John 21:1After this, Jesus again showed Himself to the disciples. It was at the Lake of Tiberias. The circumstances were as follows. After this, Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. And he shewed himself after this manner. After these things Jesus let himself be seen again by the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and it came about in this way.
John 21:2Simon Peter was with Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zabdi, and two others of the Master's disciples. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas, who is called Didymus, and Nathanael, who was of Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.Simon Peter, Thomas named Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were all together.
John 21:3Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." "We will go too," said they. So they set out and went on board their boat; but they caught nothing that night.Simon Peter saith to them: I go a fishing. They say to him: We also come with thee. And they went forth, and entered into the ship: and that night they caught nothing.Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, And we will come with you. They went out and got into the boat; but that night they took no fish.
John 21:4When, however, day was now dawning, Jesus stood on the beach, though the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. But when the morning was come, Jesus stood on the shore: yet the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Now very early in the morning Jesus was there by the edge of the sea (though the disciples were not conscious that it was Jesus).
John 21:5He called to them. "Children," He said, "have you any food there?" "No," they answered.Jesus therefore said to them: Children, have you any meat? They answered him: No.So Jesus said to them, Children, have you taken any fish? They made answer, No.
John 21:6"Throw the net in on the right hand side," He said, "and you will find fish." So they threw the net in, and now they could scarcely drag it along for the quantity of fish.He saith to them: Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find. They cast therefore; and now they were not able to draw it, for the multitude of fishes. And he said to them, Let down the net on the right side of the boat and you will get some. So they put it in the water and now they were not able to get it up again because of the great number of fish.
John 21:7This made the disciple whom Jesus loved say to Peter, "It is the Master." Simon Peter therefore, when he heard the words, "It is the Master," drew on his fisherman's shirt for he had not been wearing it put on his girdle, and sprang into the water. That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved, said to Peter: It is the Lord. Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, girt his coat about him, (for he was naked,) and cast himself into the sea.So the disciple who was dear to Jesus said to Peter, It is the Lord! Hearing that it was the Lord, Peter put his coat round him (because he was not clothed) and went into the sea.
John 21:8But the rest of the disciples came in the small boat (for they were not far from land only about a hundred yards off), dragging the net full of fish. But the other disciples came in the ship, (for they were not far from the land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. And the other disciples came in the little boat (they were not far from land, only about two hundred cubits off) pulling the net full of fish.
John 21:9As soon as they landed, they saw a charcoal fire burning there, with fish broiling on it, and bread close by.As soon then as they came to land, they saw hot coals lying, and a fish laid thereon, and bread. When they got to land, they saw a fire of coals there, with fish cooking on it, and bread.
John 21:10Jesus told them to fetch some of the fish which they had just caught.Jesus saith to them: Bring hither of the fishes which you have now caught.Jesus said to them, Get some of the fish which you have now taken.
John 21:11So Simon Peter went on board the boat and drew the net ashore full of large fish, 153 in number; and yet, although there were so many, the net had not broken.Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, one hundred and fifty-three. And although there were so many, the net was not broken. So Peter went to the boat and came back pulling the net to land, full of great fish, a hundred and fifty-three; and though there was such a number the net was not broken.
John 21:12"Come this way and have breakfast," said Jesus. But not one of the disciples ventured to question Him as to who He was, for they felt sure that it was the Master.Jesus saith to them: Come, and dine. And none of them who were at meat, durst ask him: Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.Jesus said to them, Come and take some food. And all the disciples were in fear of putting the question, Who are you? being conscious that it was the Lord.
John 21:13Then Jesus came and took the bread and gave them some, and the fish in the same way.And Jesus cometh and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish in like manner. Then Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish in the same way.
John 21:14This was now the third occasion on which Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after He had risen from among the dead. This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead. Now this was the third time that Jesus let himself be seen by the disciples after he had come back from the dead.
John 21:15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these others do?" "Yes, Master," was his answer; "you know that you are dear to me." "Then feed my lambs," replied Jesus. When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. Then when they had taken food, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, is your love for me greater than the love of these others? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you are certain of my love for you. He said to him, Then give my lambs food.
John 21:16Again a second time He asked him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" "Yes, Master," he said, "you know that you are dear to me." "Then be a shepherd to my sheep," He said.He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.Again, a second time, he said to him, Simon, son of John, have you any love for me? Yes, Lord, he said, you are certain of my love for you. Then take care of my sheep, said Jesus.
John 21:17A third time Jesus put the question: "Simon, son of John, am I dear to you?" It grieved Peter that Jesus asked him the third time, "Am I dear to you?" "Master," he replied, "you know everything, you can see that you are dear to me." "Then feed my much-loved sheep," said Jesus. He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep. He said to him a third time, Simon, son of John, am I dear to you? Now Peter was troubled in his heart because he put the question a third time, Am I dear to you? And he said to him, Lord, you have knowledge of all things; you see that you are dear to me. Jesus said to him, Then give my sheep food.
John 21:18"In most solemn truth I tell you that whereas, when you were young, you used to put on your girdle and walk whichever way you chose, when you have grown old you will stretch out your arms and some one else will put a girdle round you and carry you where you have no wish to go."Amen, amen I say to thee, when thou wast younger, thou didst gird thyself, and didst walk where thou wouldst. But when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldst not.Truly I say to you, When you were young, you made yourself ready and went wherever you had a desire to go: but when you are old, you will put out your hands and another will make you ready, and you will be taken where you have no desire to go.
John 21:19This He said to indicate the kind of death by which that disciple would bring glory to God; and after speaking thus He said to him, "Follow me."And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had said this, he saith to him: Follow me.Now this he said, pointing out the sort of death by which he would give God glory. And after saying this, he said to him, Come after me.
John 21:20Peter turned round and noticed the disciple whom Jesus loved following the one who at the supper had leaned back on His breast and had asked, "Master, who is it that is betraying you?"Peter turning about, saw that disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said: Lord, who is he that shall betray thee? Then Peter, turning round, saw the disciple who was dear to Jesus coming after them the disciple who was resting on his breast at the last meal, and said, Lord, who is it who will be false to you?
John 21:21On seeing him, Peter asked Jesus, "And, Master, what about him?"Him therefore when Peter had seen, he saith to Jesus: Lord, and what shall this man do?Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, What about this man?
John 21:22"If I desire him to remain till I come," replied Jesus, "what concern is that of yours? You, yourself, must follow me."Jesus saith to him: So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? follow thou me.Jesus said to him, If it is my desire for him to be here till I come back, what is that to you? come yourself after me.
John 21:23Hence the report spread among the brethren that that disciple would never die. Yet Jesus did not say, "He is not to die," but, "If I desire him to remain till I come, what concern is that of yours?"This saying therefore went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die. And Jesus did not say to him: He should not die; but, So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee?So this saying went about among the brothers that this disciple would not undergo death: Jesus, however, did not say that he would not undergo death, but, If it is my desire for him to be here till I come back, what is that to you?
John 21:24That is the disciple who gives his testimony as to these matters, and has written this history; and we know that his testimony is true. This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things, and hath written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. This is the disciple who gives witness about these things and who put them in writing: and we have knowledge that his witness is true.
John 21:25But there are also many other things which Jesus did so vast a number indeed that if they were all described in detail, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would have to be written. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; which, if they were written every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written. And Jesus did such a number of other things that, if every one was recorded, it is my opinion that even the world itself is not great enough for the books there would be.
