matthew 13:40 | As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age. | As then the evil plants are got together and burned with fire, so will it be in the end of the world. | As then the darnel is gathered and is burned in the fire, thus it shall be in the completion of the age. |
Matthew 13:41 | The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws; | The Son of man will send out his angels, and they will take out of his kingdom everything which is a cause of error, and all those who do wrong, | The Son of man shall send his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all offences, and those that practise lawlessness; |
Matthew 13:42 | and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth. | And will put them into the fire; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | and they shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:43 | Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears! | Then will the upright be shining as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him give ear. | Then the righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He that has ears, let him hear. |
Matthew 13:44 | "The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground. | The kingdom of heaven is like a secret store of wealth in a field, which a man came across and put back again; and in his joy he goes and gives all he has, to get that field. | The kingdom of the heavens is like a treasure hid in the field, which a man having found has hid, and for the joy of it goes and sells all whatever he has, and buys that field. |
Matthew 13:45 | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls. | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader searching for beautiful jewels. | Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls; |
Matthew 13:46 | He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it. | And having come across one jewel of great price, he went and gave all he had in exchange for it. | and having found one pearl of great value, he went and sold all whatever he had and bought it. |
Matthew 13:47 | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts. | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, which was put into the sea and took in every sort of fish: | Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a seine which has been cast into the sea, and which has gathered together of every kind, |
Matthew 13:48 | When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away. | When it was full, they took it up on the sands; and seated there they put the good into vessels, but the bad they put away. | which, when it has been filled, having drawn up on the shore and sat down, they gathered the good into vessels and cast the worthless out. |
Matthew 13:49 | So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous, | So will it be in the end of the world: the angels will come and take out the bad from the good, | Thus shall it be in the completion of the age: the angels shall go forth and sever the wicked from the midst of the just, |
Matthew 13:50 | and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth." | And will put them into the fire: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:51 | "Have you understood all this?" He asked. "Yes," they said. | Are all these things now clear to you? They say to him, Yes. | Jesus says to them, Have ye understood all these things? They say to him, Yea, [Lord]. |
Matthew 13:52 | "Therefore," He said, "remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old." | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house, who gives out from his store things new and old. | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe discipled to the kingdom of the heavens is like a man [that is] a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old. |
Matthew 13:53 | Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed. | And when Jesus had come to the end of these stories he went away from there. | And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these parables he withdrew thence. |
Matthew 13:54 | And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, "Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers? | And coming into his country, he gave them teaching in their Synagogue, so that they were greatly surprised and said, Where did this man get this wisdom and these works of power? | And having come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence has this [man] this wisdom and these works of power? |
Matthew 13:55 | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah? | Is not this the woodworker's son? is not his mother named Mary? and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? | Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? |
Matthew 13:56 | And his sisters are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?" | And his sisters, are they not all with us? from where, then, has he all these things? | And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then has this [man] all these things? |
Matthew 13:57 | So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, "There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family." | And they were bitter against him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour but in his country and among his family. | And they were offended in him. And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, unless in his country and in his house. |
Matthew 13:58 | And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith. | And the works of power which he did there were small in number because they had no faith. | And he did not there many works of power, because of their unbelief. |
