Acts 22:1"Brethren and fathers," he said, "listen to my defence which I now make before you."Brethren and fathers, hear my defence which I now make to you."Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you."
Acts 22:2And on hearing him address them in Hebrew, they kept all the more quiet; and he said,And hearing that he addressed them in the Hebrew tongue, they kept the more quiet; and he says,When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,
Acts 22:3"I am a Jew, born at Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I was carefully trained at the feet of Gamaliel in the Law of our forefathers, and, like all of you to-day, was zealous for God.*I* am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, educated according to [the] exactness of the law of [our] fathers, being zealous for God, as *ye* are all this day;"I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are this day.
Acts 22:4I persecuted to death this new faith, continually binding both men and women and throwing them into prison;who have persecuted this way unto death, binding and delivering up to prisons both men and women;I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
Acts 22:5as the High Priest also and all the Elders can bear me witness. It was, too, from them that I received letters to the brethren in Damascus, and I was already on my way to Damascus, intending to bring those also who had fled there, in chains to Jerusalem, to be punished.as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the elderhood: from whom also, having received letters to the brethren, I went to Damascus to bring those also who were there, bound, to Jerusalem, to be punished. As also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and journeyed to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.
Acts 22:6"But on my way, when I was now not far from Damascus, about noon a sudden blaze of light from Heaven shone round me.And it came to pass, as I was journeying and drawing near to Damascus, that, about mid-day, there suddenly shone out of heaven a great light round about me.It happened that, as I made my journey, and came close to Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from the sky a great light around me.
Acts 22:7I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, "`Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?'And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?'
Acts 22:8"`Who art thou, Lord?' I asked. "`I am Jesus, the Nazarene,' He replied, `whom you are persecuting.'And *I* answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said to me, *I* am Jesus the Nazaraean, whom *thou* persecutest.I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' He said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.'
Acts 22:9"Now the men who were with me, though they saw the light, did not hear the words of Him who spoke to me.But they that were with me beheld the light, [and were filled with fear], but heard not the voice of him that was speaking to me.Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn't understand the voice of him who spoke to me.
Acts 22:10And I asked, "`What am I to do, Lord?' "And the Lord said to me, "`Rise, and go into Damascus. There you shall be told of all that has been appointed for you to do.'And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Rise up, and go to Damascus, and there it shall be told thee of all things which it is appointed thee to do.I said, 'What will I do, Lord?' The Lord said to me, 'Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.'
Acts 22:11"And as I could not see because the light had been so dazzling, those who were with me had to lead me by the arm, and so I came to Damascus. And as I could not see, through the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came to Damascus. When I couldn't see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
Acts 22:12"And a certain Ananias, a pious man who obeyed the Law and bore a good character with all the Jews of the city,And a certain Ananias, a pious man according to the law, borne witness to by all the Jews who dwelt [there],One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived there,
Acts 22:13came to me and standing at my side said, "`Brother Saul, recover your sight.' "I instantly regained my sight and looked up at him.coming to me and standing by me, said to me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And *I*, in the same hour, received my sight and saw him.came to me, and standing by me said to me, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' In that very hour I looked up at him.
Acts 22:14Then he said, `The God of our forefathers has appointed you to know His will, and to see the righteous One and hear Him speak. And he said, The God of our fathers has chosen thee beforehand to know his will, and to see the just one, and to hear a voice out of his mouth; He said, 'The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.
Acts 22:15For you shall be a witness for Him, to all men, of what you have seen and heard.for thou shalt be a witness for him to all men of what thou hast seen and heard. For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.
Acts 22:16And now why delay? Rise, get yourself baptized, and wash off your sins, calling upon His name.'And now why lingerest thou? Arise and get baptised, and have thy sins washed away, calling on his name. Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'
Acts 22:17"After my return to Jerusalem, and while praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance. And it came to pass when I had returned to Jerusalem, and as I was praying in the temple, that I became in ecstasy,It happened that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,
Acts 22:18I saw Jesus, and He said to me, "`Make haste and leave Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.'and saw him saying to me, Make haste and go quickly out of Jerusalem, for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.and saw him saying to me, 'Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.'
Acts 22:19"`Lord,' I replied, `they themselves well know how active I was in imprisoning, and in flogging in synagogue after synagogue those who believe in Thee; And *I* said, Lord, they themselves know that *I* was imprisoning and beating in every synagogue those that believe on thee;I said, 'Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.
Acts 22:20and when they were shedding the blood of Stephen, Thy witness, I was standing by, fully approving of it, and I held the clothes of those who were killing him.'and when the blood of thy witness Stephen was shed, I also myself was standing by and consenting, and kept the clothes of them who killed him. When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.'
Acts 22:21"`Go,' He replied; `I will send you as an Apostle to nations far away.'"And he said to me, Go, for *I* will send thee to the nations afar off.He said to me, 'Depart, for I will send you forth far from here to the Gentiles.'"
Acts 22:22Until they heard this last statement the people listened to Paul, but now with a roar of disapproval they cried out, "Away with such a fellow from the earth! He ought not to be allowed to live."And they heard him until this word, and lifted up their voice, saying, Away with such a one as that from the earth, for it was not fit he should live. They listened to him until he said that, then they lifted up their voice, and said, "Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn't fit to live!"
Acts 22:23And when they continued their furious shouts, throwing their clothes into the air and flinging dust about,And as they were crying, and throwing away their clothes, and casting dust into the air,As they cried out, and threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,
Acts 22:24the Tribune ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and be examined by flogging, in order to ascertain the reason why they thus cried out against him.the chiliarch commanded him to be brought into the fortress, saying that he should be examined by scourging, that he might ascertain for what cause they cried thus against him.the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.
Acts 22:25But, when they had tied him up with the straps, Paul said to the Captain who stood by, "Does the Law permit you to flog a Roman citizen and one too who is uncondemned?"But as they stretched him forward with the thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood [by], Is it lawful for you to scourge a man [who is] a Roman and uncondemned? When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?"
Acts 22:26On hearing this question, the Captain went to report the matter to the Tribune. "What are you intending to do?" he said. "This man is a Roman citizen."And the centurion, having heard it, went and reported it to the chiliarch, saying, What art thou going to do? for this man is a Roman. When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, "Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!"
Acts 22:27So the Tribune came to Paul and asked him, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes," he said. And the chiliarch coming up said to him, Tell me, Art *thou* a Roman? And he said, Yes.The commanding officer came and asked him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?" He said, "Yes."
Acts 22:28"I paid a large sum for my citizenship," said the Tribune. "But I was born free," said Paul. And the chiliarch answered, *I*, for a great sum, bought this citizenship. And Paul said, But *I* was also [free] born. The commanding officer answered, "I bought my citizenship for a great price." Paul said, "But I was born a Roman."
Acts 22:29So the men who had been on the point of putting him under torture immediately left him. And the Tribune, too, was frightened when he learnt that Paul was a Roman citizen, for he had had him bound.Immediately therefore those who were going to examine him left him, and the chiliarch also was afraid when he ascertained that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.
Acts 22:30The next day, wishing to know exactly what charge was being brought against him by the Jews, the Tribune ordered his chains to be removed; and, having sent word to the High Priests and all the Sanhedrin to assemble, he brought Paul down and made him stand before them. And on the morrow, desirous to know the certainty [of the matter] why he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and having brought Paul down set him before them. But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
