Matthew 13:1 | That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake, | On that day Jesus went out of the house and was seated by the seaside. | The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. |
Matthew 13:2 | when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore. | And great numbers of people came together to him, so that he got into a boat; and the people took up their position by the sea. | And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. |
Matthew 13:3 | He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow. | And he gave them teaching in the form of a story, saying, A man went out to put seed in the earth; | And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; |
Matthew 13:4 | As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up. | And while he did so, some seeds were dropped by the wayside, and the birds came and took them for food: | And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: |
Matthew 13:5 | Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth; | And some of the seed went among the stones, where it had not much earth, and straight away it came up because the earth was not deep: | Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: |
Matthew 13:6 | but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up. | And when the sun was high, it was burned; and because it had no root it became dry and dead. | And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. |
Matthew 13:7 | Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it. | And some seeds went among thorns, and the thorns came up and they had no room for growth: | And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: |
Matthew 13:8 | But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty. | And some, falling on good earth, gave fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. |
Matthew 13:9 | Listen, every one who has ears!" | He who has ears, let him give ear. | Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
Matthew 13:10 | (And His disciples came and asked Him, "Why do you speak to them in figurative language?" | And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you say things to them in the form of stories? | And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? |
Matthew 13:11 | "Because," He replied, "while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not. | And he said to them in answer, To you is given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. | He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. |
Matthew 13:12 | For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away. | Because whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have more; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. | For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. |
Matthew 13:13 | I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand. | For this reason I put things into the form of stories; because they see without seeing, and give ear without hearing, and the sense is not clear to them. | Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. |
Matthew 13:14 | And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: "`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see. | And for them the words of Isaiah have come true, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you: | And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: |
Matthew 13:15 | For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.' | For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well. | For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. |
Matthew 13:16 | "But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. | But a blessing be on your eyes, because they see; and on your ears, because they are open. | But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. |
Matthew 13:17 | For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them. | For truly, I say to you that prophets and upright men had a desire to see the things which you see, and saw them not; and to have knowledge of the words which have come to your ears, and they had it not. | For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. |
Matthew 13:18 | "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower. | Give ear, then, to the story of the man who put the seed in the earth. | Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. |
Matthew 13:19 | When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side. | When the word of the kingdom comes to anyone, and the sense of it is not clear to him, then the Evil One comes, and quickly takes away that which was put in his heart. He is the seed dropped by the wayside. | When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. |
Matthew 13:20 | He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy. | And that which went on the stones, this is he who, hearing the word, straight away takes it with joy; | But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; |
Matthew 13:21 | It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls. | But having no root in himself, he goes on for a time; and when trouble comes or pain, because of the word, he quickly becomes full of doubts. | Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. |
Matthew 13:22 | He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful. | And that which was dropped among the thorns, this is he who has the word; and the cares of this life, and the deceits of wealth, put a stop to the growth of the word and it gives no fruit. | He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. |
Matthew 13:23 | But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.") | And the seed which was put in good earth, this is he who gives ear to the word, and gets the sense of it; who gives fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. |
Matthew 13:24 | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field, | And he gave them another story, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man who put good seed in his field: | Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: |
Matthew 13:25 | but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away. | But while men were sleeping, one who had hate for him came and put evil seeds among the grain, and went away. | But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. |
Matthew 13:26 | But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also. | But when the green stem came up and gave fruit, the evil plants were seen at the same time. | But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. |
Matthew 13:27 | "So the farmer's men come and ask him, "`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?' | And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Sir, did you not put good seed in your field? how then has it evil plants? | So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? |
Matthew 13:28 | "`Some enemy has done this,' he said. "`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire. | And he said, Someone has done this in hate. And the servants say to him, Is it your pleasure that we go and take them up? | He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? |
Matthew 13:29 | "`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it. | But he says, No, for fear that by chance while you take up the evil plants, you may be rooting up the grain with them. | But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. |
Matthew 13:30 | Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'" | Let them come up together till the getting in of the grain; and then I will say to the workers, Take up first the evil plants, and put them together for burning: but put the grain into my store-house. | Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. |
Matthew 13:31 | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground. | He put another story before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his field: | Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: |
Matthew 13:32 | It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches." | Which is smaller than all seeds; but when it has come up it is greater than the plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and make their resting-places in its branches. | Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. |
Matthew 13:33 | Another parable He spoke to them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen." | Another story he gave to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and put in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened. | Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. |
Matthew 13:34 | All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them, | All these things Jesus said to the people in the form of stories; and without a story he said nothing to them: | All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: |
Matthew 13:35 | in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, "I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things." | That it might come true which was said by the prophet, Opening my mouth, I will give out stories; I will give knowledge of things kept secret from before all time. | That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. |
Matthew 13:36 | When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field." | Then he went away from the people, and went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Make clear to us the story of the evil plants in the field. | Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. |
Matthew 13:37 | "The sower of the good seed," He replied, "is the Son of Man; | And he made answer and said, He who puts the good seed in the earth is the Son of man; | He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; |
Matthew 13:38 | the field is the world; the good seed these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one. | And the field is the world; and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom; and the evil seeds are the sons of the Evil One; | The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; |
Matthew 13:39 | The enemy who sows the darnel is *the Devil*; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels. | And he who put them in the earth is Satan; and the getting in of the grain is the end of the world; and those who get it in are the angels. | The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. |
Matthew 13:40 | As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age. | As then the evil plants are got together and burned with fire, so will it be in the end of the world. | As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. |
Matthew 13:41 | The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws; | The Son of man will send out his angels, and they will take out of his kingdom everything which is a cause of error, and all those who do wrong, | The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; |
Matthew 13:42 | and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth. | And will put them into the fire; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:43 | Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears! | Then will the upright be shining as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him give ear. | Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
Matthew 13:44 | "The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground. | The kingdom of heaven is like a secret store of wealth in a field, which a man came across and put back again; and in his joy he goes and gives all he has, to get that field. | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. |
Matthew 13:45 | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls. | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader searching for beautiful jewels. | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: |
Matthew 13:46 | He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it. | And having come across one jewel of great price, he went and gave all he had in exchange for it. | Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. |
Matthew 13:47 | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts. | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, which was put into the sea and took in every sort of fish: | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: |
Matthew 13:48 | When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away. | When it was full, they took it up on the sands; and seated there they put the good into vessels, but the bad they put away. | Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. |
Matthew 13:49 | So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous, | So will it be in the end of the world: the angels will come and take out the bad from the good, | So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, |
Matthew 13:50 | and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth." | And will put them into the fire: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:51 | "Have you understood all this?" He asked. "Yes," they said. | Are all these things now clear to you? They say to him, Yes. | Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. |
Matthew 13:52 | "Therefore," He said, "remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old." | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house, who gives out from his store things new and old. | Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. |
Matthew 13:53 | Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed. | And when Jesus had come to the end of these stories he went away from there. | And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. |
Matthew 13:54 | And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, "Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers? | And coming into his country, he gave them teaching in their Synagogue, so that they were greatly surprised and said, Where did this man get this wisdom and these works of power? | And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? |
Matthew 13:55 | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah? | Is not this the woodworker's son? is not his mother named Mary? and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? | Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? |
Matthew 13:56 | And his sisters are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?" | And his sisters, are they not all with us? from where, then, has he all these things? | And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? |
Matthew 13:57 | So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, "There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family." | And they were bitter against him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour but in his country and among his family. | And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. |
Matthew 13:58 | And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith. | And the works of power which he did there were small in number because they had no faith. | And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. |
