Mark 12:1 | Then He began to speak to them in figurative language. "There was once a man," He said, "who planted a vineyard, fenced it round, dug a pit for the wine-tank, and built a strong lodge. Then he let the place to vine-dressers and went abroad. | And he gave them teaching in the form of stories. A man had a vine-garden planted, and put a wall about it, and made a place for crushing out the wine, and put up a tower, and let it out to field-workers, and went into another country. | And he began to speak to them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and digged a place for the wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. |
Mark 12:2 | At vintage-time he sent one of his servants to receive from the vine-dressers a share of the grapes. | And when the time came, he sent a servant to get from the workmen some of the fruit of the garden. | And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. |
Mark 12:3 | But they seized him, beat him cruelly and sent him away empty-handed. | And they took him, and gave him blows, and sent him away with nothing. | And they caught him, and beat him and sent him away empty. |
Mark 12:4 | Again he sent to them another servant: and as for him, they wounded him in the head and treated him shamefully. | And again he sent to them another servant; and they gave him wounds on the head, and were very cruel to him. | And again, he sent to them another servant: and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled. |
Mark 12:5 | Yet a third he sent, and him they killed. And he sent many besides, and them also they ill-treated, beating some and killing others. | And he sent another; and they put him to death: and a number of others, whipping some, and putting some to death. | And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some. |
Mark 12:6 | He had still one left whom he could send, a dearly-loved son: him last of all he sent, saying, "`They will treat my son with respect.' | He still had one, a dearly loved son: he sent him last to them, saying, They will have respect for my son. | Having yet therefore one son, his well-beloved, he sent him also last to them, saying, They will reverence my son. |
Mark 12:7 | "But those men the vine-dressers said to one another, "`Here is the heir: come, let us kill him, and then the property will one day be ours.' | But those workmen said among themselves, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property; come, let us put him to death, and the heritage will be ours. | But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. |
Mark 12:8 | "So they took him and killed him, and flung his body outside the vineyard. | And they took him and put him to death, pushing his body out of the garden. | And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. |
Mark 12:9 | What, therefore, will the owner of the vineyard do?" "He will come and put the vine-dressers to death," they said; "and will give the vineyard to others." | What then will the master of the garden do? He will come and put the workmen to death, and will give the garden into the hands of others. | What therefore will the Lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. |
Mark 12:10 | "Have you not read even this passage," He added, "`The stone which the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone: | Have you not seen this which is in the Writings: The stone which the builders put on one side, the same was made the chief stone of the building: | And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: |
Mark 12:11 | this Cornerstone came from the Lord, and is wonderful in our esteem?'" | This was the Lord's doing, and it is a wonder in our eyes? | This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? |
Mark 12:12 | And they kept looking out for an opportunity to seize Him, but were afraid of the people; for they saw that in this parable He had referred to *them*. So they left Him and went away. | And they made attempts to take him; but they were in fear of the people, because they saw that the story was against them; and they went away from him. | And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and departed. |
Mark 12:13 | Their next step was to send to Him some of the Pharisees and of Herod's partisans to entrap Him in conversation. | Then they sent to him certain of the Pharisees and the Herodians, so that they might make use of his words to take him by a trick. | And they sent to him certain of the Pharisees, and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. |
Mark 12:14 | So they came to Him. "Rabbi," they said, "we know that you are a truthful man and you do not fear any one; for you do not recognize human distinctions, but teach God's way truly. Is it allowable to pay poll-tax to Caesar, or not? | And when they had come, they said to him, Master, we are certain that you are true, and have no fear of anyone: you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God: Is it right to give taxes to Caesar or not? | And when they had come, they say to him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not? |
Mark 12:15 | Shall we pay, or shall we refuse to pay?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, replied, "Why try to ensnare me? Bring me a shilling for me to look at." | Are we to give or not to give? But he, conscious of their false hearts, said to them, Why do you put me to the test? give me a penny, so that I may see it. | Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it. |
Mark 12:16 | They brought one; and He asked them, "Whose is this likeness and this inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied. | And they gave him one. And he said to them, Whose is this image and name on it? And they said to him, Caesar's. | And they brought it: and he saith to them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said to him, Cesar's. |
Mark 12:17 | "What is Caesar's," replied Jesus, "pay to Caesar and what is God's, pay to God." And they wondered exceedingly at Him. | And Jesus said to them, Give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's. And they were full of wonder at him. | And Jesus answering, said to them, Render to Cesar the things that are Cesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they wondered at him. |
Mark 12:18 | Then came to Him a party of Sadducees, a sect which denies that there is any Resurrection; and they proceeded to question Him. | And there came to him Sadducees, who say there is no coming back from the dead; and they put a question to him, saying, | Then come to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, |
Mark 12:19 | "Rabbi," they said, "Moses made it a law for us: `If a man's brother should die and leave a wife, but no child, the man shall marry the widow and raise up a family for his brother.' | Master, in the law Moses says, If a man's brother comes to his end, and has a wife still living and no child, it is right for his brother to take his wife, and get a family for his brother. | Master, Moses wrote to us, If a man's brother shall die, and leave his wife, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise seed to his brother. |
Mark 12:20 | There were once seven brothers, the eldest of whom married a wife, but at his death left no family. | There were seven brothers: and the first took a wife, and at his death there were no offspring; | Now there were seven brothers: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. |
Mark 12:21 | The second married her, and died, leaving no family; and the third did the same. | And the second took her, and at his death there were no offspring; and the third the same: | And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. |
Mark 12:22 | And so did the rest of the seven, all dying childless. Finally the woman also died. | And all the seven had no seed. Last of all the woman herself came to her death. | And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also. |
Mark 12:23 | At the Resurrection whose wife will she be? For they all seven married her." | In the future life, when they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for the seven had her for a wife. | In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her for a wife. |
Mark 12:24 | "Is not this the cause of your error," replied Jesus "your ignorance alike of the Scriptures and of the power of God? | Jesus said to them, Is not this the reason for your error, that you have no knowledge of the holy Writings or of the power of God? | And Jesus answering, said to them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? |
Mark 12:25 | For when they have risen from among the dead, men do not marry and women are not given in marriage, but they are as angels are in Heaven. | When they come back from the dead, they do not get married, but are like the angels in heaven. | For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels who are in heaven. |
Mark 12:26 | But as to the dead, that they rise to life, have you never read in the Book of Moses, in the passage about the Bush, how God said to him, `I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?' | But as to the dead coming back to life; have you not seen in the book of Moses, about the burning thorn-tree, how God said to him, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? | And concerning the dead that they rise; have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke to him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? |
Mark 12:27 | He is not the God of dead, but of living men. You are in grave error." | He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: you are greatly in error. | He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. |
Mark 12:28 | Then one of the Scribes, who had heard them disputing and well knew that Jesus had given them an answer to the point, and a forcible one, came forward and asked Him, "Which is the chief of all the Commandments?" | And one of the scribes came, and hearing their argument together, and seeing that he had given them a good answer, put the question to him, Which law is the first of all? | And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? |
Mark 12:29 | "The chief Commandment," replied Jesus, "is this: `Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; | Jesus said in answer, The first is, Give ear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; | And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord. |
Mark 12:30 | and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, thy whole soul, thy whole mind, and thy whole strength.' | And you are to have love for the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. | And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. |
Mark 12:31 | "The second is this: `Thou shalt love thy fellow man as thou lovest thyself.' "Other Commandment greater than these there is none." | The second is this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. There is no other law greater than these. | And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: there is no other commandment greater than these. |
Mark 12:32 | So the Scribe said to Him, "Rightly, in very truth, Rabbi, have you said that He stands alone, and there is none but He; | And the scribe said to him, Truly, Master, you have well said that he is one, and there is no other but he: | And the scribe said to him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is no other but he. |
Mark 12:33 | and To love Him with all one's heart, with all one's understanding, and with all one's strength, and to love one's fellow man no less than oneself, is far better than all our whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices." | And to have love for him with all the heart, and with all the mind, and with all the strength, and to have the same love for his neighbour as for himself, is much more than all forms of offerings. | And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices. |
Mark 12:34 | Perceiving that the Scribe had answered wisely Jesus said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." No one from that time forward ventured to put any question to Him. | And when Jesus saw that he gave a wise answer, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And every man after that was in fear of questioning him any more. | And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. |
Mark 12:35 | But, while teaching in the Temple, Jesus asked, "How is it the Scribes say that the Christ is a son of David? | And Jesus, when he was teaching in the Temple, said, How do the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? | And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the son of David? |
Mark 12:36 | David himself said, taught by the Holy Spirit, "`The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, until I have made thy foes a footstool under thy feet.' | David himself said in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Be seated at my right hand, till I put those who are against you under your feet. | For David himself said by the Holy Spirit, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thy enemies thy footstool. |
Mark 12:37 | "David himself calls Him `Lord:' how then can He be his son?" And the mass of people found pleasure in listening to Jesus. | David himself gives him the name of Lord; and how then is he his son? And the common people gave ear to him gladly. | David therefore himself calleth him Lord, and whence is he then his son? and the common people heard him gladly. |
Mark 12:38 | Moreover in the course of His teaching He said, "Be on your guard against the Scribes who like to walk about in long robes and to be bowed to in places of public resort, | And in his teaching he said, Be on your watch against the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes and be respected in the market-places, | And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the market-places, |
Mark 12:39 | and to occupy the best seats in the synagogues and at dinner parties, | And to have the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts; | And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: |
Mark 12:40 | and who swallow up the property of widows and then mask their wickedness by making long prayers: these men will receive far heavier punishment." | Who take away the property of widows, and before the eyes of men make long prayers; these will be judged more hardly. | Who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. |
Mark 12:41 | Having taken a seat opposite the Treasury, He observed how the people were dropping money into the Treasury, and that many of the wealthy threw in large sums. | And he took a seat by the place where the money was kept, and saw how the people put money into the boxes: and a number who had wealth put in much. | And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. |
Mark 12:42 | But there came one poor widow and dropped in two farthings, equal in value to a halfpenny. | And there came a poor widow, and she put in two little bits of money, which make a farthing. | And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. |
Mark 12:43 | So He called His disciples to Him and said, "In solemn truth I tell you that this widow, poor as she is, has thrown in more than all the other contributors to the Treasury; | And he made his disciples come to him, and said to them, Truly I say to you, This poor widow has put in more than all those who are putting money into the box: | And he called his disciples, and saith to them, Verily I say to you, that this poor widow hath cast in more, than all they who have cast into the treasury. |
Mark 12:44 | for they have all contributed out of what they could well spare, but she out of her need has thrown in all she possessed all she had to live on." | Because they all put in something out of what they had no need for; but she out of her need put in all she had, even all her living. | For all they cast in of their abundance: but she of her want cast in all that she had, even all her living. |
