2nd-Peter 3:1 | This letter which I am now writing to you, dear friends, is my second letter. In both my letters I seek to revive in your honest minds the memory of certain things, | My loved ones, this is now my second letter to you, and in this as in the first, I am attempting to keep your true minds awake; | This, now, beloved, a second letter to you I write, in both which I stir up your pure mind in reminding [you], |
2nd-Peter 3:2 | so that you may recall the words spoken long ago by the holy Prophets, and the commandments of our Lord and Saviour given you through your Apostles. | So that you may keep in mind the words of the holy prophets in the past, and the law of the Lord and Saviour which was given to you by his Apostles. | to be mindful of the sayings said before by the holy prophets, and of the command of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour, |
2nd-Peter 3:3 | But, above all, remember that, in the last days, men will come who make a mock at everything men governed only by their own passions, | Having first of all the knowledge that in the last days there will be men who, ruled by their evil desires, will make sport of holy things, | this first knowing, that there shall come in the latter end of the days scoffers, according to their own desires going on, |
2nd-Peter 3:4 | and, asking, "What has become of His promised Return? For from the time our forefathers fell asleep all things continue as they have been ever since the creation of the world." | Saying, Where is the hope of his coming? From the death of the fathers till now everything has gone on as it was from the making of the world. | and saying, `Where is the promise of his presence? for since the fathers did fall asleep, all things so remain from the beginning of the creation;` |
2nd-Peter 3:5 | For they are wilfully blind to the fact that there were heavens which existed of old, and an earth, the latter arising out of water and extending continuously through water, by the command of God; | But in taking this view they put out of their minds the memory that in the old days there was a heaven, and an earth lifted out of the water and circled by water, by the word of God; | for this is unobserved by them willingly, that the heavens were of old, and the earth out of water and through water standing together by the word of God, |
2nd-Peter 3:6 | and that, by means of these, the then existing race of men was overwhelmed with water and perished. | And that the world which then was came to an end through the overflowing of the waters. | through which the then world, by water having been deluged, was destroyed; |
2nd-Peter 3:7 | But the present heavens and the present earth are, by the command of the same God, kept stored up, reserved for fire in preparation for a day of judgement and of destruction for the ungodly. | But the present heaven and the present earth have been kept for destruction by fire, which is waiting for them on the day of the judging and destruction of evil men. | and the present heavens and the earth, by the same word are treasured, for fire being kept to a day of judgment and destruction of the impious men. |
2nd-Peter 3:8 | But there is one thing, dear friends, which you must not forget. With the Lord one day resembles a thousand years and a thousand years resemble one day. | But, my loved ones, keep in mind this one thing, that with the Lord one day is the same as a thousand years, and a thousand years are no more than one day. | And this one thing let not be unobserved by you, beloved, that one day with the Lord [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day; |
2nd-Peter 3:9 | The Lord is not slow in fulfilling His promise, in the sense in which some men speak of slowness. But He bears patiently with you, His desire being that no one should perish but that all should come to repentance. | The Lord is not slow in keeping his word, as he seems to some, but he is waiting in mercy for you, not desiring the destruction of any, but that all may be turned from their evil ways. | the Lord is not slow in regard to the promise, as certain count slowness, but is long-suffering to us, not counselling any to be lost but all to pass on to reformation, |
2nd-Peter 3:10 | The day of the Lord will come like a thief it will be a day on which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, the elements be destroyed in the fierce heat, and the earth and all the works of man be utterly burnt up. | But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; and in that day the heavens will be rolled up with a great noise, and the substance of the earth will be changed by violent heat, and the world and everything in it will be burned up. | and it will come the day of the Lord as a thief in the night, in which the heavens with a rushing noise will pass away, and the elements with burning heat be dissolved, and earth and the works in it shall be burnt up. |
2nd-Peter 3:11 | Since all these things are thus pre-destined to dissolution, what sort of men ought you to be found to be in all holy living and godly conduct, | Seeing then that all these things are coming to such an end, what sort of persons is it right for you to be, in all holy behaviour and righteousness, | All these, then, being dissolved, what kind of persons doth it behove you to be in holy behaviours and pious acts? |
2nd-Peter 3:12 | eagerly looking forward to the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens, all ablaze, will be destroyed, and the elements will melt in the fierce heat? | Looking for and truly desiring the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will come to an end through fire, and the substance of the earth will be changed by the great heat? | waiting for and hasting to the presence of the day of God, by which the heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and the elements with burning heat shall melt; |
2nd-Peter 3:13 | But in accordance with His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness will dwell. | But having faith in his word, we are looking for a new heaven and a new earth, which will be the resting-place of righteousness. | and for new heavens and a new earth according to His promise we do wait, in which righteousness doth dwell; |
2nd-Peter 3:14 | Therefore, dear friends, since you have these expectations, earnestly seek to be found in His presence, free from blemish or reproach, in peace. | For this reason, my loved ones, as you are looking for these things, take great care that when he comes you may be in peace before him, free from sin and every evil thing. | wherefore, beloved, these things waiting for, be diligent, spotless and unblameable, by Him to be found in peace, |
2nd-Peter 3:15 | And always regard the patient forbearance of our Lord as salvation, as our dear brother Paul also has written to you in virtue of the wisdom granted to him. | And be certain that the long waiting of the Lord is for salvation; even as our brother Paul has said in his letters to you, from the wisdom which was given to him; | and the long-suffering of our Lord count ye salvation, according as also our beloved brother Paul according to the wisdom given to him did write to you, |
2nd-Peter 3:16 | That is what he says in all his letters, when speaking in them of these things. In those letters there are some statements hard to understand, which ill-taught and unprincipled people pervert, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own ruin. | And as he said in all his letters, which had to do with these things; in which are some hard sayings, so that, like the rest of the holy Writings, they are twisted by those who are uncertain and without knowledge, to the destruction of their souls. | as also in all the epistles, speaking in them concerning these things, among which things are certain hard to be understood, which the untaught and unstable do wrest, as also the other Writings, unto their own destruction. |
2nd-Peter 3:17 | You, therefore, dear friends, having been warned beforehand, must continually be on your guard so as not to be led astray by the false teaching of immoral men nor fall from your own stedfastness. | For this reason, my loved ones, having knowledge of these things before they take place, take care that you are not turned away by the error of the uncontrolled, so falling from your true faith. | Ye, then, beloved, knowing before, take heed, lest, together with the error of the impious being led away, ye may fall from your own stedfastness, |
2nd-Peter 3:18 | But be always growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be all glory, both now and to the day of Eternity! | But be increased in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. May he have glory now and for ever. So be it. | and increase ye in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; to him [is] the glory both now, and to the day of the age! Amen. |
