Luke 24:1And, on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices they had prepared. But on the first day of the week, at dawn, they came to the place where his body had been put, taking the spices which they had got ready. And on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared.
Luke 24:2But they found the stone rolled back from the tomb,And they saw that the stone had been rolled away. And they found the stone rolled back from the sepulchre.
Luke 24:3and on entering they found that the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. And they went in, but the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. And going in, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
Luke 24:4At this they were in great perplexity, when suddenly there stood by them two men whose raiment flashed like lightning. And while they were in doubt about it, they saw two men in shining clothing by them:And it came to pass, as they were astonished in their mind at this, behold, two men stood by them, in shining apparel.
Luke 24:5The women were terrified; but, as they stood with their faces bowed to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you search among the dead for Him who is living? And while their faces were bent down to the earth in fear, these said to them, Why are you looking for the living among the dead? And as they were afraid, and bowed down their countenance towards the ground, they said unto them: Why seek you the living with the dead?
Luke 24:6He is not here. He has come back to life. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee,He is not here, he has come back to life: have in mind what he said to you when he was still in Galilee, saying,He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spoke unto you, when he was in Galilee,
Luke 24:7when He told you that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."The Son of man will be given up into the hands of evil-doers, and be put to death on the cross, and on the third day he will come back to life.Saying: The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
Luke 24:8Then they remembered His words,And his words came back into their minds,And they remembered his words.
Luke 24:9and returning from the tomb they reported all this to the Eleven and to all the rest. And they went away from that place and gave an account of all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others. And going back from the sepulchre, they told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.
Luke 24:10The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; and they and the rest of the women related all this to the Apostles. Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James: and the other women with them said these things to the Apostles. And it was Mary Magdalen, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women that were with them, who told these things to the apostles.
Luke 24:11But the whole story seemed to them an idle tale; they could not believe the women. But these words seemed foolish to them, and they had no belief in them. And these words seemed to them as idle tales; and they did not believe them.
Luke 24:12Peter, however, rose and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw nothing but the linen cloths: so he went away to his own home, wondering at what had happened. But Peter got up and went to the place where the body had been put, and looking in he saw nothing but the linen cloths, and he went to his house full of wonder at what had taken place. But Peter rising up, ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths laid by themselves; and went away wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
Luke 24:13On that same day two of the disciples were walking to Emmaus, a village seven or eight miles from Jerusalem,And then, two of them, on that very day, were going to a little town named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And behold, two of them went, the same day, to a town which was sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, named Emmaus.
Luke 24:14and were conversing about all these recent events; And they were talking together about all those things which had taken place. And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
Luke 24:15and, in the midst of their conversation and discussion, Jesus Himself came and joined them,And while they were talking and questioning together, Jesus himself came near and went with them. And it came to pass, that while they talked and reasoned with themselves, Jesus himself also drawing near, went with them.
Luke 24:16though they were prevented from recognizing Him.But their eyes were not open that they might have knowledge of him.But their eyes were held, that they should not know him.
Luke 24:17"What is the subject," He asked them, "on which you are talking so earnestly, as you walk?" And they stood still, looking full of sorrow. And he said to them, What are you talking about together while you go?And he said to them: What are these discourses that you hold one with another as you walk, and are sad?
Luke 24:18Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered, "Are you a stranger lodging alone in Jerusalem, that you have known nothing of the things that have lately happened in the city?"Then stopping, and looking sadly at him, one of them, named Cleopas, said to him, Are you the only man living in Jerusalem who has not had news of the things which have taken place there at this time? And the one of them, whose name was Cleophas, answering, said to him: Art thou only a stranger to Jerusalem, and hast not known the things that have been done there in these days?
Luke 24:19"What things?" He asked. "The things about Jesus the Nazarene," they said, "who was a Prophet powerful in work and word before God and all the people;And he said to them, What things? And they said, The things to do with Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, great in his acts and his words, before God and all the people:To whom he said: What things? And they said: Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people;
Luke 24:20and how our High Priests and Rulers delivered Him up to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him.And how the chief priests and our rulers gave him up to be put to death on the cross. And how our chief priests and princes delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
Luke 24:21But we were hoping that it was He who was about to ransom Israel. Yes, and moreover it was the day before yesterday that these things happened. But we were hoping that he would be the Saviour of Israel. In addition to all this he has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place; But we hoped, that it was he that should have redeemed Israel: and now besides all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
Luke 24:22And, besides, some of the women of our company have amazed us. They went to the tomb at daybreak,And certain women among us gave us cause for wonder, for they went early to the place where his body had been put,Yea and certain women also of our company affrighted us, who before it was light, were at the sepulchre,
Luke 24:23and, finding that His body was not there, they came and declared to us that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. And it was not there; then they came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who said that he was living. And not finding his body, came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say that he is alive.
Luke 24:24Thereupon some of our party went to the tomb and found things just as the women had said; but Jesus Himself they did not see."And some of those who were with us went to the place, and saw that it was as the women had said, but him they did not see.And some of our people went to the sepulchre, and found it so as the women had said, but him they found not.
Luke 24:25"O dull-witted men," He replied, "with minds so slow to believe all that the Prophets have spoken! And he said, O foolish men! how slow you are to give belief to what the prophets have said. Then he said to them: O foolish, and slow of heart to believe in all things which the prophets have spoken.
Luke 24:26Was there not a necessity for the Christ thus to suffer, and then enter into His glory?"Was it not necessary for the Christ to go through these things, and to come into his glory?Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and so to enter into his glory?
Luke 24:27And, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them the passages in Scripture which refer to Himself. And he made clear to them all the things in the Writings, from Moses and from all the prophets, which had to do with himself. And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures, the things that were concerning him.
Luke 24:28When they had come near the village to which they were going, He appeared to be going further. And they came near the town to which they were going, and he seemed as if he was going on;And they drew night to the town, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go farther.
Luke 24:29But they pressed Him to remain with them. "Because," said they, "it is getting towards evening, and the day is nearly over." So He went in to stay with them. But they kept him back, saying, Do not go, for evening is near, the day is almost gone. And he went in with them. But they constrained him; saying: Stay with us, because it is towards evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in with them.
Luke 24:30But as soon as He had sat down with them, and had taken the bread and had blessed and broken it, and was handing it to them,And when he was seated with them at table, he took the bread, and said words of blessing and, making division of it, he gave it to them. And it came to pass, whilst he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and gave to them.
Luke 24:31their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. But He vanished from them. And then their eyes were open, and they had knowledge of him, but he went from their view. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him: and he vanished out of their sight.
Luke 24:32"Were not our hearts," they said to one another, "burning within us while He talked to us on the way and explained the Scriptures to us?"And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning in us while he was talking to us on the way, making clear to us the holy Writings? And they said one to the other: Was not our heart burning within us, whilst he spoke in this way, and opened to us the scriptures?
Luke 24:33So they rose and without an hour's delay returned to Jerusalem, and found the Eleven and the rest met together, who said to them,And that very hour they got up and went back to Jerusalem, where the eleven and the others had come together. And rising up, the same hour, they went back to Jerusalem: and they found the eleven gathered together, and those that were staying with them,
Luke 24:34"Yes, it is true: the Master has come back to life. He has been seen by Simon."And they said to them, The Lord has truly come back to life again, and Simon has seen him.Saying: The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
Luke 24:35Then they related what had happened on the way, and how He had been recognized by them in the breaking of the bread. And they gave an account of the things which had taken place on the way, and how, when he gave them bread, they had knowledge of him.And they told what things were done in the way; and how they knew him in the breaking of the bread.
Luke 24:36While they were thus talking, He Himself stood in their midst and said, "Peace be to you!"And while they were saying these things, he himself was among them, and said to them, Peace be with you!Now whilst they were speaking these things, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and saith to them: Peace be to you; it is I, fear not.
Luke 24:37Startled, and in the utmost alarm, they thought they were looking at a spirit; But they were full of fear, being of the opinion that they were seeing a spirit. But they being troubled and frightened, supposed that they saw a spirit.
Luke 24:38but He said to them, "Why such alarm? And why are there such questionings in your minds? And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why are your hearts full of doubt? And he said to them: Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Luke 24:39See my hands and my feet it is my very self. Feel me and see, for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see I have."See; my hands and my feet: it is I myself; put your hands on me and make certain; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle, and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as you see me to have.
Luke 24:40And then He showed them His hands and His feet. And when he had said this, he let them see his hands and his feet. And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and feet.
Luke 24:41But, while they still could not believe it for joy and were full of astonishment, He asked them, "Have you any food here?"And because, for joy and wonder, they were still in doubt, he said to them, Have you any food here? But while they yet believed not, and wondered for joy, he said: Have you any thing to eat?
Luke 24:42And they gave Him a piece of roasted fish,And they gave him a bit of cooked fish. And they offered him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb.
Luke 24:43and He took it and ate it in their presence. And before their eyes he took a meal. And when he had eaten before them, taking the remains, he gave to them.
Luke 24:44And He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you that everything must be fulfilled that is written in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and the Psalms concerning me."And he said to them, These are the words which I said to you when I was still with you, how it was necessary for all the things which are in the writings of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms about me, to be put into effect. And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Luke 24:45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,Then he made the holy Writings clear to their minds. Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.
Luke 24:46and He said, "Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise again from among the dead; And he said to them, So it is in the Writings that the Christ would undergo death, and come back to life again on the third day;And he said to them: Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead, the third day:
Luke 24:47and that proclamation would be made, in His name, of repentance and forgiveness of sins to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem. And that teaching about a change of heart and forgiveness of sins is to be given to Jerusalem first and to all nations in his name. And that penance and remission of sins should be preached in his name, unto all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Luke 24:48You are witnesses as to these things. You are witnesses of these things. And you are witnesses of these things.
Luke 24:49And remember that I am about to send out my Father's promised gift to rest upon you. But, as for you, wait patiently in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."And now I will send to you what my father has undertaken to give you, but do not go from the town, till the power from heaven comes to you.And I send the promise of my Father upon you: but stay you in the city till you be endued with power from on high.
Luke 24:50And He brought them out to within view of Bethany, and then lifted up His hands and blessed them. And he took them out till they were near Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he gave them a blessing. And he led them out as far as Bethania: and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
Luke 24:51And while He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into Heaven. And while he was doing so, he went from them and was taken up into heaven. And it came to pass, whilst he blessed them, he departed from them, and was carried up to heaven.
