Matthew 5:1Seeing the multitude of people, Jesus went up the Hill. There He seated Himself, and when His disciples came to Him,And seeing great masses of people he went up into the mountain; and when he was seated his disciples came to him.But seeing the crowds, he went up into the mountain, and having sat down, his disciples came to him;
Matthew 5:2He proceeded to teach them, and said:And with these words he gave them teaching, saying,and, having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying,
Matthew 5:3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.Happy are the poor in spirit: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens.
Matthew 5:4"Blessed are the mourners, for they shall be comforted.Happy are those who are sad: for they will be comforted.Blessed they that mourn, for *they* shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:5"Blessed are the meek, for they as heirs shall obtain possession of the earth.Happy are the gentle: for the earth will be their heritage.Blessed the meek, for *they* shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:6"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be completely satisfied.Happy are those whose heart's desire is for righteousness: for they will have their desire.Blessed they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for *they* shall be filled.
Matthew 5:7"Blessed are the compassionate, for they shall receive compassion.Happy are those who have mercy: for they will be given mercy.Blessed the merciful, for *they* shall find mercy.
Matthew 5:8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.Happy are the clean in heart: for they will see God.Blessed the pure in heart, for *they* shall see God.
Matthew 5:9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for it is they who will be recognized as sons of God.Happy are the peacemakers: for they will be named sons of God.Blessed the peace-makers, for *they* shall be called sons of God.
Matthew 5:10"Blessed are those who have borne persecution in the cause of Righteousness, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.Happy are those who are attacked on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven will be theirs.Blessed they who are persecuted on account of righteousness, for *theirs* is the kingdom of the heavens.
Matthew 5:11"Blessed are you when they have insulted and persecuted you, and have said every cruel thing about you falsely for my sake.Happy are you when men give you a bad name, and are cruel to you, and say all evil things against you falsely, because of me.Blessed are ye when they may reproach and persecute you, and say every wicked thing against you, lying, for my sake.
Matthew 5:12Be joyful and triumphant, because your reward is great in the Heavens; for so were the Prophets before you persecuted.Be glad and full of joy; for great is your reward in heaven: for so were the prophets attacked who were before you.Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus have they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:13"*You* are the salt of the earth; but if salt has become tasteless, in what way can it regain its saltness? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown away and trodden on by the passers by.You are the salt of the earth; but if its taste goes from the salt, how will you make it salt again? it is then good for nothing but to be put out and crushed under foot by men.*Ye* are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have become insipid, wherewith shall it be salted? It is no longer fit for anything but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot by men.
Matthew 5:14*You* are the light of the world; a town cannot be hid if built on a hill-top.You are the light of the world. A town put on a hill may be seen by all.*Ye* are the light of the world: a city situated on the top of a mountain cannot be hid.
Matthew 5:15Nor is a lamp lighted to be put under a bushel, but on the lampstand; and then it gives light to all in the house.And a burning light is not put under a vessel, but on its table; so that its rays may be shining on all who are in the house.Nor do [men] light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shines for all who are in the house.
Matthew 5:16Just so let your light shine before all men, in order that they may see your holy lives and may give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.Even so let your light be shining before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your upright works, and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.
Matthew 5:17"Do not for a moment suppose that I have come to abrogate the Law or the Prophets: I have not come to abrogate them but to give them their completion.Let there be no thought that I have come to put an end to the law or the prophets. I have not come for destruction, but to make complete.Think not that I am come to make void the law or the prophets; I am not come to make void, but to fulfil.
Matthew 5:18Solemnly I tell you that until Heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or smallest detail will pass away from the Law until all has taken place.Truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth come to an end, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will in any way be taken from the law, till all things are done.For verily I say unto you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, one iota or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all come to pass.
Matthew 5:19Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments and teaches others to break them, will be called the least in the Kingdom of the Heavens; but whoever practises them and teaches them, he will be acknowledged as great in the Kingdom of the Heavens.Whoever then goes against the smallest of these laws, teaching men to do the same, will be named least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who keeps the laws, teaching others to keep them, will be named great in the kingdom of heaven.Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach [them], *he* shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.
Matthew 5:20For I assure you that unless your righteousness greatly surpasses that of the Scribes and the Pharisees, you will certainly not find entrance into the Kingdom of the Heavens.For I say to you, If your righteousness is not greater than the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never go into the kingdom of heaven.For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpass [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
Matthew 5:21"You have heard that it was said to the ancients, `Thou shalt not commit murder', and whoever commits murder will be answerable to the magistrate.You have knowledge that it was said in old times, You may not put to death; and, Whoever puts to death will be in danger of being judged:Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall be subject to the judgment.
Matthew 5:22But I say to you that every one who becomes angry with his brother shall be answerable to the magistrate; that whoever says to his brother `Raca,' shall be answerable to the Sanhedrin; and that whoever says, `You fool!' shall be liable to the Gehenna of Fire.But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be in danger of being judged; and he who says to his brother, Raca, will be in danger from the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, You foolish one, will be in danger of the hell of fire.But *I* say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to [be called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire.
Matthew 5:23If therefore when you are offering your gift upon the altar, you remember that your brother has a grievance against you,If then you are making an offering at the altar and there it comes to your mind that your brother has something against you,If therefore thou shouldest offer thy gift at the altar, and there shouldest remember that thy brother has something against thee,
Matthew 5:24leave your gift there before the altar, and go and make friends with your brother first, and then return and proceed to offer your gift.While your offering is still before the altar, first go and make peace with your brother, then come and make your offering.leave there thy gift before the altar, and first go, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Matthew 5:25Come to terms without delay with your opponent while you are yet with him on the way to the court; for fear he should obtain judgement from the magistrate against you, and the magistrate should give you in custody to the officer and you be thrown into prison.Come to an agreement quickly with him who has a cause against you at law, while you are with him on the way, for fear that he may give you up to the judge and the judge may give you to the police and you may be put into prison.Make friends with thine adverse party quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest some time the adverse party deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
Matthew 5:26I solemnly tell you that you will certainly not be released till you have paid the very last farthing.Truly I say to you, You will not come out from there till you have made payment of the very last farthing.Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing.
Matthew 5:27"You have heard that it was said, `Thou shalt not commit adultery.'You have knowledge that it was said, You may not have connection with another man's wife:Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Matthew 5:28But I tell you that whoever looks at a woman and cherishes lustful thoughts has already in his heart become guilty with regard to her.But I say to you that everyone whose eyes are turned on a woman with desire has had connection with her in his heart.But *I* say unto you, that every one who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Matthew 5:29If therefore your eye, even the right eye, is a snare to you, tear it out and away with it; it is better for you that one member should be destroyed rather than that your whole body should be thrown into Gehenna.And if your right eye is a cause of trouble to you, take it out and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.But if thy right eye be a snare to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.
Matthew 5:30And if your right hand is a snare to you, cut it off and away with it; it is better for you that one member should be destroyed rather than that your whole body should go into Gehenna.And if your right hand is a cause of trouble to you, let it be cut off and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.And if thy right hand be a snare to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.
Matthew 5:31"It was also said, `If any man puts away his wife, let him give her a written notice of divorce.'Again, it was said, Whoever puts away his wife has to give her a statement in writing for this purpose:It has been said too, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce.
Matthew 5:32But I tell you that every man who puts away his wife except on the ground of unfaithfulness causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries her when so divorced commits adultery.But I say to you that everyone who puts away his wife for any other cause but the loss of her virtue, makes her false to her husband; and whoever takes her as his wife after she is put away, is no true husband to her.But *I* say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for cause of fornication, makes her commit adultery, and whosoever marries one that is put away commits adultery.
Matthew 5:33"Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, `Thou shalt not swear falsely, but shalt perform thy vows to the Lord.'Again, you have knowledge that it was said in old times, Do not take false oaths, but give effect to your oaths to the Lord:Again, ye have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt render to the Lord what thou hast sworn.
Matthew 5:34But I tell you not to swear at all; neither by Heaven, for it is God's throne;But I say to you, Take no oaths at all: not by the heaven, because it is the seat of God;But *I* say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne of God;
Matthew 5:35nor by the earth, for it is the footstool under His feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the City of the Great King.Or by the earth, because it is the resting-place for his foot; or by Jerusalem, because it is the town of the great King.nor by the earth, because it is [the] footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is [the] city of the great King.
Matthew 5:36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.You may not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
Matthew 5:37But let your language be, `Yes, yes,' or `No, no.' Anything in excess of this comes from the Evil one.But let your words be simply, Yes or No: and whatever is more than these is of the Evil One.But let your word be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what is more than these is from evil.
Matthew 5:38"You have heard that it was said, `Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.'You have knowledge that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:Ye have heard that it has been said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.
Matthew 5:39But I tell you not to resist a wicked man, but if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.But I say to you, Do not make use of force against an evil man; but to him who gives you a blow on the right side of your face let the left be turned.But *I* say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other;
Matthew 5:40If any one wishes to go to law with you and to deprive you of your under garment, let him take your outer one also.And if any man goes to law with you and takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe from him.and to him that would go to law with thee and take thy body coat, leave him thy cloak also.
Matthew 5:41And whoever shall compel you to convey his goods one mile, go with him two.And whoever makes you go one mile, go with him two.And whoever will compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.
Matthew 5:42To him who asks, give: from him who would borrow, turn not away.Give to him who comes with a request, and keep not your property from him who would for a time make use of it.To him that asks of thee give, and from him that desires to borrow of thee turn not away.
Matthew 5:43"You have heard that it was said, `Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.'You have knowledge that it was said, Have love for your neighbour, and hate for him who is against you:Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.
Matthew 5:44But I command you all, love your enemies, and pray for your persecutors;But I say to you, Have love for those who are against you, and make prayer for those who are cruel to you;But *I* say unto you, Love your enemies, [bless those who curse you,] do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who [insult you and] persecute you,
Matthew 5:45that so you may become true sons of your Father in Heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the wicked as well as the good, and sends rain upon those who do right and those who do wrong.So that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven; for his sun gives light to the evil and to the good, and he sends rain on the upright man and on the sinner.that ye may be [the] sons of your Father who is in [the] heavens; for he makes his sun rise on evil and good, and sends rain on just and unjust.
Matthew 5:46For if you love only those who love you, what reward have you earned? Do not even the tax-gatherers do that?For if you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? do not the tax-farmers the same?For if ye should love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not also the tax-gatherers the same?
Matthew 5:47And if you salute only your near relatives, what praise is due to you? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?And if you say, Good day, to your brothers only, what do you do more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same?And if ye should salute your brethren only, what do ye extraordinary? Do not also the Gentiles the same?
Matthew 5:48You however are to be complete in goodness, as your Heavenly Father is complete.Be then complete in righteousness, even as your Father in heaven is complete.Be *ye* therefore perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.
