Hebrews 5:1For every High Priest is chosen from among men, and is appointed to act on behalf of men in matters relating to God, in order to offer both gifts and sin-offerings,For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: Every high priest who is taken from among men is given his position to take care of the interests of men in those things which have to do with God, so that he may make offerings for sins.
Hebrews 5:2and must be one who is able to bear patiently with the ignorant and erring, because he himself also is beset with infirmity.Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. He is able to have feeling for those who have no knowledge and for those who are wandering from the true way, because he himself is feeble;
Hebrews 5:3And for this reason he is required to offer sin-offerings not only for the people but also for himself.And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And being feeble, he has to make sin-offerings for himself as well as for the people.
Hebrews 5:4And no one takes this honourable office upon himself, but only accepts it when called to it by God, as Aaron was.And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. And no man who is not given authority by God, as Aaron was, takes this honour for himself.
Hebrews 5:5So Christ also did not claim for Himself the honour of being made High Priest, but was appointed to it by Him who said to Him, "My Son art Thou: I have to-day become Thy Father;"So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. In the same way Christ did not take for himself the glory of being made a high priest, but was given it by him who said, You are my Son, this day I have given you being:
Hebrews 5:6as also in another passage He says, "Thou art a priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek."As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. As he says in another place, You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 5:7For Jesus during his earthly life offered up prayers and entreaties, crying aloud and weeping as He pleaded with Him who was able to bring Him in safety out of death, and He was delivered from the terror from which He shrank.Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Who in the days of his flesh, having sent up prayers and requests with strong crying and weeping to him who was able to give him salvation from death, had his prayer answered because of his fear of God.
Hebrews 5:8Although He was God's Son, yet He learned obedience from the sufferings which He endured;Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And though he was a Son, through the pain which he underwent, the knowledge came to him of what it was to be under God's orders;
Hebrews 5:9and so, having been made perfect, He became to all who obey Him the source and giver of eternal salvation.And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; And when he had been made complete, he became the giver of eternal salvation to all those who are under his orders;
Hebrews 5:10For God Himself addresses Him as a High Priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek.Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. Being named by God a high priest of the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 5:11Concerning Him we have much to say, and much that it would be difficult to make clear to you, since you have become so dull of apprehension.Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. Of whom we have much to say which it is hard to make clear, because you are slow of hearing.
Hebrews 5:12For although, considering the long time you have been believers, you ought now to be teachers of others, you really need some one to teach you over again the very rudiments of the truths of God, and you have come to require milk instead of solid food.For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. And though by this time it would be right for you to be teachers, you still have need of someone to give you teaching about the first simple rules of God's revelation; you have become like babies who have need of milk, and not of solid food.
Hebrews 5:13By people who live on milk I mean those who are imperfectly acquainted with the teaching concerning righteousness.For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. For everyone who takes milk is without experience of the word of righteousness: he is a child.
Hebrews 5:14Such persons are mere babes. But solid food is for adults that is, for those who through constant practice have their spiritual faculties carefully trained to distinguish good from evil.But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. But solid food is for men of full growth, even for those whose senses are trained by use to see what is good and what is evil.
