Mark 8:1 | About that time there was again an immense crowd, and they found themselves with nothing to eat. So He called His disciples to Him. | In those days, there being again a great crowd, and they having nothing that they could eat, having called his disciples to [him], he says to them, | In those days the multitude being very great, and not having what they may eat, Jesus having called near his disciples, saith to them, |
Mark 8:2 | "My heart yearns over the people," He said; "for this is now the third day they have remained with me, and they have nothing to eat. | I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me already three days and they have not anything they can eat, | `I have compassion upon the multitude, because now three days they do continue with me, and they have not what they may eat; |
Mark 8:3 | If I were to send them home hungry, they would faint on the way, some of them having come a great distance." | and if I should dismiss them to their home fasting, they will faint on the way; for some of them are come from far. | and if I shall let them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way, for certain of them are come from far.` |
Mark 8:4 | "Where can we possibly get bread here in this remote place to satisfy such a crowd?" answered His disciples. | And his disciples answered him, Whence shall one be able to satisfy these with bread here in a desert place? | And his disciples answered him, `Whence shall any one be able these here to feed with bread in a wilderness?` |
Mark 8:5 | "How many loaves have you?" He asked. "Seven," they said. | And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. | And he was questioning them, `How many loaves have ye?` and they said, `Seven.` |
Mark 8:6 | So He passed the word to the people to sit down on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves He blessed them, and broke them into portions and proceeded to give them to His disciples for them to distribute, and they distributed them to the people. | And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. And having taken the seven loaves, he gave thanks, and broke [them] and gave [them] to his disciples, that they might set [them] before [them]; and they set [them] before the crowd. | And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground, and having taken the seven loaves, having given thanks, he brake, and was giving to his disciples that they may set before [them]; and they did set before the multitude. |
Mark 8:7 | They had also a few small fish. He blessed them, and He told His disciples to distribute these also. | And they had a few small fishes, and having blessed them, he desired these also to be set before [them]. | And they had a few small fishes, and having blessed, he said to set them also before [them]; |
Mark 8:8 | So the people ate an abundant meal; and what remained over they picked up and carried away seven hampers of broken pieces. | And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up of fragments that remained seven baskets. | and they did eat and were filled, and they took up that which was over of broken pieces seven baskets; |
Mark 8:9 | The number fed were about 4,000. Then He sent them away, | And they [that had eaten] were about four thousand; and he sent them away. | and those eating were about four thousand. And he let them away, |
Mark 8:10 | and at once going on board with His disciples He came into the district of Dalmanutha. | And immediately going on board ship with his disciples, he came into the parts of Dalmanutha. | and immediately having entered into the boat with his disciples, he came to the parts of Dalmanutha, |
Mark 8:11 | The Pharisees followed Him and began to dispute with Him, asking Him for a sign in the sky, to make trial of Him. | And the Pharisees went out and began to dispute against him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him. | and the Pharisees came forth, and began to dispute with him, seeking from him a sign from the heaven, tempting him; |
Mark 8:12 | Heaving a deep and troubled sigh, He said, "Why do the men of to-day ask for a sign? In solemn truth I tell you that no sign will be given to the men of to-day." | And groaning in his spirit, he says, Why does this generation seek a sign? Verily I say unto you, A sign shall in no wise be given to this generation. | and having sighed deeply in his spirit, he saith, `Why doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.` |
Mark 8:13 | So He left them, went on board again, and came away to the other side. | And he left them, and going again on board ship, went away to the other side. | And having left them, having entered again into the boat, he went away to the other side; |
Mark 8:14 | Now they had forgotten to take bread, nor had they more than a single loaf with them in the boat; | And they forgot to take bread, and save one loaf, they had not [any] with them in the ship. | and they forgot to take loaves, and except one loaf they had nothing with them in the boat, |
Mark 8:15 | and when He admonished them, "See to it, be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod," | And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and [of] the leaven of Herod. | and he was charging them, saying, `Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod,` |
Mark 8:16 | they explained His words to one another by saying, "We have no bread!" | And they reasoned with one another, [saying], It is because we have no bread. | and they were reasoning with one another, saying `Because we have no loaves.` |
Mark 8:17 | He perceived what they were saying, and He said to them, "What is this discussion of yours about having no bread? Do you not yet see and understand? Are your minds so dull of comprehension? | And Jesus knowing [it], says to them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Do ye not yet perceive nor understand? Have ye your heart [yet] hardened? | And Jesus having known, saith to them, `Why do ye reason, because ye have no loaves? do ye not yet perceive, nor understand, yet have ye your heart hardened? |
Mark 8:18 | You have eyes! can you not see? You have ears! can you not hear? and have you no memory? | Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? | Having eyes, do ye not see? and having ears, do ye not hear? and do ye not remember? |
Mark 8:19 | When I broke up the five loaves for the 5,000 men, how many baskets did you carry away full of broken portions?" "Twelve," they said. | When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say to him, Twelve. | When the five loaves I did brake to the five thousand, how many hand-baskets full of broken pieces took ye up?` they say to him, `Twelve.` |
Mark 8:20 | "And when the seven for the 4,000, how many hampers full of portions did you take away?" "Seven," they answered. | And when the seven for the four thousand, the filling of how many baskets of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. | `And when the seven to the four thousand, how many hand-baskets full of broken pieces took ye up?` and they said, `Seven.` |
Mark 8:21 | "Do you not yet understand?" He said. | And he said to them, How do ye not yet understand? | And he said to them, `How do ye not understand?` |
Mark 8:22 | And they came to Bethsaida. And a blind man was brought to Jesus and they entreated Him to touch him. | And he comes to Bethsaida; and they bring him a blind man, and beseech him that he might touch him. | And he cometh to Bethsaida, and they bring to him one blind, and call upon him that he may touch him, |
Mark 8:23 | So He took the blind man by the arm and brought him out of the village, and spitting into his eyes He put His hands on him and asked him, "Can you see anything?" | And taking hold of the hand of the blind man he led him forth out of the village, and having spit upon his eyes, he laid his hands upon him, and asked him if he beheld anything. | and having taken the hand of the blind man, he led him forth without the village, and having spit on his eyes, having put [his] hands on him, he was questioning him if he doth behold anything: |
Mark 8:24 | He looked up and said, "I can see the people: I see them like trees only walking." | And having looked up, he said, I behold men, for I see [them], as trees, walking. | and he, having looked up, said, `I behold men, as I see trees, walking.` |
Mark 8:25 | Then for the second time He put His hands on the man's eyes, and the man, looking steadily, recovered his sight and saw everything distinctly. | Then he laid his hands again upon his eyes, and he saw distinctly, and was restored and saw all things clearly. | Afterwards again he put [his] hands on his eyes, and made him look up, and he was restored, and discerned all things clearly, |
Mark 8:26 | So He sent him home, and added, "Do not even go into the village." | And he sent him to his house, saying, Neither enter into the village, nor tell [it] to any one in the village. | and he sent him away to his house, saying, `Neither to the village mayest thou go, nor tell [it] to any in the village.` |
Mark 8:27 | From that place Jesus and His disciples went to the villages belonging to Caesarea Philippi. On the way He began to ask His disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" | And Jesus went forth and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea-Philippi. And by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Who do men say that I am? | And Jesus went forth, and his disciples, to the villages of Cesarea Philippi, and in the way he was questioning his disciples, saying to them, `Who do men say me to be?` |
Mark 8:28 | "John the Baptist," they replied, "but others say Elijah, and others, that it is one of the Prophets." | And they answered him, saying, John the baptist; and others, Elias; but others, One of the prophets. | And they answered, `John the Baptist, and others Elijah, but others one of the prophets.` |
Mark 8:29 | Then He asked them pointedly, "But you yourselves, who do you say that I am?" "You are the Christ," answered Peter. | And he asked them, But *ye*, who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering says to him, *Thou* art the Christ. | And he saith to them, `And ye who do ye say me to be?` and Peter answering saith to him, `Thou art the Christ.` |
Mark 8:30 | And He strictly forbad them to tell this about Him to any one. | And he charged them straitly, in order that they should tell no man about him. | And he strictly charged them that they may tell no one about it, |
Mark 8:31 | And now for the first time He told them, "The Son of Man must endure much suffering, and be rejected by the Elders and the High Priests and the Scribes, and be put to death, and after two days rise to life." | And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests and of the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise [again]. | and began to teach them, that it behoveth the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and after three days to rise again; |
Mark 8:32 | This He told them plainly; whereupon Peter took Him and began to remonstrate with Him. | And he spoke the thing openly. And Peter, taking him to [him], began to rebuke him. | and openly he was speaking the word. And Peter having taken him aside, began to rebuke him, |
Mark 8:33 | But turning round and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Adversary," He said, "for your thoughts are not God's thoughts, but men's." | But he, turning round and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, Get away behind me, Satan, for thy mind is not on the things that are of God, but on the things that are of men. | and he, having turned, and having looked on his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, `Get behind me, Adversary, because thou dost not mind the things of God, but the things of men.` |
Mark 8:34 | Then calling to Him the crowd and also His disciples, He said to them, "If any one is desirous of following me, let him ignore self and take up his cross, and so be my follower. | And having called the crowd with his disciples, he said to them, Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. | And having called near the multitude, with his disciples, he said to them, `Whoever doth will to come after me let him disown himself, and take up his cross, and follow me; |
Mark 8:35 | For whoever is bent on securing his life will lose it, but he who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News, will secure it. | For whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it. | for whoever may will to save his life shall lose it; and whoever may lose his life for my sake and for the good news` sake, he shall save it; |
Mark 8:36 | Why, what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? | For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? | for what shall it profit a man, if he may gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? |
Mark 8:37 | For what could a man give to buy back his life? | for what should a man give in exchange for his soul? | Or what shall a man give as an exchange for his life? |
Mark 8:38 | Every one, however, who has been ashamed of me and of my teachings in this faithless and sinful age, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in His Father's glory with the holy angels." | For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of man also be ashamed when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. | for whoever may be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also shall be ashamed of him, when he may come in the glory of his Father, with the holy messengers.` |
