Matthew 5:1Seeing the multitude of people, Jesus went up the Hill. There He seated Himself, and when His disciples came to Him,And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And seeing great masses of people he went up into the mountain; and when he was seated his disciples came to him.
Matthew 5:2He proceeded to teach them, and said:And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, And with these words he gave them teaching, saying,
Matthew 5:3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy are the poor in spirit: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Matthew 5:4"Blessed are the mourners, for they shall be comforted.Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Happy are those who are sad: for they will be comforted.
Matthew 5:5"Blessed are the meek, for they as heirs shall obtain possession of the earth.Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Happy are the gentle: for the earth will be their heritage.
Matthew 5:6"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be completely satisfied.Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Happy are those whose heart's desire is for righteousness: for they will have their desire.
Matthew 5:7"Blessed are the compassionate, for they shall receive compassion.Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Happy are those who have mercy: for they will be given mercy.
Matthew 5:8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Happy are the clean in heart: for they will see God.
Matthew 5:9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for it is they who will be recognized as sons of God.Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Happy are the peacemakers: for they will be named sons of God.
Matthew 5:10"Blessed are those who have borne persecution in the cause of Righteousness, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy are those who are attacked on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven will be theirs.
Matthew 5:11"Blessed are you when they have insulted and persecuted you, and have said every cruel thing about you falsely for my sake.Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Happy are you when men give you a bad name, and are cruel to you, and say all evil things against you falsely, because of me.
Matthew 5:12Be joyful and triumphant, because your reward is great in the Heavens; for so were the Prophets before you persecuted.Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Be glad and full of joy; for great is your reward in heaven: for so were the prophets attacked who were before you.
Matthew 5:13"*You* are the salt of the earth; but if salt has become tasteless, in what way can it regain its saltness? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown away and trodden on by the passers by.Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. You are the salt of the earth; but if its taste goes from the salt, how will you make it salt again? it is then good for nothing but to be put out and crushed under foot by men.
Matthew 5:14*You* are the light of the world; a town cannot be hid if built on a hill-top.Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. You are the light of the world. A town put on a hill may be seen by all.
Matthew 5:15Nor is a lamp lighted to be put under a bushel, but on the lampstand; and then it gives light to all in the house.Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. And a burning light is not put under a vessel, but on its table; so that its rays may be shining on all who are in the house.
Matthew 5:16Just so let your light shine before all men, in order that they may see your holy lives and may give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Even so let your light be shining before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:17"Do not for a moment suppose that I have come to abrogate the Law or the Prophets: I have not come to abrogate them but to give them their completion.Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Let there be no thought that I have come to put an end to the law or the prophets. I have not come for destruction, but to make complete.
Matthew 5:18Solemnly I tell you that until Heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or smallest detail will pass away from the Law until all has taken place. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth come to an end, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will in any way be taken from the law, till all things are done.
Matthew 5:19Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments and teaches others to break them, will be called the least in the Kingdom of the Heavens; but whoever practises them and teaches them, he will be acknowledged as great in the Kingdom of the Heavens.Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then goes against the smallest of these laws, teaching men to do the same, will be named least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who keeps the laws, teaching others to keep them, will be named great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:20For I assure you that unless your righteousness greatly surpasses that of the Scribes and the Pharisees, you will certainly not find entrance into the Kingdom of the Heavens. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, If your righteousness is not greater than the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never go into the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:21"You have heard that it was said to the ancients, `Thou shalt not commit murder', and whoever commits murder will be answerable to the magistrate.Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: You have knowledge that it was said in old times, You may not put to death; and, Whoever puts to death will be in danger of being judged:
Matthew 5:22But I say to you that every one who becomes angry with his brother shall be answerable to the magistrate; that whoever says to his brother `Raca,' shall be answerable to the Sanhedrin; and that whoever says, `You fool!' shall be liable to the Gehenna of Fire. But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be in danger of being judged; and he who says to his brother, Raca, will be in danger from the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, You foolish one, will be in danger of the hell of fire.
Matthew 5:23If therefore when you are offering your gift upon the altar, you remember that your brother has a grievance against you,Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; If then you are making an offering at the altar and there it comes to your mind that your brother has something against you,
Matthew 5:24leave your gift there before the altar, and go and make friends with your brother first, and then return and proceed to offer your gift.Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. While your offering is still before the altar, first go and make peace with your brother, then come and make your offering.
Matthew 5:25Come to terms without delay with your opponent while you are yet with him on the way to the court; for fear he should obtain judgement from the magistrate against you, and the magistrate should give you in custody to the officer and you be thrown into prison.Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Come to an agreement quickly with him who has a cause against you at law, while you are with him on the way, for fear that he may give you up to the judge and the judge may give you to the police and you may be put into prison.
Matthew 5:26I solemnly tell you that you will certainly not be released till you have paid the very last farthing.Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. Truly I say to you, You will not come out from there till you have made payment of the very last farthing.
Matthew 5:27"You have heard that it was said, `Thou shalt not commit adultery.'Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: You have knowledge that it was said, You may not have connection with another man's wife:
Matthew 5:28But I tell you that whoever looks at a woman and cherishes lustful thoughts has already in his heart become guilty with regard to her.But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. But I say to you that everyone whose eyes are turned on a woman with desire has had connection with her in his heart.
Matthew 5:29If therefore your eye, even the right eye, is a snare to you, tear it out and away with it; it is better for you that one member should be destroyed rather than that your whole body should be thrown into Gehenna. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if your right eye is a cause of trouble to you, take it out and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.
Matthew 5:30And if your right hand is a snare to you, cut it off and away with it; it is better for you that one member should be destroyed rather than that your whole body should go into Gehenna. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if your right hand is a cause of trouble to you, let it be cut off and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.
Matthew 5:31"It was also said, `If any man puts away his wife, let him give her a written notice of divorce.'It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: Again, it was said, Whoever puts away his wife has to give her a statement in writing for this purpose:
Matthew 5:32But I tell you that every man who puts away his wife except on the ground of unfaithfulness causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries her when so divorced commits adultery. But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. But I say to you that everyone who puts away his wife for any other cause but the loss of her virtue, makes her false to her husband; and whoever takes her as his wife after she is put away, is no true husband to her.
Matthew 5:33"Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, `Thou shalt not swear falsely, but shalt perform thy vows to the Lord.'Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: Again, you have knowledge that it was said in old times, Do not take false oaths, but give effect to your oaths to the Lord:
Matthew 5:34But I tell you not to swear at all; neither by Heaven, for it is God's throne;But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: But I say to you, Take no oaths at all: not by the heaven, because it is the seat of God;
Matthew 5:35nor by the earth, for it is the footstool under His feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the City of the Great King.Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Or by the earth, because it is the resting-place for his foot; or by Jerusalem, because it is the town of the great King.
Matthew 5:36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. You may not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.
Matthew 5:37But let your language be, `Yes, yes,' or `No, no.' Anything in excess of this comes from the Evil one.But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. But let your words be simply, Yes or No: and whatever is more than these is of the Evil One.
Matthew 5:38"You have heard that it was said, `Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.'Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: You have knowledge that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
Matthew 5:39But I tell you not to resist a wicked man, but if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well. But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. But I say to you, Do not make use of force against an evil man; but to him who gives you a blow on the right side of your face let the left be turned.
Matthew 5:40If any one wishes to go to law with you and to deprive you of your under garment, let him take your outer one also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And if any man goes to law with you and takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe from him.
Matthew 5:41And whoever shall compel you to convey his goods one mile, go with him two.And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. And whoever makes you go one mile, go with him two.
Matthew 5:42To him who asks, give: from him who would borrow, turn not away.Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Give to him who comes with a request, and keep not your property from him who would for a time make use of it.
Matthew 5:43"You have heard that it was said, `Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.'Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. You have knowledge that it was said, Have love for your neighbour, and hate for him who is against you:
Matthew 5:44But I command you all, love your enemies, and pray for your persecutors;But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; But I say to you, Have love for those who are against you, and make prayer for those who are cruel to you;
Matthew 5:45that so you may become true sons of your Father in Heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the wicked as well as the good, and sends rain upon those who do right and those who do wrong. That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. So that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven; for his sun gives light to the evil and to the good, and he sends rain on the upright man and on the sinner.
Matthew 5:46For if you love only those who love you, what reward have you earned? Do not even the tax-gatherers do that? For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? For if you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? do not the tax-farmers the same?
Matthew 5:47And if you salute only your near relatives, what praise is due to you? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? And if you say, Good day, to your brothers only, what do you do more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same?
Matthew 5:48You however are to be complete in goodness, as your Heavenly Father is complete.Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Be then complete in righteousness, even as your Father in heaven is complete.
