John 13:1Now just before the Feast of the Passover this incident took place. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father; and having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.Now before the feast of the Passover, it was clear to Jesus that the time had come for him to go away from this world to the Father. Having once had love for those in the world who were his, his love for them went on to the end.And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour hath come, that he may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who [are] in the world to the end he loved them.
John 13:2While supper was proceeding, the Devil having by this time suggested to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, the thought of betraying Him, Jesus,So while a meal was going on, the Evil One having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to be false to him,And supper being come, the devil already having put [it] into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver him up,
John 13:3although He knew that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was now going to God,Jesus, being conscious that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God,Jesus knowing that all things the Father hath given to him into [his] hands, and that from God he came forth, and unto God he goeth,
John 13:4rose from the table, threw off His upper garments, and took a towel and tied it round Him.Got up from table, put off his robe and took a cloth and put it round him.doth rise from the supper, and doth lay down his garments, and having taken a towel, he girded himself;
John 13:5Then He poured water into a basin, and proceeded to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel which He had put round Him.Then he put water into a basin and was washing the feet of the disciples and drying them with the cloth which was round him.afterward he putteth water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which he was being girded.
John 13:6When He came to Simon Peter, Peter objected. "Master," he said, "are *you* going to wash my feet?"So he came to Simon Peter. Peter said, Lord, are my feet to be washed by you?He cometh, therefore, unto Simon Peter, and that one saith to him, `Sir, thou dost thou wash my feet?`
John 13:7"What I am doing," answered Jesus, "for the present you do not know, but afterwards you shall know."And Jesus, answering, said to him, What I do is not clear to you now, but it will be clear to you in time to come.Jesus answered and said to him, `That which I do thou hast not known now, but thou shalt know after these things;`
John 13:8"Never, while the world lasts," said Peter, "shall you wash my feet." "If I do not wash you," replied Jesus, "you have no share with me."Peter said, I will never let my feet be washed by you, never. Jesus said in answer, If I do not make you clean you have no part with me.Peter saith to him, `Thou mayest not wash my feet to the age.` Jesus answered him, `If I may not wash thee, thou hast no part with me;`
John 13:9"Master," said Peter, "wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but my hands and my head.Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.`
John 13:10"Any one who has lately bathed," said Jesus, "does not need to wash more than his feet, but is clean all over. And you my disciples are clean, and yet this is not true of all of you."Jesus said to him, He who is bathed has need only to have his feet washed and then he is clean all over: and you, my disciples, are clean, but not all of you.Jesus saith to him, `He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;`
John 13:11For He knew who was betraying Him, and that was why He said, "You are not all of you clean."(He had knowledge who was false to him; that is why he said, You are not all clean.)for he knew him who is delivering him up; because of this he said, `Ye are not all clean.`
John 13:12So after He had washed their feet, put on His garments again, and returned to the table, He said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you?Then, after washing their feet and putting on his robe again, he took his seat and said to them, Do you see what I have done to you?When, therefore, he washed their feet, and took his garments, having reclined (at meat) again, he said to them, `Do ye know what I have done to you?
John 13:13You call me `The Rabbi' and `The Master,' and rightly so, for such I am.You give me the name of Master and Lord: and you are right; that is what I am.ye call me, The Teacher and The Lord, and ye say well, for I am;
John 13:14If I then, your Master and Rabbi, have washed your feet, it is also your duty to wash one another's feet.If then I, the Lord and the Master, have made your feet clean, it is right for you to make one another's feet clean.if then I did wash your feet the Lord and the Teacher ye also ought to wash one another`s feet.
John 13:15For I have set you an example in order that you may do what I have done to you.I have given you an example, so that you may do what I have done to you.`For an example I gave to you, that, according as I did to you, ye also may do;
John 13:16In most solemn truth I tell you that a servant is not superior to his master, nor is a messenger superior to him who sent him.Truly I say to you, A servant is not greater than his lord; and he who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him.verily, verily, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him;
John 13:17If you know all this, blessed are you if you act accordingly.If these things are clear to you, happy are you if you do them.if these things ye have known, happy are ye, if ye may do them;
John 13:18I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but things are as they are in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says, `He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'I am not talking of you all: I have knowledge of my true disciples, but things are as they are, so that the Writings may come true, The foot of him who takes bread with me is lifted up against me.not concerning you all do I speak; I have known whom I chose for myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with me, did lift up against me his heel.
John 13:19From this time forward I tell you things before they happen, in order that when they do happen you may believe that I am He.From this time forward, I give you knowledge of things before they come about, so that when they come about you may have belief that I am he.`From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he];
John 13:20In most solemn truth I tell you that he who receives whoever I send receives me, and that he who receives me receives Him who sent me."Truly I say to you, He who takes to his heart anyone whom I send, takes me to his heart; and he who so takes me, takes him who sent me.verily, verily, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, doth receive me; and he who is receiving me, doth receive Him who sent me.`
John 13:21After speaking thus Jesus was troubled in spirit and said with deep earnestness, "In most solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me."When Jesus had said this he was troubled in spirit, and gave witness, saying, Truly I say to you, that one of you will be false to me.These things having said, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and did testify, and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will deliver me up;`
John 13:22The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know to which of them He was referring.Then the eyes of the disciples were turned on one another, in doubt as to whom he had in mind.the disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh.
John 13:23There was at table one of His disciples the one Jesus loved reclining with his head on Jesus's bosom.There was at table one of his disciples, the one dear to Jesus, resting his head on Jesus' breast.And there was one of his disciples reclining (at meat) in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving;
John 13:24Making a sign therefore to him, Simon Peter said, "Tell us to whom he is referring."Making a sign to him, Simon Peter said, Who is it he is talking about?Simon Peter, then, doth beckon to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom he speaketh,
John 13:25So he, having his head on Jesus's bosom, leaned back and asked, "Master, who is it?"He, then, resting his head on Jesus' breast, said to him, Lord, who is it?and that one having leant back on the breast of Jesus, respondeth to him, `Sir, who is it?`
John 13:26"It is the one," answered Jesus, "for whom I shall dip this piece of bread and to whom I shall give it." Accordingly He dipped the piece of bread, and took it and gave it to Judas, the son of the Iscariot Simon.This was the answer Jesus gave: It is the one to whom I will give this bit of bread after I have put it in the vessel. Then he took the bit of bread, put it into the vessel, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.Jesus answereth, `That one it is to whom I, having dipped the morsel, shall give it;` and having dipped the morsel, he giveth [it] to Judas of Simon, Iscariot.
John 13:27Then, after Judas had received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. "Lose no time about it," said Jesus to him.And when Judas took the bread Satan went into him. Then Jesus said to him, Do quickly what you have to do.And after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one, Jesus, therefore, saith to him, `What thou dost do quickly;`
John 13:28But why He said this no one else at the table understood.Now it was not clear to anyone at table why he said this to him.and none of those reclining at meat knew for what intent he said this to him,
John 13:29Some, however, supposed that because Judas had the money-box Jesus meant, "Buy what we require for the Festival," or that he should give something to the poor.Some were of the opinion that because Judas kept the money-bag Jesus said to him, Get the things we have need of for the feast; or, that he was to give something to the poor.for certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus saith to him, `Buy what we have need of for the feast;` or that he may give something to the poor;
John 13:30So Judas took the piece of bread and immediately went out. And it was night.So Judas, having taken the bit of bread, straight away went out: and it was night.having received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night.
John 13:31So when he was gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.Then when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is glory given to the Son of man, and God is given glory in him.When, therefore, he went forth, Jesus saith, `Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in him;
John 13:32Moreover God will glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him without delay.If God is given glory in him, God will give him glory in himself, and will give him glory even now.if God was glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself; yea, immediately He will glorify him.
John 13:33Dear children, I am still with you a little longer. You will seek me, but, as I said to the Jews, `Where I am going you cannot come,' so for the present I say to you.My dear children, I am only to be with you a little longer. Then you will be looking for me: and as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, Where I am going you may not come.`Little children, yet a little am I with you; ye will seek me, and, according as I said to the Jews Whither I go away, ye are not able to come, to you also I do say [it] now.
John 13:34A new commandment I give you, to love one another; that as I have loved you, you also may love one another.I give you a new law: Have love one for another; even as I have had love for you, so are you to have love one for another.`A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; according as I did love you, that ye also love one another;
John 13:35It is by this that every one will know that you are my disciples if you love one another."By this it will be clear to all men that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.in this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye may have love one to another.`
John 13:36"Master," inquired Simon Peter, "where are you going?" "Where I am going," replied Jesus, "you cannot be my follower now, but you shall be later."Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus said in answer, Where I am going you may not come with me now, but you will come later.Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, whither dost thou go away?` Jesus answered him, `Whither I go away, thou art not able now to follow me, but afterward thou shalt follow me.`
John 13:37"Master," asked Peter again, "why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life on your behalf.Peter said to him, Why may I not come with you even now? I will give up my life for you.Peter saith to him, `Sir, wherefore am I not able to follow thee now? my life for thee I will lay down;`
John 13:38"You say you will lay down your life on my behalf!" said Jesus; "in most solemn truth I tell you that the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me."Jesus said in answer, Will you give up your life for me? Truly I say to you, Before the cry of the cock you will have said three times that you are not my disciple.Jesus answered him, `Thy life for me thou wilt lay down! verily, verily, I say to thee, a cock will not crow till thou mayest deny me thrice.`
