Matthew 14:1About that time Herod the Tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,At that time news of Jesus came to Herod the king;
Matthew 14:2and he said to his courtiers, "This is John the Baptist: he has come back to life and that is why these miraculous Powers are working in him."and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: *he* is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him.And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has come back from the dead, and so these powers are working in him.
Matthew 14:3For Herod had arrested John, and had put him in chains, and imprisoned him, for the sake of Herodias his brother Philip's wife,For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother.For Herod had taken John and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
Matthew 14:4because John had persistently said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.Because John had said to him, It is not right for you to have her.
Matthew 14:5And he would have liked to put him to death, but was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a Prophet.And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet.And he would have put him to death, but for his fear of the people, because in their eyes John was a prophet.
Matthew 14:6But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before all the company, and so pleased HerodBut when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod;But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias was dancing before them, and Herod was pleased with her.
Matthew 14:7that with an oath he promised to give her whatever she asked.whereupon he promised with oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.So he gave her his word with an oath to let her have whatever she might make request for.
Matthew 14:8So she, instigated by her mother, said, "Give me here on a dish the head of John the Baptist."But she, being set on by her mother, says, Give me here upon a dish the head of John the baptist.And she, at her mother's suggestion, said, Give me here on a plate the head of John the Baptist.
Matthew 14:9The king was deeply vexed, yet because of his repeated oath and of the guests at his table he ordered it to be given her,And the king was grieved; but on account of the oaths, and those lying at table with [him], he commanded [it] to be given.And the king was sad; but because of his oaths and because of his guests, he gave the order for it to be given to her;
Matthew 14:10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.And he sent and beheaded John in the prison;And he sent and had John's head cut off in the prison.
Matthew 14:11The head was brought on a dish and given to the young girl, and she took it to her mother.and his head was brought upon a dish, and was given to the damsel, and she carried [it] to her mother.And his head was put on a plate and given to the girl; and she took it to her mother.
Matthew 14:12Then John's disciples went and removed the body and buried it, and came and informed Jesus.And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and came and brought word to Jesus.And his disciples came, and took up his body and put it in the earth; and they went and gave Jesus news of what had taken place.
Matthew 14:13Upon receiving these tidings, Jesus went away by boat to an uninhabited and secluded district; but the people heard of it and followed Him in crowds from the towns by land.And Jesus, having heard it, went away thence by ship to a desert place apart. And the crowds having heard [of it] followed him on foot from the cities.Now when it came to the ears of Jesus, he went away from there in a boat, to a waste place by himself: and the people hearing of it, went after him on foot from the towns.
Matthew 14:14So Jesus went out and saw an immense multitude, and felt compassion for them, and cured those of them who were out of health.And going out he saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion about them, and healed their infirm.And he came out and saw a great number of people and he had pity on them, and made well those of them who were ill.
Matthew 14:15But when evening was come, the disciples came to Him and said, "This is an uninhabited place, and the best of the day is now gone; send the people away to go into the villages and buy something to eat."But when even was come, his disciples came to him saying, The place is desert, and [much of] the [day] time already gone by; dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.And when evening had come, the disciples came to him, saying, This place is waste land, and the time is now past; send the people away so that they may go into the towns and get themselves food.
Matthew 14:16"They need not go away," replied Jesus; "you yourselves must give them something to eat."But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give *ye* them to eat.But Jesus said to them, There is no need for them to go away; give them food yourselves.
Matthew 14:17"We have nothing here," they said, "but five loaves and a couple of fish."But they say to him, We have not here save five loaves and two fishes.And they say to him, We have here but five cakes of bread and two fishes.
Matthew 14:18"Bring them here to me," He said,And he said, Bring them here to me.And he said, Give them to me.
Matthew 14:19and He told all the people to sit down on the grass. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and after looking up to heaven and blessing them, He broke up the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples distributed them to the people.And having commanded the crowds to recline upon the grass, having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed: and having broken the loaves, he gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds.And he gave orders for the people to be seated on the grass; and he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing, and made division of the food, and gave it to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people.
Matthew 14:20So all ate, and were fully satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they gathered up, filling twelve baskets.And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was over and above of fragments twelve hand-baskets full.And they all took of the food and had enough: and they took up twelve baskets full of broken bits which were not used.
Matthew 14:21Those who had eaten were about 5,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children.But those that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.And those who had food were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
Matthew 14:22Immediately afterwards He made the disciples go on board the boat and cross to the opposite shore, leaving Him to dismiss the people.And immediately he compelled the disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before him to the other side, until he should have dismissed the crowds.And straight away he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, till he had sent the people away.
Matthew 14:23When He had done this, He climbed the hill to pray in solitude. Night came on, and he was there alone.And having dismissed the crowds, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. And when even was come, he was alone there,And after he had sent the people away, he went up into the mountain by himself for prayer: and when evening was come, he was there by himself.
Matthew 14:24Meanwhile the boat was far out on the Lake, buffeted and tossed by the waves, the wind being adverse.but the ship was already in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, and was troubled by the waves: for the wind was against them.
Matthew 14:25But towards daybreak He went to them, walking over the waves.But in the fourth watch of the night he went off to them, walking on the sea.And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
Matthew 14:26When the disciples saw Him walking on the waves, they were greatly alarmed. "It is a spirit," they exclaimed, and they cried out with terror.And the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, It is an apparition. And they cried out through fear.And when they saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they gave cries of fear.
Matthew 14:27But instantly Jesus spoke to them, and said, "There is no danger; it is I; do not be afraid."But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Take courage; it is *I*: be not afraid.But straight away Jesus said to them, Take heart; it is I, have no fear.
Matthew 14:28"Master," answered Peter, "if it is you, bid me come to you upon the water."And Peter answering him said, Lord, if it be *thou*, command me to come to thee upon the waters.And Peter, answering, said to him, Lord, if it is you, give me the order to come to you on the water.
Matthew 14:29"Come," said Jesus. Then Peter climbed down from the boat and walked upon the water to go to Him.And he said, Come. And Peter, having descended from the ship, walked upon the waters to go to Jesus.And he said, Come. And Peter got out of the boat, and walking on the water, went to Jesus.
Matthew 14:30But when he felt the wind he grew frightened, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Master, save me."But seeing the wind strong he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.But when he saw the wind he was in fear and, starting to go down, he gave a cry, saying, Help, Lord.
Matthew 14:31Instantly Jesus stretched out His hand and caught hold of him, saying to him, "O little faith, why did you doubt?"And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?And straight away Jesus put out his hand and took a grip of him, and said to him, O man of little faith, why were you in doubt?
Matthew 14:32So they climbed into the boat, and the wind lulled;And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell.And when they had got into the boat, the wind went down.
Matthew 14:33and the men on board fell down before him and said, "You are indeed God's Son."But those in the ship came and did homage to him, saying, Truly thou art God's Son.And those who were in the boat gave him worship, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.
Matthew 14:34When they had quite crossed over, they put ashore at Gennesaret;And having crossed over they came to the land of Gennesaret.And when they had gone across, they came to land at Gennesaret.
Matthew 14:35and the men of the place, recognizing Him, sent word into all the country round. So they brought all the sick to Him,And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent to that whole country around, and they brought to him all that were ill,And when the men of that place had news of him, they sent into all the country round about, and took to him all who were ill,
Matthew 14:36and they entreated Him that they might but touch the tassel of His outer garment; and all who did so were restored to perfect health.and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made thoroughly well.With the request that they might only put their hands on the edge of his robe: and all those who did so were made well.
