Matthew 13:1 | That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake, | And that [same] day Jesus went out from the house and sat down by the sea. | On that day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. |
Matthew 13:2 | when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore. | And great crowds were gathered together to him, so that going on board ship himself he sat down, and the whole crowd stood on the shore. | And there were gathered unto him great multitudes, so that he entered into a boat, and sat; and all the multitude stood on the beach. |
Matthew 13:3 | He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow. | And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went out to sow: | And he spake to them many things in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went forth to sow; |
Matthew 13:4 | As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up. | and as he sowed, some [grains] fell along the way, and the birds came and devoured them; | and as he sowed, some [seeds] fell by the way side, and the birds came and devoured them: |
Matthew 13:5 | Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth; | and others fell upon the rocky places where they had not much earth, and immediately they sprang up out of [the ground] because of not having [any] depth of earth, | and others fell upon the rocky places, where they had not much earth: and straightway they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth: |
Matthew 13:6 | but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up. | but when the sun rose they were burned up, and because of not having [any] root were dried up; | and when the sun was risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. |
Matthew 13:7 | Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it. | and others fell upon the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them; | And others fell upon the thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked them: |
Matthew 13:8 | But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty. | and others fell upon the good ground, and produced fruit, one a hundred, one sixty, and one thirty. | and others fell upon the good ground, and yielded fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. |
Matthew 13:9 | Listen, every one who has ears!" | He that has ears, let him hear. | He that hath ears, let him hear. |
Matthew 13:10 | (And His disciples came and asked Him, "Why do you speak to them in figurative language?" | And the disciples came up and said to him, Why speakest thou to them in parables? | And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? |
Matthew 13:11 | "Because," He replied, "while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not. | And he answering said to them, Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given; | And he answered and said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. |
Matthew 13:12 | For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away. | for whoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall be caused to be in abundance; but he who has not, even what he has shall be taken away from him. | For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath. |
Matthew 13:13 | I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand. | For this cause I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear nor understand; | Therefore speak I to them in parables; because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. |
Matthew 13:14 | And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: "`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see. | and in them is filled up the prophecy of Esaias, which says, Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand, and beholding ye shall behold and not see; | And unto them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive: |
Matthew 13:15 | For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.' | for the heart of this people has grown fat, and they have heard heavily with their ears, and they have closed their eyes as asleep, lest they should see with the eyes, and hear with the ears, and understand with the heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. | For this people's heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them. |
Matthew 13:16 | "But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. | But blessed are *your* eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear; | But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. |
Matthew 13:17 | For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them. | for verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous [men] have desired to see the things which ye behold and did not see [them], and to hear the things which ye hear and did not hear [them]. | For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which ye see, and saw them not; and to hear the things which ye hear, and heard them not. |
Matthew 13:18 | "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower. | *Ye*, therefore, hear the parable of the sower. | Hear then ye the parable of the sower. |
Matthew 13:19 | When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side. | From every one who hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand [it], the wicked one comes and catches away what was sown in his heart: this is he that is sown by the wayside. | When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, [then] cometh the evil [one], and snatcheth away that which hath been sown in his heart. This is he that was sown by the way side. |
Matthew 13:20 | He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy. | But he that is sown on the rocky places this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, | And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it; |
Matthew 13:21 | It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls. | but has no root in himself, but is for a time only; and when tribulation or persecution happens on account of the word, he is immediately offended. | yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth. |
Matthew 13:22 | He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful. | And he that is sown among the thorns this is he who hears the word, and the anxious care of this life, and the deceit of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. | And he that was sown among the thorns, this is he that heareth the word; and the care of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. |
Matthew 13:23 | But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.") | But he that is sown upon the good ground this is he who hears and understands the word, who bears fruit also, and produces, one a hundred, one sixty, and one thirty. | And he that was sown upon the good ground, this is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; who verily beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. |
Matthew 13:24 | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field, | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has become like a man sowing good seed in his field; | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man that sowed good seed in his field: |
Matthew 13:25 | but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away. | but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel amongst the wheat, and went away. | but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares also among the wheat, and went away. |
Matthew 13:26 | But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also. | But when the blade shot up and produced fruit, then appeared the darnel also. | But when the blade sprang up and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. |
Matthew 13:27 | "So the farmer's men come and ask him, "`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?' | And the bondmen of the householder came up and said to him, Sir, hast thou not sown good seed in thy field? whence then has it darnel? | And the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? whence then hath it tares? |
Matthew 13:28 | "`Some enemy has done this,' he said. "`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire. | And he said to them, A man [that is] an enemy has done this. And the bondmen said to him, Wilt thou then that we should go and gather it [up]? | And he said unto them, An enemy hath done this. And the servants say unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? |
Matthew 13:29 | "`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it. | But he said, No; lest [in] gathering the darnel ye should root up the wheat with it. | But he saith, Nay; lest haply while ye gather up the tares, ye root up the wheat with them. |
Matthew 13:30 | Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'" | Suffer both to grow together unto the harvest, and in time of the harvest I will say to the harvestmen, Gather first the darnel, and bind it into bundles to burn it; but the wheat bring together into my granary. | Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn. |
Matthew 13:31 | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground. | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is like a grain of mustard [seed] which a man took and sowed in his field; | Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: |
Matthew 13:32 | It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches." | which is less indeed than all seeds, but when it is grown is greater than herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and roost in its branches. | which indeed is less than all seeds; but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the heaven come and lodge in the branches thereof. |
Matthew 13:33 | Another parable He spoke to them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen." | He spoke another parable to them: The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until it had been all leavened. | Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened. |
Matthew 13:34 | All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them, | All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without a parable he did not speak to them, | All these things spake Jesus in parables unto the multitudes; and without a parable spake he nothing unto them: |
Matthew 13:35 | in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, "I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things." | so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from [the] world's foundation. | that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world. |
Matthew 13:36 | When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field." | Then, having dismissed the crowds, he went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Expound to us the parable of the darnel of the field. | Then he left the multitudes, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Explain unto us the parable of the tares of the field. |
Matthew 13:37 | "The sower of the good seed," He replied, "is the Son of Man; | But he answering said, He that sows the good seed is the Son of man, | And he answered and said, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; |
Matthew 13:38 | the field is the world; the good seed these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one. | and the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom, but the darnel are the sons of the evil [one]; | and the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil [one]; |
Matthew 13:39 | The enemy who sows the darnel is *the Devil*; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels. | and the enemy who has sowed it is the devil; and the harvest is [the] completion of [the] age, and the harvestmen are angels. | and the enemy that sowed them is the devil: and the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are angels. |
Matthew 13:40 | As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age. | As then the darnel is gathered and is burned in the fire, thus it shall be in the completion of the age. | As therefore the tares are gathered up and burned with fire; so shall it be in the end of the world. |
Matthew 13:41 | The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws; | The Son of man shall send his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all offences, and those that practise lawlessness; | The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and them that do iniquity, |
Matthew 13:42 | and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth. | and they shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. | and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:43 | Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears! | Then the righteous shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He that has ears, let him hear. | Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He that hath ears, let him hear. |
Matthew 13:44 | "The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground. | The kingdom of the heavens is like a treasure hid in the field, which a man having found has hid, and for the joy of it goes and sells all whatever he has, and buys that field. | The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field; which a man found, and hid; and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. |
Matthew 13:45 | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls. | Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls; | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a merchant seeking goodly pearls: |
Matthew 13:46 | He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it. | and having found one pearl of great value, he went and sold all whatever he had and bought it. | and having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it. |
Matthew 13:47 | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts. | Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a seine which has been cast into the sea, and which has gathered together of every kind, | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: |
Matthew 13:48 | When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away. | which, when it has been filled, having drawn up on the shore and sat down, they gathered the good into vessels and cast the worthless out. | which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach; and they sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but the bad they cast away. |
Matthew 13:49 | So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous, | Thus shall it be in the completion of the age: the angels shall go forth and sever the wicked from the midst of the just, | So shall it be in the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the righteous, |
Matthew 13:50 | and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth." | and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. | and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:51 | "Have you understood all this?" He asked. "Yes," they said. | Jesus says to them, Have ye understood all these things? They say to him, Yea, [Lord]. | Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea. |
Matthew 13:52 | "Therefore," He said, "remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old." | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe discipled to the kingdom of the heavens is like a man [that is] a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old. | And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. |
Matthew 13:53 | Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed. | And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these parables he withdrew thence. | And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. |
Matthew 13:54 | And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, "Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers? | And having come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence has this [man] this wisdom and these works of power? | And coming into his own country he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? |
Matthew 13:55 | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah? | Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? | Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? |
Matthew 13:56 | And his sisters are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?" | And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then has this [man] all these things? | And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? |
Matthew 13:57 | So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, "There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family." | And they were offended in him. And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, unless in his country and in his house. | And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house. |
Matthew 13:58 | And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith. | And he did not there many works of power, because of their unbelief. | And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. |
