Matthew 15:1Then there came to Jesus a party of Pharisees and Scribes from Jerusalem, who inquired,Then there came to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
Matthew 15:2"Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the Elders by not washing their hands before meals?"Why do your disciples go against the teaching of the fathers? for they take food with unwashed hands. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
Matthew 15:3"Why do you, too," He retorted, "transgress God's commands for the sake of your tradition? And in answer he said to them, Why do you, yourselves, go against the word of God on account of the teaching which has been handed down to you?But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
Matthew 15:4For God said, `Honour thy father and thy mother'; and `Let him who reviles father or mother be certainly put to death';For God said, Give honour to your father and mother: and, He who says evil of father or mother will be put to death. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
Matthew 15:5but you this is what you say: `If a man says to his father or mother, That is consecrated, whatever it is, which otherwise you should have received from meBut you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, That by which you might have had profit from me is given to God;But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
Matthew 15:6he shall be absolved from honouring his father'; and so you have abrogated God's Word for the sake of your tradition. There is no need for him to give honour to his father. And you have made the word of God without effect because of your teaching. And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
Matthew 15:7Hypocrites! well did Isaiah prophesy of you,You false ones, well did Isaiah say of you,Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
Matthew 15:8"`This is a People who honour Me with their lips, while their heart is far away from Me;These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me.This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Matthew 15:9but it is in vain they worship Me, while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.'"But their worship is to no purpose, while they give as their teaching the rules of men.But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Matthew 15:10Then, when He had called the people to Him, Jesus said, "Hear and understand. And he got the people together and said to them, Give ear, and let my words be clear to you:And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
Matthew 15:11It is not what goes into a man's mouth that defiles him; but it is what comes out of his mouth *that* defiles a man."Not that which goes into the mouth makes a man unclean, but that which comes out of the mouth. Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Matthew 15:12Then His disciples came and said to Him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were greatly shocked when they heard those words?"Then the disciples came and said to him, Did you see that the Pharisees were troubled when these words came to their ears? Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
Matthew 15:13"Every plant," He replied, "which my Heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.But he said in answer, Every plant which my Father in heaven has not put in the earth, will be taken up by the roots. But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
Matthew 15:14Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind; and if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into some pit."Let them be: they are blind guides. And if a blind man is guiding a blind man, the two will go falling into a hole together.Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
Matthew 15:15"Explain to us this figurative language," said Peter. Then Peter said to him, Make the story clear to us.Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
Matthew 15:16"Are even you," He answered, "still without intellingence? And he said, Are you, like them, still without wisdom? And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
Matthew 15:17Do you not understand that whatever enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is afterwards ejected from the body?Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth goes on into the stomach, and is sent out as waste?Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?
Matthew 15:18But the things that come out of the mouth proceed from the heart, and it is these that defile the man.But the things which come out of the mouth come from the heart; and they make a man unclean. But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
Matthew 15:19For out of the heart proceed wicked thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, impiety of speech. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, the taking of life, broken faith between the married, unclean desires of the flesh, taking of property, false witness, bitter words:For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Matthew 15:20These are the things which defile the man; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile."These are the things which make a man unclean; but to take food with unwashed hands does not make a man unclean. These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
Matthew 15:21Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew into the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. And Jesus went away from there into the country of Tyre and Sidon. Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
Matthew 15:22Here a Canaanitish woman of the district came out and persistently cried out, "Sir, Son of David, pity me; my daughter is cruelly harassed by a demon."And a woman of Canaan came out from those parts, crying and saying, Have pity on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is greatly troubled with an unclean spirit. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
Matthew 15:23But He answered her not a word. Then the disciples interposed, and begged Him, saying, "Send her away because she keeps crying behind us."But he gave her no answer. And his disciples came and said to him, Send her away, for she is crying after us.But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
Matthew 15:24"I have only been sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel," He replied. But he made answer and said, I was sent only to the wandering sheep of the house of Israel. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 15:25Then she came and threw herself at His feet and entreated Him. "O Sir, help me," she said. But she came and gave him worship, saying, Help, Lord. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
Matthew 15:26"It is not right," He said, "to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."And he made answer and said, It is not right to take the children's bread and give it to the dogs. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.
Matthew 15:27"Be it so, Sir," she said, "for even the dogs eat the scraps which fall from their masters' tables."But she said, Yes, Lord: but even the dogs take the bits from under their masters' table. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.
Matthew 15:28"O woman," replied Jesus, "great is your faith: be it done to you as you desire." And from that moment her daughter was restored to health. Then Jesus, answering, said to her, O woman, great is your faith: let your desire be done. And her daughter was made well from that hour. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Matthew 15:29Again, moving thence, Jesus went along by the Lake of Galilee; and ascending the hill, He sat down there. And Jesus went from there and came to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and took his seat there. And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
Matthew 15:30Soon great crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were crippled in feet or hands, blind or dumb, and many besides, and they hastened to lay them at His feet. And He cured them,And there came to him great numbers of people having with them those who were broken in body, or blind, or without voice, or wounded, or ill in any way, and a number of others; they put them down at his feet and he made them well:And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:
Matthew 15:31so that the people were amazed to see the dumb speaking, the maimed with their hands perfect, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they gave the glory to the God of Israel. So that the people were full of wonder when they saw that those who had no voice were talking, the feeble were made strong, those whose bodies were broken had the power of walking, and the blind were able to see: and they gave glory to the God of Israel.Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
Matthew 15:32But Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, "My heart yearns over this mass of people, for it is now the third day that they have been with me and they have nothing to eat. I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they should faint on the road."And Jesus got his disciples together and said, I have pity for the people, because they have now been with me three days and have no food: and I will not send them away without food, or they will have no strength for the journey. Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
Matthew 15:33"Where can we," asked the disciples, "get bread enough in this remote place to satisfy so vast a multitude?"And the disciples say to him, How may we get enough bread in a waste place, to give food to such a number of people? And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
Matthew 15:34"How many loaves have you?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish."And Jesus says to them, How much bread have you? And they said, Seven cakes, and some small fishes. And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
Matthew 15:35So He bade all the people sit down on the ground,Then he gave an order to the people to be seated on the earth,And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
Matthew 15:36and He took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks He broke them up and then distributed them to the disciples, and they to the people. And he took the seven cakes of bread and the fishes; and having given praise, he gave the broken bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people. And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
Matthew 15:37And they all ate and were satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they took up seven full hampers. And they all took food, and had enough; and they took up of the broken bits, seven baskets full. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
Matthew 15:38Those who ate were 4,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children. And there were four thousand men who took food, together with women and children. And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
Matthew 15:39He then dismissed the people, went on board the boat, and came into the district of Magadan. And when he had sent the people away, he got into the boat, and came into the country of Magadan. And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.
