John 11:1Now a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.
John 11:2(It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.)(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
John 11:3So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill."So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
John 11:4Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it."When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
John 11:6When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place. So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.
John 11:7Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea."Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.
John 11:8"Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?"The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again? The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?
John 11:9"Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world. Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:
John 11:10But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.
John 11:11He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him."These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep. These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12"Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover."Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well. His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
John 11:13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep.Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep. But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.
John 11:14So then He told them plainly,Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead. Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15"Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him."And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.
John 11:16"Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him."Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.
John 11:17On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb. Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.
John 11:18Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles; Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)
John 11:19and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother. And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother. And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
John 11:20Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house. When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.
John 11:21So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died. Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:22And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you."But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
John 11:23"Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus.Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.
John 11:24"I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day."Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.
John 11:25"I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live;Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:
John 11:26and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?"And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith? And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?
John 11:27"Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.
John 11:28After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you."And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.
John 11:29So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him.And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him. She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.
John 11:30Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.
John 11:31So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there. Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there. The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.
John 11:32Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead. When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:33Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit,And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,
John 11:34though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply. And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord. And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.
John 11:35Jesus wept. And Jesus himself was weeping. And Jesus wept.
John 11:36"See how dear he held him," said the Jews.So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.
John 11:37But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?"But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death? But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?
John 11:38Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it.So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.
John 11:39"Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died."Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.
John 11:40"Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?"Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?
John 11:41So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me.So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.
John 11:42I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this that they may believe that Thou didst send me."I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
John 11:43After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.
John 11:44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free."And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.
John 11:45Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds became believers in Him;Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him. Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.
John 11:46though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done. But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done. But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.
John 11:47Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles. Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs. The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?
John 11:48If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation."If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation. If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.
John 11:49But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it.But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything; But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.
John 11:50You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish."You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
John 11:51It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation,He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation; And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God.And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world. And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.
John 11:53So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death. And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death. From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.
John 11:54Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples. So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.
John 11:55The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover. And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.
John 11:56They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? will he come to the Festival at all?"They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast? They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.
John 11:57Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.
