| James 2:1 | My brethren, you must not make distinctions between one man and another while you are striving to maintain faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is our glory. | My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. | My brothers, if you have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory, do not take a man's position into account. |
| James 2:2 | For suppose a man comes into one of your meetings wearing gold rings and fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man wearing shabby clothes, | For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; | For if a man comes into your Synagogue in fair clothing and with a gold ring, and a poor man comes in with dirty clothing, |
| James 2:3 | and you pay court to the one who wears the fine clothes, and say, "Sit here; this is a good place;" while to the poor man you say, "Stand there, or sit on the floor at my feet;" | And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: | And you do honour to the man in fair clothing and say, Come here and take this good place; and you say to the poor man, Take up your position there, or be seated at my feet; |
| James 2:4 | is it not plain that in your hearts you have little faith, seeing that you have become judges full of wrong thoughts? | Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? | Is there not a division in your minds? have you not become judges with evil thoughts? |
| James 2:5 | Listen, my dearly-loved brethren. Has not God chosen those whom the world regards as poor to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom which He has promised to those that love Him? | Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? | Give ear, my dear brothers; are not those who are poor in the things of this world marked out by God to have faith as their wealth, and for their heritage the kingdom which he has said he will give to those who have love for him? |
| James 2:6 | But *you* have put dishonour upon the poor man. Yet is it not the rich who grind you down? Are not they the very people who drag you into the Law courts? | But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? | But you have put the poor man to shame. Are not the men of wealth rulers over you? do they not take you by force before their judges? |
| James 2:7 | and the very people who speak evil of the noble Name by which you are called? | Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? | Do they not say evil of the holy name which was given to you? |
| James 2:8 | If, however, you are keeping the Law as supreme, in obedience to the Commandment which says "You are to love your fellow man just as you love yourself," you are acting rightly. | If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: | But if you keep the greatest law of all, as it is given in the holy Writings, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself, you do well: |
| James 2:9 | But if you are making distinctions between one man and another, you are guilty of sin, and are convicted by the Law as offenders. | But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. | But if you take a man's position into account, you do evil, and are judged as evil-doers by the law. |
| James 2:10 | A man who has kept the Law as a whole, but has failed to keep some one command, has become guilty of violating all. | For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. | For anyone who keeps all the law, but makes a slip in one point, is judged to have gone against it all. |
| James 2:11 | For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder," and if you are a murderer, although not an adulterer, you have become an offender against the Law. | For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. | For he who said, Do not be untrue in married life, is the same who said, Put no man to death. Now if you are not untrue in married life, but you put a man to death, the law is broken. |
| James 2:12 | Speak and act as those should who are expecting to be judged by the Law of freedom. | So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. | Let your words and your acts be those of men who are to be judged by the law which makes free. |
| James 2:13 | For he who shows no mercy will have judgement given against him without mercy; but mercy triumphs over judgement. | For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. | For the man who has had no mercy will be judged without mercy, but mercy takes pride in overcoming judging. |
| James 2:14 | What good is it, my brethren, if a man professes to have faith, and yet his actions do not correspond? Can such faith save him? | What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? | What use is it, my brothers, for a man to say that he has faith, if he does nothing? will such a faith give him salvation? |
| James 2:15 | Suppose a Christian brother or sister is poorly clad or lacks daily food, | If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, | If a brother or a sister is without clothing and in need of the day's food, |
| James 2:16 | and one of you says to them, "I wish you well; keep yourselves warm and well fed," and yet you do not give them what they need; what is the use of that? | And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? | And one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warm and full of food; but you do not give them the things of which their bodies have need, what profit is there in this? |
| James 2:17 | So also faith, if it is unaccompanied by obedience, has no life in it so long as it stands alone. | Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. | Even so faith without works is dead. |
| James 2:18 | Nay, some one will say, "You have faith, I have actions: prove to me your faith apart from corresponding actions and I will prove mine to you by my actions. | Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. | But a man may say, You have faith and I have works; let me see your faith without your works, and I will make my faith clear to you by my works. |
| James 2:19 | You believe that God is one, and you are quite right: evil spirits also believe this, and shudder." | Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. | You have the belief that God is one, and you do well: the evil spirits have the same belief, shaking with fear. |
| James 2:20 | But, idle boaster, are you willing to be taught how it is that faith apart from obedience is worthless? Take the case of Abraham our forefather. | But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? | Do you not see, O foolish man, that faith without works is of no use? |
| James 2:21 | Was it, or was it not, because of his actions that he was declared to be righteous as the result of his having offered up his son Isaac upon the altar? | Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? | Was not the righteousness of Abraham our father judged by his works, when he made an offering of Isaac his son on the altar? |
| James 2:22 | You notice that his faith was co-operating with his actions, and that by his actions his faith was perfected; | Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? | You see that his faith was helping his works and was made complete by them; |
