Matthew 14:1 | About that time Herod the Tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, | At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, | At that time, Herod, the tetrarch, heard the report concerning Jesus, |
Matthew 14:2 | and he said to his courtiers, "This is John the Baptist: he has come back to life and that is why these miraculous Powers are working in him." | and said to his servants, This is John the baptist: *he* is risen from the dead, and because of this these works of power display their force in him. | and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him." |
Matthew 14:3 | For Herod had arrested John, and had put him in chains, and imprisoned him, for the sake of Herodias his brother Philip's wife, | For Herod had seized John, and had bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother. | For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. |
Matthew 14:4 | because John had persistently said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." | For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. | For John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." |
Matthew 14:5 | And he would have liked to put him to death, but was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a Prophet. | And [while] desiring to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him for a prophet. | When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. |
Matthew 14:6 | But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before all the company, and so pleased Herod | But when Herod's birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod; | But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod. |
Matthew 14:7 | that with an oath he promised to give her whatever she asked. | whereupon he promised with oath to give her whatsoever she should ask. | Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask. |
Matthew 14:8 | So she, instigated by her mother, said, "Give me here on a dish the head of John the Baptist." | But she, being set on by her mother, says, Give me here upon a dish the head of John the baptist. | She, being put forward by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer." |
Matthew 14:9 | The king was deeply vexed, yet because of his repeated oath and of the guests at his table he ordered it to be given her, | And the king was grieved; but on account of the oaths, and those lying at table with [him], he commanded [it] to be given. | The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given, |
Matthew 14:10 | and he sent and beheaded John in the prison. | And he sent and beheaded John in the prison; | and he sent and beheaded John in the prison. |
Matthew 14:11 | The head was brought on a dish and given to the young girl, and she took it to her mother. | and his head was brought upon a dish, and was given to the damsel, and she carried [it] to her mother. | His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother. |
Matthew 14:12 | Then John's disciples went and removed the body and buried it, and came and informed Jesus. | And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and came and brought word to Jesus. | His disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. |
Matthew 14:13 | Upon receiving these tidings, Jesus went away by boat to an uninhabited and secluded district; but the people heard of it and followed Him in crowds from the towns by land. | And Jesus, having heard it, went away thence by ship to a desert place apart. And the crowds having heard [of it] followed him on foot from the cities. | Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a desert place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities. |
Matthew 14:14 | So Jesus went out and saw an immense multitude, and felt compassion for them, and cured those of them who were out of health. | And going out he saw a great crowd, and was moved with compassion about them, and healed their infirm. | Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. |
Matthew 14:15 | But when evening was come, the disciples came to Him and said, "This is an uninhabited place, and the best of the day is now gone; send the people away to go into the villages and buy something to eat." | But when even was come, his disciples came to him saying, The place is desert, and [much of] the [day] time already gone by; dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves. | When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, "The place is a desert, and the time is already past. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food." |
Matthew 14:16 | "They need not go away," replied Jesus; "you yourselves must give them something to eat." | But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give *ye* them to eat. | But Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat." |
Matthew 14:17 | "We have nothing here," they said, "but five loaves and a couple of fish." | But they say to him, We have not here save five loaves and two fishes. | They told him, "We only have here five loaves and two fish." |
Matthew 14:18 | "Bring them here to me," He said, | And he said, Bring them here to me. | He said, "Bring them here to me." |
Matthew 14:19 | and He told all the people to sit down on the grass. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and after looking up to heaven and blessing them, He broke up the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples distributed them to the people. | And having commanded the crowds to recline upon the grass, having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed: and having broken the loaves, he gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds. | He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes. |
Matthew 14:20 | So all ate, and were fully satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they gathered up, filling twelve baskets. | And all ate and were filled, and they took up what was over and above of fragments twelve hand-baskets full. | They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces. |
Matthew 14:21 | Those who had eaten were about 5,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children. | But those that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children. | Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. |
Matthew 14:22 | Immediately afterwards He made the disciples go on board the boat and cross to the opposite shore, leaving Him to dismiss the people. | And immediately he compelled the disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before him to the other side, until he should have dismissed the crowds. | Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. |
Matthew 14:23 | When He had done this, He climbed the hill to pray in solitude. Night came on, and he was there alone. | And having dismissed the crowds, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. And when even was come, he was alone there, | After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone. |
Matthew 14:24 | Meanwhile the boat was far out on the Lake, buffeted and tossed by the waves, the wind being adverse. | but the ship was already in the middle of the sea tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. | But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. |
Matthew 14:25 | But towards daybreak He went to them, walking over the waves. | But in the fourth watch of the night he went off to them, walking on the sea. | In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. |
Matthew 14:26 | When the disciples saw Him walking on the waves, they were greatly alarmed. "It is a spirit," they exclaimed, and they cried out with terror. | And the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, It is an apparition. And they cried out through fear. | When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out for fear. |
Matthew 14:27 | But instantly Jesus spoke to them, and said, "There is no danger; it is I; do not be afraid." | But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Take courage; it is *I*: be not afraid. | But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! I AM! Don't be afraid." |
Matthew 14:28 | "Master," answered Peter, "if it is you, bid me come to you upon the water." | And Peter answering him said, Lord, if it be *thou*, command me to come to thee upon the waters. | Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters." |
Matthew 14:29 | "Come," said Jesus. Then Peter climbed down from the boat and walked upon the water to go to Him. | And he said, Come. And Peter, having descended from the ship, walked upon the waters to go to Jesus. | He said, "Come!" Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus. |
Matthew 14:30 | But when he felt the wind he grew frightened, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Master, save me." | But seeing the wind strong he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, Lord, save me. | But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" |
Matthew 14:31 | Instantly Jesus stretched out His hand and caught hold of him, saying to him, "O little faith, why did you doubt?" | And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, and says to him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt? | Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" |
Matthew 14:32 | So they climbed into the boat, and the wind lulled; | And when they had gone up into the ship, the wind fell. | When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased. |
Matthew 14:33 | and the men on board fell down before him and said, "You are indeed God's Son." | But those in the ship came and did homage to him, saying, Truly thou art God's Son. | Those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!" |
Matthew 14:34 | When they had quite crossed over, they put ashore at Gennesaret; | And having crossed over they came to the land of Gennesaret. | When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. |
Matthew 14:35 | and the men of the place, recognizing Him, sent word into all the country round. So they brought all the sick to Him, | And when the men of that place recognised him, they sent to that whole country around, and they brought to him all that were ill, | When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought to him all who were sick, |
Matthew 14:36 | and they entreated Him that they might but touch the tassel of His outer garment; and all who did so were restored to perfect health. | and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made thoroughly well. | and they begged him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole. |
