Acts 16:1He also came to Derbe and to Lystra. At Lystra he found a disciple, Timothy by name the son of a Christian Jewess, though he had a Greek father.Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: And he came to Derbe and Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, by name Timotheus, son of a Jewish believing woman, but [the] father a Greek,
Acts 16:2Timothy was well spoken of by the brethren at Lystra and Iconium,Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. who had a [good] testimony of the brethren in Lystra and Iconium.
Acts 16:3and Paul desiring that he should accompany him on his journey, took him and circumcised him on account of the Jews in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek. Him would Paul have go forth with him, and took [him and] circumcised him on account of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew his father that he was a Greek.
Acts 16:4As they journeyed on from town to town, they handed to the brethren for their observance the decisions which had been arrived at by the Apostles and Elders in Jerusalem.And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem. And as they passed through the cities they instructed them to observe the decrees determined on by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem.
Acts 16:5So the Churches went on gaining a stronger faith and growing in numbers from day to day.And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily. The assemblies therefore were confirmed in the faith, and increased in number every day.
Acts 16:6Then Paul and his companions passed through Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Message in the province of Asia.Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, And having passed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia,
Acts 16:7When they reached the frontier of Mysia, they were about to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not permit this.After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. having come down to Mysia, they attempted to go to Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them;
Acts 16:8So, passing along Mysia, they came to Troas.And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. and having passed by Mysia they descended to Troas.
Acts 16:9Here, one night, Paul saw a vision. There was a Macedonian who was standing, entreating him and saying, "Come over into Macedonia and help us."And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a certain Macedonian man, standing and beseeching him, and saying, Pass over into Macedonia and help us.
Acts 16:10So when he had seen the vision, we immediately looked out for an opportunity of passing on into Macedonia, confidently inferring that God had called us to proclaim the Good News to the people there.And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go forth to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to announce to them the glad tidings.
Acts 16:11Accordingly we put out to sea from Troas, and ran a straight course to Samothrace. The next day we came to Neapolis,Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; Having sailed therefore away from Troas, we went in a straight course to Samothracia, and on the morrow to Neapolis,
Acts 16:12and thence to Philippi, which is a city in Macedonia, the first in its district, a Roman colony. And there we stayed some little time.And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. and thence to Philippi, which is [the] first city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city certain days.
Acts 16:13On the Sabbath we went beyond the city gate to the riverside, where we had reason to believe that there was a place for prayer; and sitting down we talked with the women who had come together.And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. And on the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where it was the custom for prayer to be, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had assembled.
Acts 16:14Among our hearers was one named Lydia, a dealer in purple goods. She belonged to the city of Thyateira, and was a worshipper of the true God. The Lord opened her heart, so that she gave attention to what Paul was saying.And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. And a certain woman, by name Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, who worshipped God, heard; whose heart the Lord opened to attend to the things spoken by Paul.
Acts 16:15When she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, "If in your judgement I am a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house." And she made us go there.And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. And when she had been baptised and her house, she besought [us], saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide [there]. And she constrained us.
Acts 16:16One day, as we were on our way to the place of prayer, a slave girl met us who claimed to be inspired and was accustomed to bring her owners large profits by telling fortunes.And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: And it came to pass as we were going to prayer that a certain female slave, having a spirit of Python, met us, who brought much profit to her masters by prophesying.
Acts 16:17She kept following close behind Paul and the rest of us, crying aloud, "These men are the bondservants of the Most High God, and are proclaiming to you the way of salvation."The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. She, having followed Paul and us, cried saying, These men are bondmen of the Most High God, who announce to you [the] way of salvation.
Acts 16:18This she persisted in for a considerable time, until Paul, wearied out, turned round and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out immediately.And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. And this she did many days. And Paul, being distressed, turned, and said to the spirit, I enjoin thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out the same hour.
Acts 16:19But when her owners saw that their hopes of gain were gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them off to the magistrates in the public square.And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, And her masters, seeing that the hope of their gains was gone, having seized Paul and Silas, dragged [them] into the market before the magistrates;
Acts 16:20Then they brought them before the praetors. "These men," they said, "are creating a great disturbance in our city.And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, and having brought them up to the praetors, said, These men utterly trouble our city, being Jews,
Acts 16:21They are Jews, and are teaching customs which we, as Romans, are not permitted to adopt or practise."And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. and announce customs which it is not lawful for us to receive nor practise, being Romans.
Acts 16:22The crowd, too, joined in the outcry against them, till at length the praetors ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods;And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. And the crowd rose up too against them; and the praetors, having torn off their clothes, commanded to scourge [them].
Acts 16:23and, after severely flogging them, they threw them into jail and bade the jailer keep them safely.And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: And having laid many stripes upon them they cast [them] into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely;
Acts 16:24He, having received an order like that, lodged them in the inner prison, and secured their feet in the stocks.Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and secured their feet to the stocks.
Acts 16:25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And at midnight Paul and Silas, in praying, were praising God with singing, and the prisoners listened to them.
Acts 16:26when suddenly there was such a violent shock of earthquake that the prison shook to its foundations. Instantly the doors all flew open, and the chains fell off from every prisoner.And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison shook, and all the doors were immediately opened, and the bonds of all loosed.
Acts 16:27Starting up from sleep and seeing the doors of the jail wide open, the jailer drew his sword and was on the point of killing himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. And the jailor being awakened out of his sleep, and seeing the doors of the prison opened, having drawn a sword was going to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had fled.
Acts 16:28But Paul shouted loudly to him, saying, "Do yourself no injury: we are all here.But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm, for we are all here.
Acts 16:29Then, calling for lights, he sprang in and fell trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas;Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, And having asked for lights, he rushed in, and, trembling, fell down before Paul and Silas.
Acts 16:30and, bringing them out of the prison, he exclaimed, "O sirs, what must I do to be saved?"And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And leading them out said, Sirs, what must I do that I may be saved?
Acts 16:31"Believe on the Lord Jesus," they replied, "and both you and your household will be saved."And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.
Acts 16:32And they told the Lord's Message to him as well as to all who were in his house.And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And they spoke to him the word of the Lord, with all that were in his house.
Acts 16:33Then he took them, even at that time of night, washed their wounds, and he and all his household were immediately baptized;And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed [them] from their stripes; and was baptised, he and all his straightway.
Acts 16:34and bringing the Apostles up into his house, he spread a meal for them, and was filled with gladness, with his whole household, his faith resting on God.And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. And having brought them into his house he laid the table [for them], and rejoiced with all his house, having believed in God.
Acts 16:35In the morning the praetors sent their lictors with the order, "Release those men."And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. And when it was day, the praetors sent the lictors, saying, Let those men go.
Acts 16:36So the jailer brought Paul word, saying, "The praetors have sent orders for you to be released. Now therefore you can go, and proceed on your way in peace."And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. And the jailor reported these words to Paul: The praetors have sent that ye may be let go. Now therefore go out and depart in peace.
Acts 16:37But Paul said to them, "After cruelly beating us in public, without trial, Roman citizens though we are, they have thrown us into prison, and are they now going to send us away privately? No, indeed! Let them come in person and fetch us out."But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. But Paul said to them, Having beaten us publicly uncondemned, us who are Romans, they have cast us into prison, and now they thrust us out secretly? no, indeed, but let them come themselves and bring us out.
Acts 16:38This answer the lictors took back to the praetors, who were alarmed when they were told that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. And the lictors reported these words to the praetors. And they were afraid when they heard they were Romans.
Acts 16:39Accordingly they came and apologized to them; and, bringing them out, asked them to leave the city.And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. And they came and besought them, and having brought them out, asked them to go out of the city.
Acts 16:40Then Paul and Silas, having come out of the prison, went to Lydia's house; and, after seeing the brethren and encouraging them, they left Philippi.And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed. And having gone out of the prison, they came to Lydia; and having seen the brethren, they exhorted them and went away.
