Matthew 27:1When morning came all the High Priests and the Elders of the people consulted together against Jesus to put Him to death; And when it was morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus so that they might put him to death. Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death.
Matthew 27:2and binding Him they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the Governor. And having bound him they led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor. And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler.
Matthew 27:3Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, smitten with remorse he brought back the thirty shekels to the High Priests and EldersThen Judas, who delivered him up, seeing that he had been condemned, filled with remorse, returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority,
Matthew 27:4and said, "I have sinned, in betraying to death one who is innocent." "What does that matter to us?" they replied; it is your business."saying, I have sinned [in] having delivered up guiltless blood. But they said, What is that to us? see *thou* [to that].Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business.
Matthew 27:5Flinging the shekels into the Sanctuary he left the place, and went and hanged himself. And having cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, he left the place, and went away and hanged himself. And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging.
Matthew 27:6When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, "It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood."And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, It is not lawful to cast them into the Corban, since it is [the] price of blood. And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood.
Matthew 27:7So after consulting together they spent the money in the purchase of the Potter's Field as a burial place for people not belonging to the city; And having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter for a burying-ground for strangers. And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries.
Matthew 27:8for which reason that piece of ground received the name, which it still bears, of `the Field of Blood.'Wherefore that field has been called Blood-field unto this day.For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day.
Matthew 27:9Then were fulfilled the words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, "And I took the thirty shekels, the price of the prized one on whom Israelites had set a price,Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, And I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was set a price on, whom [they who were] of the sons of Israel had set a price on,Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel;
Matthew 27:10and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me."and they gave them for the field of the potter, according as [the] Lord commanded me.And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord.
Matthew 27:11Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Governor, and the latter put the question, "Are you the King of the Jews?" "I am their King," He answered. But Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor questioned him, saying, Art *thou* the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest. And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so.
Matthew 27:12When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply. And when he was accused of the chief priests and the elders, he answered nothing. But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer.
Matthew 27:13"Do you not hear," asked Pilate, "what a mass of evidence they are bringing against you?"Then says Pilate to him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you?
Matthew 27:14But He made no reply to a single accusation, so that the Governor was greatly astonished. And he answered him not so much as one word, so that the governor wondered exceedingly. And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised.
Matthew 27:15"Now it was the Governor's custom at the Festival to release some one prisoner, whomsoever the populace desired; Now at [the] feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whom they would. Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection.
Matthew 27:16and at this time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. And they had then a notable prisoner, named Barabbas. And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas.
Matthew 27:17So when they were now assembled Pilate appealed to them. "Whom shall I release to you," he said, "Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?"They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will ye that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ?
Matthew 27:18For he knew that it was from envious hatred that Jesus had been brought before him.For he knew that they had delivered him up through envy. For he saw that for envy they had given him up.
Matthew 27:19While he was sitting on the tribunal a message came to him from his wife. "Have nothing to do with that innocent man," she said, "for during the night I have suffered terribly in a dream through him."But, as he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous [man]; for I have suffered to-day many things in a dream because of him.And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him.
Matthew 27:20The High Priests, however, and the Elders urged the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to demand the death of Jesus. But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should beg for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death.
Matthew 27:21So when the Governor a second time asked them, "Which of the two shall I release to you?" they cried, "Barabbas!"And the governor answering said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas. But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas.
Matthew 27:22"What then," said Pilate, "shall I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?" With one voice they shouted, "Let him be crucified!"Pilate says to them, What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified.Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross.
Matthew 27:23"Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they kept on furiously shouting, "Let him be crucified!"And the governor said, What evil then has he done? But they cried more than ever, saying, Let him be crucified. And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him!
Matthew 27:24So when he saw that he could gain nothing, but that on the contrary there was a riot threatening, he called for water and washed his hands in sight of them all, saying, "I am not responsible for this murder: you must answer for it."And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but that rather a tumult was arising, having taken water, washed his hands before the crowd, saying, I am guiltless of the blood of this righteous one: see *ye* [to it].So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible.
Matthew 27:25"His blood," replied all the people, "be on us and on our children!"And all the people answering said, His blood [be] on us and on our children. And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children.
Matthew 27:26Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he ordered to be scourged, and gave Him up to be crucified. Then he released to them Barabbas; but Jesus, having scourged [him], he delivered up that he might be crucified. Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross.
Matthew 27:27Then the Governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and called together the whole battalion to make sport of Him.Then the soldiers of the governor, having taken Jesus with [them] to the praetorium, gathered against him the whole band,Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together.
Matthew 27:28Stripping off His garments, they put on Him a general's short crimson cloak.and having taken off his garment, put on him a scarlet cloak; And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe.
Matthew 27:29They twisted a wreath of thorny twigs and put it on His head, and they put a sceptre of cane in His right hand, and kneeling to Him they shouted in mockery, "Long live the King of the Jews!"and having woven a crown out of thorns, they put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and, bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews.
Matthew 27:30Then they spat upon Him, and taking the cane they repeatedly struck Him on the head with it.And having spit upon him, they took the reed and beat [him] on his head. And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod.
Matthew 27:31At last, having finished their sport, they took off the cloak, clothed Him again in His own garments, and led Him away for crucifixion. And when they had mocked him, they took the cloak off him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify. And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross.
Matthew 27:32Going out they met a Cyrenaean named Simon; whom they compelled to carry His cross,And as they went forth they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; him they compelled to go [with them] that he might bear his cross. And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross.
Matthew 27:33and so they came to a place called Golgotha, which means `Skull-ground.'And having come to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a skull,And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head,
Matthew 27:34Here they gave Him a mixture of wine and gall to drink, but having tasted it He refused to drink it.they gave to him to drink vinegar mingled with gall; and having tasted [it], he would not drink. They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more.
Matthew 27:35After crucifying Him, they divided His garments among them by lot,And having crucified him, they parted his clothes amongst [themselves], casting lots. And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.
Matthew 27:36and sat down there on guard. And sitting down, they kept guard over him there. And they were seated there watching him.
Matthew 27:37Over His head they placed a written statement of the charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.And they set up over his head his accusation written: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Matthew 27:38At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one at His right hand and the other at His left. Then are crucified with him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left. Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left.
Matthew 27:39And the passers-by reviled Him. They shook their heads at HimBut the passers-by reviled him, shaking their headsAnd those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying,
Matthew 27:40and said, "You who would pull down the Sanctuary and build a new one within three days, save yourself. If you are God's Son, come down from the cross."and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou art Son of God, descend from the cross. You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Matthew 27:41In like manner the High Priests also, together with the Scribes and the Elders, taunted Him.[And] in like manner the chief priests also, mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said,
Matthew 27:42"He saved others," they said, "himself he cannot save! He is the King of Israel! Let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him.He saved others, himself he cannot save. He is King of Israel: let him descend now from the cross, and we will believe on him.A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him.
Matthew 27:43His trust is in God: let God deliver him now, if He will have him; for he said, `I am God's Son.'"He trusted upon God; let him save him now if he will [have] him. For he said, I am Son of God.He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God.
Matthew 27:44Insults of the same kind were heaped on Him even by the robbers who were being crucified with Him.And the robbers also who had been crucified with him cast the same reproaches on him.And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him.
Matthew 27:45Now from noon until three o'clock in the afternoon there was darkness over the whole land; Now from [the] sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land until [the] ninth hour; Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour.
Matthew 27:46but about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is to say, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?"but about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?
Matthew 27:47"The man is calling for Elijah," said some of the bystanders. And some of those who stood there, when they heard [it], said, This [man] calls for Elias. And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah.
Matthew 27:48One of them ran forthwith, and filling a sponge with sour wine put it on the end of a cane and offered it Him to drink; And immediately one of them running and getting a sponge, having filled [it] with vinegar and fixed [it] on a reed, gave him to drink. And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink.
Matthew 27:49while the rest said, "Let us see whether Elijah is coming to deliver him."But the rest said, Let be; let us see if Elias comes to save him.And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help.
Matthew 27:50But Jesus uttered another loud cry and then yielded up His spirit. And Jesus, having again cried with a loud voice, gave up the ghost. And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit.
Matthew 27:51Immediately the curtain of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom: the earth quaked; the rocks split;And lo, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were rent,And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken;
Matthew 27:52the tombs opened; and many of God's people who were asleep in death awoke.and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints fallen asleep arose,And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life;
Matthew 27:53And coming out of their tombs after Christ's resurrection they entered the holy city and showed themselves to many.and going out of the tombs after his arising, entered into the holy city and appeared unto many. And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people.
Matthew 27:54As for the Captain and the soldiers who were with Him keeping guard over Jesus, when they witnessed the earthquake and the other occurrences they were filled with terror, and exclaimed, "Assuredly he was God's Son."But the centurion, and they who were with him on guard over Jesus, seeing the earthquake and the things that took place, feared greatly, saying, Truly this [man] was Son of God.Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God.
Matthew 27:55And there were a number of women there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to His necessities; And there were there many women beholding from afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to him,And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs.
Matthew 27:56among them being Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zabdi.among whom was Mary of Magdala, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Matthew 27:57Towards sunset there came a wealthy inhabitant of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who himself also had become a disciple of Jesus. Now when even was come there came a rich man of Arimathaea, his name Joseph, who also himself was a disciple to Jesus. And in the evening, there came a man of wealth from Arimathaea, Joseph by name, who was a disciple of Jesus:
Matthew 27:58He went to Pilate and begged to have the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be given to him.*He*, going to Pilate, begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him.
Matthew 27:59So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean sheet of fine linen. And Joseph having got the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen,
Matthew 27:60He then laid it in his own new tomb which he had hewn in the solid rock, and after rolling a great stone against the door of the tomb he went home.and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn in the rock; and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, went away. And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away.
Matthew 27:61Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were both present there, sitting opposite to the sepulchre. But Mary of Magdala was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the sepulchre. And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead.
Matthew 27:62On the next day, the day after the Preparation, the High Priests and the Pharisees came in a body to Pilate. Now on the morrow, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,Now on the day after the getting ready of the Passover, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,
Matthew 27:63"Sir," they said, "we recollect that during his lifetime that impostor pretended that after two days he was to rise to life again.saying, Sir, we have called to mind that that deceiver said when he was still alive, After three days I arise.Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead.
Matthew 27:64So give orders for the sepulchre to be securely guarded till the third day, for fear his disciples should come by night and steal the body, and then tell the people that he has come back to life; and so the last imposture will be more serious than the first."Command therefore that the sepulchre be secured until the third day, lest his disciples should come and steal him away, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first.Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.
Matthew 27:65"You can have a guard," said Pilate: "go and make all safe, as best you can."And Pilate said to them, Ye have a watch: go, secure it as well as ye know how.Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able.
Matthew 27:66So they went and made the sepulchre secure, sealing the stone besides setting the guard. And they went and secured the sepulchre, having sealed the stone, with the watch [besides].So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them.
