John 9:1 | As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth. | And when he went on his way, he saw a man blind from birth. | As he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth. |
John 9:2 | So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind?" | And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth? | His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" |
John 9:3 | "Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him. | Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him. | Jesus answered, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents. But, that the works of God might be revealed in him, |
John 9:4 | We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work. | While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done. | I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work. |
John 9:5 | When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world." | As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. | When I am in the world, I am the light of the world." |
John 9:6 | After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him, | Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes, | When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man's eyes with the mud, |
John 9:7 | "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" the name means `Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see. | And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see. | and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he went away, washed, and came seeing. |
John 9:8 | His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" | Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people? | The neighbors therefore, and those who saw that he was blind, before, said, "Isn't this he who sat and begged?" |
John 9:9 | "Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man." | Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he. | Others said, "It is he." Still others said, "He is like him." He said, "I am he." |
John 9:10 | "How then were your eyes opened?" they asked. | So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open? | They said therefore to him, "How were your eyes opened?" |
John 9:11 | "He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight." | His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see. | He answered, "A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, "Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash." So I went away and washed, and I received sight." |
John 9:12 | "Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know. | And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge. | Then they asked him, "Where is he?" He said, "I don't know." |
John 9:13 | They brought him to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. | They took him before the Pharisees this man who had been blind. | They brought him who before was blind to the Pharisees. |
John 9:14 | Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath. | Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath. | It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. |
John 9:15 | So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see." | So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see. | Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, "He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see." |
John 9:16 | This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others. | Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them. | Some therefore of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he doesn't keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" There was division among them. |
John 9:17 | And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied. | Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet. | Therefore they asked the blind man again, "What do you say about him, in that he opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." |
John 9:18 | The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him that he had been blind and had obtained his sight until they called his parents and asked them, | Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open, | The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight, |
John 9:19 | "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?" | And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see? | and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?" |
John 9:20 | "We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind; | In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth: | His parents answered them, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; |
John 9:21 | but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it." | But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself. | but how he now sees, we don't know; or who opened his eyes, we don't know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself." |
John 9:22 | Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue. | They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue. | His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. |
John 9:23 | That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself." | That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him. | Therefore his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him." |
John 9:24 | A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner." | So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner. | So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner." |
John 9:25 | "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know that I was once blind and that now I can see." | He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see. | He therefore answered, "I don't know if he is a sinner. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see." |
John 9:26 | "What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?" | Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes? | They said to him again, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" |
John 9:27 | "I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?" | His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples? | He answered them, "I told you already, and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?" |
John 9:28 | Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. | They became abusive towards him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. |
John 9:29 | We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from." | We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from. | We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don't know where he comes from." |
John 9:30 | "Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes! | The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes. | The man answered them, "How amazing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. |
John 9:31 | We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens. | We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open. | We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, he listens to him. |
John 9:32 | From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth. | In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open. | Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. |
John 9:33 | Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing." | If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything. | If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." |
John 9:34 | "You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do *you* teach *us*?" And they put him out of the synagogue. | Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue. | They answered him, "You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?" They threw him out. |
John 9:35 | Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" | It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man? | Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of God?" |
John 9:36 | "Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him." | He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him. | He answered, "Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?" |
John 9:37 | "You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you." | Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you. | Jesus said to him, "You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you." |
John 9:38 | "I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet. | And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship. | He said, "Lord, I believe!" and he worshipped him. |
John 9:39 | "I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind." | And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind. | Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, that those who don't see may see; and that those who see may become blind." |
John 9:40 | These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are *we* also blind?" | These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind? | Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, "Are we also blind?" |
John 9:41 | "If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!" | Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still. | Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore your sin remains. |
