Luke 8:1Shortly after this He visited town after town, and village after village, proclaiming His Message and telling the Good News of the Kingdom of God. The Twelve were with Him,And it came to pass afterwards, that he travelled through the cities and towns, preaching and evangelizing the kingdom of God; and the twelve with him:And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,
Luke 8:2and certain women whom He had delivered from evil spirits and various diseases Mary of Magdala, out of whom seven demons had come,And certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities; Mary who is called Magdalen, out of whom seven devils were gone forth,And certain women, who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven demons.
Luke 8:3and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many other women, all of whom contributed to the support of Jesus and His Apostles. And Joanna the wife of Chusa, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others who ministered unto him of their substance. And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered to him of their substance.
Luke 8:4And when a great crowd was assembling, and was receiving additions from one town after another, He spoke a parable to them. And when a very great multitude was gathered together, and hastened out of the cities unto him, he spoke by a similitude. And when many people were collected, and had come to him out of every city, he spoke by a parable:
Luke 8:5"The sower," He said, "goes out to sow his seed; and as he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and is trodden upon, or the birds of the air come and peck it up.The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
Luke 8:6Another part drops upon the rock, and after growing up it withers away for want of moisture. And other some fell upon a rock: and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered, because it lacked moisture.
Luke 8:7Another part falls among the thorns, and the thorns grow up with it and stifle it.And other some fell among thorns, and the thorns growing up with it, choked it.And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.
Luke 8:8But some of the seed falls into good ground, and grows up and yields a return of a hundred for one." While thus speaking, He cried aloud and said, "Listen, every one who has ears to listen with!"And other some fell upon good ground; and being sprung up, yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, he cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bore fruit a hundred-fold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Luke 8:9The disciples proceeded to ask Him what this parable meant. And his disciples asked him what this parable might be.And his disciples asked him, saying, What doth this parable mean?
Luke 8:10"To you," He replied, "it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God; but all others are taught by parables, in order that they may see and yet not see, and may hear and yet not understand. To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see, and hearing may not understand. And he said, To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
Luke 8:11The meaning of the parable is as follows. The seed is God's Message. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
Luke 8:12Those by the way-side are those who have heard, and then the Devil comes and carries away the Message from their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. And they by the way side are they that hear; then the devil cometh, and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved. Those by the way side, are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
Luke 8:13Those on the rock are the people who on hearing the Message receive it joyfully; but they have no root: for a time they believe, but when trial comes they fall away. Now they upon the rock, are they who when they hear, receive the word with joy: and these have no roots; for they believe for a while, and in time of temptation, they fall away. They on the rock are they, who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
Luke 8:14That which fell among the thorns means those who have heard, but as they go on their way, the Message is stifled by the anxieties, wealth and gaieties of time, and they yield nothing in perfection. And that which fell among thorns, are they who have heard, and going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and yield no fruit. And that which fell among thorns are they, who, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
Luke 8:15But as for that in the good ground, it means those who, having listened to the Message with open minds and in a right spirit, hold it fast, and patiently yield a return. But that on the good ground, are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit in patience. But that on the good ground are they, who in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
Luke 8:16"When any one lights a lamp, he does not cover it with a vessel or hide it under a couch; he puts it on a lampstand, that people who enter the room may see the light. Now no man lighting a candle covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it upon a candlestick, that they who come in may see the light. No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they who enter in may see the light.
Luke 8:17There is nothing hidden, which shall not be openly seen; nor anything secret, which shall not be known and come into the light of day.For there is not any thing secret that shall not be made manifest, nor hidden, that shall not be known and come abroad. For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known, and come abroad.
Luke 8:18Be careful, therefore, how you hear; for whoever has anything, to him more shall be given, and whoever has nothing, even that which he thinks he has shall be taken away from him."Take heed therefore how you hear. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given: and whosoever hath not, that also which he thinketh he hath, shall be taken away from him.Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whoever hath, to him shall be given; and whoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
Luke 8:19Then came to Him His mother and His brothers, but could not get near Him for the crowd. And his mother and brethren came unto him; and they could not come at him for the crowd. Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come near to him for the crowd.
Luke 8:20But He was told, "Your mother and brothers are standing on the edge of the crowd, and want to see you."And it was told him: Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. And it was told to him by certain, who said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
Luke 8:21"My mother and my brothers," He replied, "are these who hear God's Message and obey it."Who answering, said to them: My mother and my brethren are they who hear the word of God, and do it.And he answered and said to them, My mother and my brethren are these who hear the word of God, and do it.
Luke 8:22One day He went on board a boat both He and his disciples; and He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side of the Lake." So they set sail. And it came to pass on a certain day that he went into a little ship with his disciples, and he said to them: Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a boat with his disciples: and he said to them, Let us go over to the other side of the lake. And they lanched forth.
Luke 8:23During the passage He fell asleep, and there came down a squall of wind on the Lake, so that the boat began to fill and they were in deadly peril. And when they were sailing, he slept; and there came down a storm of wind upon the lake, and they were filled, and were in danger. But as they sailed, he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
Luke 8:24So they came and woke Him, crying, "Rabbi, Rabbi, we are drowning." Then He roused Himself and rebuked the wind and the surging of the water, and they ceased and there was a calm. And they came and awaked him, saying: Master, we perish. But he arising, rebuked the wind and the rage of the water; and it ceased, and there was a calm. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind, and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
Luke 8:25"Where is your faith?" He asked them. But they were filled with terror and amazement, and said to one another, "Who then is this? for He gives orders both to wind and waves, and they obey Him."And he said to them: Where is your faith? Who being afraid, wondered, saying one to another: Who is this, (think you), that he commandeth both the winds and the sea, and they obey him?And he said to them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid, wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
Luke 8:26Then they put in to shore in the country of the Gerasenes, which lies opposite to Galilee. And they sailed to the country of the Gerasens, which is over against Galilee. And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
Luke 8:27Here, on landing, He was met by one of the townsmen who was possessed by demons for a long time he had not put on any garment, nor did he live in a house, but in the tombs. And when he was come forth to the land, there met him a certain man who had a devil now a very long time, and he wore no clothes, neither did he abide in a house, but in the sepulchres. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, who had demons a long time, and wore no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
Luke 8:28When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? Do not torture me, I beseech you."And when he saw Jesus, he fell down before him; and crying out with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beseech thee, do not torment me.When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee torment me not.
Luke 8:29For already He had been commanding the foul spirit to come out of the man. For many a time it had seized and held him, and they had repeatedly put him in chains and fetters and kept guard over him, but he used to break the chains to pieces, and, impelled by the demon, to escape into the Desert. For he commanded the unclean spirit to go out of the man. For many times it seized him, and he was bound with chains, and kept in fetters; and breaking the bonds, he was driven by the devil into the deserts.(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For often it had caught him, and he was kept bound with chains, and in fetters: and he broke the bands, and was driven by the demon into the wilderness.)
Luke 8:30"What is your name?" Jesus asked him. "Legion," he replied because a great number of demons had entered into him;And Jesus asked him, saying: What is thy name? But he said: Legion; because many devils were entered into him.And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many demons had entered into him.
Luke 8:31and they besought Him not to command them to be gone into the Bottomless Pit.And they besought him that he would not command them to go into the abyss. And they besought him, that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
Luke 8:32Now there was a great herd of swine there feeding on the hill-side; and the demons begged Him to give them leave to go into them, and He gave them leave. And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain; and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
Luke 8:33The demons came out of the man and left him, and entered into the swine; and the herd rushed violently over the cliff into the Lake and were drowned. The devils therefore went out of the man, and entered into the swine; and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were stifled. Then the demons went out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
Luke 8:34The swineherds, seeing what had happened, fled and reported it both in town and country;Which when they that fed them saw done, they fled away, and told it in the city and in the villages. When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.
Luke 8:35whereupon the people came out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus, and they found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were terrified. And they went out to see what was done; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at his feet, clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man out of whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
Luke 8:36And those who had seen it told them how the demoniac was cured. And they also that had seen, told them how he had been healed from the legion. They also who saw it, told them by what means he that was possessed by the demons was healed.
Luke 8:37Then the whole population of the Gerasenes and of the adjacent districts begged Him to depart from them; for their terror was great. So He went on board and returned. And all the multitude of the country of the Gerasens besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear. And he, going up into the ship, returned back again. Then the whole multitude of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes, besought him to depart from them: for they were taken with great fear. And he went into the boat, and returned.
Luke 8:38But the man from whom the demons had gone out earnestly asked permission to go with Him; but He sent him away. Now the man, out of whom the devils were departed, besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying:Now the man out of whom the demons had departed, besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying,
Luke 8:39"Return home," He said, "and tell there all that God has done for you." So he went and published through the whole town all that Jesus had done for him.Return to thy house, and tell how great things God hath done to thee. And he went through the whole city, publishing how great things Jesus had done to him.Return to thy own house, and show how great things God hath done to thee. And he went away and published throughout the whole city, how great things Jesus had done to him.
Luke 8:40Now when Jesus was returning, the people gave Him a warm welcome; for they had all been looking out for Him.And it came to pass, that when Jesus was returned, the multitude received him: for they were all waiting for him.And it came to pass, that, when Jesus had returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
Luke 8:41Just then there came a man named Jair, a Warden of the Synagogue, who threw himself at the feet of Jesus, and entreated Him to come to his house; And behold there came a man whose name was Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at the feet of Jesus, beseeching him that he would come into his house:And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at the feet of Jesus, and besought him that he would come into his house:
Luke 8:42for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And as He went, the dense throng crowded on Him.For he had an only daughter, almost twelve years old, and she was dying. And it happened as he went, that he was thronged by the multitudes. For he had one daughter only, about twelve years of age, and she lay dying. (But as he was going, the people thronged him.
Luke 8:43And a woman who for twelve years had been afflicted with haemorrhage and had spent on doctors all she had, but none of them had been able to cure herAnd there was a certain woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had bestowed all her substance on physicians, and could not be healed by any.And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed by any,
Luke 8:44came close behind Him and touched the tassel of His robe; and instantly her flow of blood stopped. She came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment; and immediately the issue of her blood stopped.Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
Luke 8:45"Who is it touched me?" Jesus asked. And when all denied having done so, Peter and the rest said, "Rabbi, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing on you."And Jesus said: Who is it that touched me? And all denying, Peter and they that were with him said: Master, the multitudes throng and press thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me?And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter, and they that were with him, said, Master, the multitude throng thee, and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
Luke 8:46"Some one has touched me," Jesus replied, "for I feel that power has gone out from me."And Jesus said: Somebody hath touched me; for I know that virtue is gone out from me.And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue hath gone out of me.
Luke 8:47Then the woman, perceiving that she had not escaped notice, came trembling, and throwing herself down at His feet she stated before all the people the reason why she had touched Him and how she was instantly cured. And the woman seeing that she was not hid, came trembling, and fell down before his feet, and declared before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was immediately healed. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared to him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.
Luke 8:48"Daughter," said He, "your faith has cured you; go, and be at peace."But he said to her: Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go thy way in peace. And he said to her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
Luke 8:49While He was still speaking, some one came to the Warden of the Synagogue from his house and said, "Your daughter is dead; trouble the Rabbi no further."As he was yet speaking, there cometh one to the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him: Thy daughter is dead, trouble him not. While he was yet speaking, there cometh one from the house of the ruler of the synagogue, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead: trouble not the Master.
Luke 8:50Jesus heard the words and said to him, "Have no fear. Only believe, and she shall be restored to life."And Jesus hearing this word, answered the father of the maid: Fear not; believe only, and she shall be safe. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be healed.
Luke 8:51So He came to the house, but allowed no one to go in with Him but Peter and John and James and the girl's father and mother. And when he was come to the house, he suffered not any man to go in with him, but Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the maiden. And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.
Luke 8:52The people were all weeping aloud and beating their breasts for her; but He said, "Leave off wailing; for she is not dead, but asleep."And all wept and mourned for her. But he said: Weep not; the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And all wept and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not: she is not dead, but sleepeth.
Luke 8:53And they jeered at Him, knowing that she was dead. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. And they derided him, knowing that she was dead.
Luke 8:54He, however, took her by the hand and called aloud, "Child, awake!"But he taking her by the hand, cried out, saying: Maid, arise. And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
Luke 8:55And her spirit returned, and instantly she stood up; and He directed them to give her some food. And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And he bid them give her to eat.And her spirit came again, and she arose immediately: and he commanded to give her food.
Luke 8:56Her parents were astounded; but He forbad them to mention the matter to any one.And her parents were astonished, whom he charged to tell no man what was done. And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
