John 6:1After this Jesus went away across the Lake of Galilee (that is, the Lake of Tiberias). After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee that is, the sea of Tiberias. After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.
John 6:2A vast multitude followed Him, because they witnessed the miracles on the sick which He was constantly performing. And a great number of people went after him because they saw the signs which he did on those who were ill.And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he performed on them that were diseased.
John 6:3Then Jesus went up the hill, and sat there with His disciples. Then Jesus went up the mountain and was seated there with his disciples. And Jesus went upon a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.
John 6:4The Jewish Festival, the Passover, was at hand. Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
John 6:5And when He looked round and saw an immense crowd coming towards Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for all these people to eat?"Lifting up his eyes, Jesus saw a great number of people coming to where he was, and he said to Philip, Where may we get bread for all these people? When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come to him, he saith to Philip, Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?
John 6:6He said this to put Philip to the test, for He Himself knew what He was going to do.This he said, testing him: for he had no doubt what he himself would do.(And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.)
John 6:7"Seven pounds' worth of bread," replied Philip, "is not enough for them all to get even a scanty meal."Philip made answer, Bread to the value of two hundred pence would not be enough even to give everyone a little.Philip answered him, Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them make take a little:
John 6:8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him,One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to Jesus,One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith to him,
John 6:9"There is a boy here with five barley loaves and a couple of fish: but what is that among so many?"There is a boy here with five barley cakes and two fishes: but what is that among such a number? There is a lad here, who hath five barley-loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
John 6:10"Make the people sit down," said Jesus. The ground was covered with thick grass; so they sat down, the adult men numbering about 5,000.Jesus said, Let the people be seated. Now there was much grass in that place. And those seated on the grass were about five thousand. And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. (Now there was much grass in the place.) So the men sat down in number about five thousand.
John 6:11Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were resting on the ground; and also the fish in like manner as much as they desired. Then Jesus took the cakes and having given praise to God, he gave them to the people who were seated, and the fishes in the same way, as much as they had need of.And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes, as much as they would.
John 6:12When all were fully satisfied, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the broken portions that remain over, so that nothing be lost."And when they had had enough, Jesus said to his disciples, Take up the broken bits which are over, so that nothing may be wasted. When they were satisfied, he said to his disciples, Gather the fragments that remain, that nothing may be lost.
John 6:13Accordingly they gathered them up; and with the fragments of the five barley loaves the broken portions that remained over after they had done eating they filled twelve baskets. So they took them up: twelve baskets full of broken bits of the five cakes which were over after the people had had enough. Therefore they gathered them, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten.
John 6:14Thereupon the people, having seen the miracle He had performed, said, "This is indeed the Prophet who was to come into the world."And when the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, Truly, this is the prophet who is to come into the world. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus performed, said, This is truly that prophet that should come into the world.
John 6:15Perceiving, however, that they were about to come and carry Him off by force to make Him a king, Jesus withdrew again up the hill alone by Himself. Now when Jesus saw that the people were about to come and take him by force to make him a king, he went away again up the mountain by himself. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again to a mountain himself alone.
John 6:16When evening came on, His disciples went down to the Lake. When evening came the disciples went down to the sea;And when evening had now come, his disciples went down to the sea,
John 6:17There they got on board a boat, and pushed off to cross the Lake to Capernaum. By this time it had become dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. And they took a boat and went across the sea in the direction of Capernaum. By then it was dark and still Jesus had not come to them. And entered into a boat, and went over the sea towards Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
John 6:18The Lake also was getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. The sea was getting rough because of a strong wind which was blowing. And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
John 6:19When, however, they had rowed three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the water and coming near the boat. After they had gone three or four miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near to the boat; and they had great fear.So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh to the boat: and they were afraid.
John 6:20They were terrified; but He called to them. "It is I," He said, "do not be afraid."But he said to them, It is I, have no fear. But he saith to them, It is I; be not afraid.
John 6:21Then they were willing to take Him on board; and in a moment the boat reached the shore at the point to which they were going. Then they readily took him into the boat: and straight away the boat was at the land to which they were going. Then they willingly received him into the boat: and immediately the boat was at the land whither they were going.
John 6:22Next morning the crowd who were still standing about on the other side of the Lake found that there had been but one small boat there, and they had seen that Jesus did not go on board with His disciples, but that His disciples went away without Him.The day after, the people who were on the other side of the sea saw that only one small boat had been there, that Jesus had not gone in that boat with the disciples, but that the disciples had gone away by themselves.The day following, when the people who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save that one into which his disciples had entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples had gone away alone;
John 6:23Yet a number of small boats came from Tiberias to the neighbourhood of the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. Some other boats, however, came from Tiberias near to the place where they had taken the bread after the Lord had given praise.(Yet there came other boats from Tiberias nigh to the place where they ate bread, after the Lord had given thanks:)
John 6:24When however the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they themselves also took boats and came to Capernaum to look for Jesus. So when the people saw that Jesus was not there, or his disciples, they got into those boats and went over to Capernaum looking for Jesus. When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
John 6:25So when they had crossed the Lake and had found Him, they asked Him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"And when they came across him on the other side of the sea they said, Rabbi, when did you come here? And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
John 6:26"In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that you are searching for me not because you have seen miracles, but because you ate the loaves and had a hearty meal.Jesus, answering them, said, Truly I say to you, You come after me, not because you saw signs, but because you were given the bread and had enough.Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were satisfied.
John 6:27Bestow your pains not on the food which perishes, but on the food that remains unto the Life of the Ages that food which will be the Son of Man's gift to you; for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal."Let your work not be for the food which comes to an end, but for the food which goes on for eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you, for on him has God the Father put his mark.Labor not for the food which perisheth, but for that food which endureth to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give to you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
John 6:28"What are we to do," they asked, "in order to carry out the things that God requires?"Then they said to him, How may we do the works of God?Then said they to him, What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?
John 6:29"This," replied Jesus, "is above all the thing that God requires that you should be believers in Him whom He has sent."Jesus, answering, said to them, This is to do the work of God: to have faith in him whom God has sent.Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
John 6:30"What miracle then," they asked, "do you perform for us to see and become believers in you? What do you *do*?So they said, What sign do you give us, so that we may see and have faith in you? What do you do?They said therefore to him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
John 6:31Our forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, as it is written, `He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat'."Our fathers had the manna in the waste land, as the Writings say, He gave them bread from heaven. Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
John 6:32"In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that Moses did not give you the bread out of Heaven, but my Father is giving you the bread the true bread out of Heaven.Jesus then said to them, Truly I say to you, What Moses gave you was not the bread from heaven; it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
John 6:33For God's bread is that which comes down out of Heaven and gives Life to the world."The bread of God is the bread which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world. For the bread of God is he who cometh down from heaven, and giveth life to the world.
John 6:34"Sir," they said, "always give us that bread."Ah, Lord, they said, give us that bread for ever! Then said they to him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
John 6:35"I am the bread of Life," replied Jesus; "he who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never, never thirst. And this was the answer of Jesus: I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be in need of food, and he who has faith in me will never be in need of drink. And Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me, shall never thirst.
John 6:36But it is as I have said to you: you have seen me and yet you do not believe. But it is as I said to you: you have seen me, and still you have no faith. But I said to you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
John 6:37Every one whom the Father gives me will come to me, and him who comes to me I will never on any account drive away.Whatever the Father gives to me will come to me; and I will not send away anyone who comes to me.All that the Father giveth me, shall come to me; and him that cometh to me, I will in no wise reject.
John 6:38For I have left Heaven and have come down to earth not to seek my own pleasure, but to do the will of Him who sent me.For I have come down from heaven, not to do my pleasure, but the pleasure of him who sent me.For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.
John 6:39And this is the will of Him who sent me, that of all that He has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it to life on the last day.And this is the pleasure of him who sent me, that I am not to let out of my hands anything which he has given me, but I am to give it new life on the last day.And this is the Father's will who hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
John 6:40For this is my Father's will, that every one who fixes his gaze on the Son of God and believes in Him should have the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him to life on the last day."This, I say, is my Father's pleasure, that everyone who sees the Son and has faith in him may have eternal life: and I will take him up on the last day.And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one who seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:41Now the Jews began to find fault about Him because of His claiming to be the bread which came down out of Heaven. Now the Jews said bitter things about Jesus because of his words, I am the bread which came down from heaven. The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
John 6:42They kept asking, "Is not this man Joseph's son? Is he not Jesus, whose father and mother we know? What does he mean by now saying, `I have come down out of Heaven'?"And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have seen? How is it then that he now says, I have come down from heaven? And they said, Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
John 6:43"Do not thus find fault among yourselves," replied Jesus;Jesus made answer and said, Do not say things against me, one to another.Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves.
John 6:44"no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; then I will raise him to life on the last day.No man is able to come to me if the Father who sent me does not give him the desire to come: and I will take him up from the dead on the last day.No man can come to me, except the Father who hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:45It stands written in the Prophets, `And they shall all of them be taught by God'. Every one who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to me.The writings of the prophets say, And they will all have teaching from God. Everyone whose ears have been open to the teaching of the Father comes to me.It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught from God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned from the Father, cometh to me.
John 6:46No one has ever seen the Father except Him who is from God. He has seen the Father. Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only he who is from God, he has seen the Father. Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he who is from God, he hath seen the Father.
John 6:47"In most solemn truth I tell you that he who believes has the Life of the Ages.Truly I say to you, He who has faith in me has eternal life.Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
John 6:48I am the bread of Life.I am the bread of life.I am that bread of life.
John 6:49Your forefathers ate the manna in the Desert, and they died.Your fathers took the manna in the waste land and they are dead.Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
John 6:50Here is the bread that comes down out of Heaven that a man may eat it and not die.The bread which comes from heaven is such bread that a man may take it for food and never see death. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat of it, and not die.
John 6:51I am the living bread come down out of Heaven. If a man eats this bread, he shall live for ever. Moreover the bread which I will give is my flesh given for the life of the world."I am the living bread which has come from heaven: if any man takes this bread for food he will have life for ever: and more than this, the bread which I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world.I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man shall eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
John 6:52This led to an angry debate among the Jews. "How can this man," they argued, "give us his flesh to eat?"Then the Jews had an angry discussion among themselves, saying, How is it possible for this man to give us his flesh for food? The Jews therefore contended among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
John 6:53"In most solemn truth I tell you," said Jesus, "that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no Life in you. Then Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, If you do not take the flesh of the Son of man for food, and if you do not take his blood for drink, you have no life in you. Then Jesus said to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
John 6:54He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has the Life of the Ages, and I will raise him up on the last day.He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink has eternal life: and I will take him up from the dead at the last day.Whoever eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
John 6:56He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in union with me, and I remain in union with him.He who takes my flesh for food and my blood for drink is in me and I in him.He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
John 6:57As the ever-living Father has sent me, and I live because of the Father, so also he who eats me will live because of me.As the living Father has sent me, and I have life because of the Father, even so he who takes me for his food will have life because of me.As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
John 6:58This is the bread which came down out of Heaven; it is unlike that which your forefathers ate for they ate and yet died. He who eats this bread shall live for ever."This is the bread which has come down from heaven. It is not like the food which your fathers had: they took of the manna, and are dead; but he who takes this bread for food will have life for ever. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers ate manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
John 6:59Jesus said all this in the synagogue while teaching at Capernaum.Jesus said these things in the Synagogue while he was teaching at Capernaum. These things he said in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
John 6:60Many therefore of His disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is hard to accept. Who can listen to such teaching?"Then, hearing this, a number of his disciples said, This is a hard saying; who is able to take in such teaching? Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?
John 6:61But, knowing in Himself that His disciples were dissatisfied about it, Jesus asked them,When Jesus became conscious that his disciples were protesting about what he said, he said to them, Does this give you trouble? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said to them, Doth this offend you?
John 6:62"Does this seem incredible to you? What then if you were to see the Son of Man ascending again where He was before? What then will you say if you see the Son of man going up to where he was before? What if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
John 6:63It is the spirit which gives Life. The flesh confers no benefit whatever. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and are Life. The spirit is the life giver; the flesh is of no value: the words which I have said to you are spirit and they are life.It is the spirit that reviveth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak to you, they are spirit, and they are life.
John 6:64But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him.But still some of you have no faith. For it was clear to Jesus from the first who they were who had no faith, and who it was who would be false to him.But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who he was that would betray him.
John 6:65So He added, "That is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it be granted him by the Father."And he said, This is why I said to you, No man is able to come to me if he is not given the power to do so by the Father. And he said, Therefore I said to you, that no man can come to me, except it were given to him by my Father.
John 6:66Thereupon many of His disciples left Him and went away, and no longer associated with Him.Because of what he said, a number of the disciples went back and would no longer go with him. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
John 6:67Jesus therefore appealed to the Twelve. "Will you go also?" He asked. So Jesus said to the twelve, Have you a desire to go away? Then said Jesus to the twelve, Will ye also go away?
John 6:68"Master," replied Simon Peter, "to whom shall we go? Your teachings tell us of the Life of the Ages. Then Simon Peter gave this answer: Lord, to whom are we to go? you have the words of eternal life; Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
John 6:69And we have come to believe and know that *you* are indeed the Holy One of God."And we have faith and are certain that you are the Holy One of God.And we believe, and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
John 6:70"Did not I choose you the Twelve?" said Jesus, "and even of you one is a devil."Then Jesus said, Did I not make a selection of you, the twelve, and one of you is a son of the Evil One?Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
John 6:71He alluded to Judas, the son of Simon the Iscariot. For he it was who, though one of the Twelve, was afterwards to betray Him.He was talking of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. It was he who was to be false to Jesus one of the twelve. He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for it was he that was to betray him, being one of the twelve.
