Mark 7:1 | Then the Pharisees, with certain Scribes who had come from Jerusalem, came to Him in a body. | Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. | And the Pharisees and some of the scribes, coming from Jerusalem, are gathered together to him, |
Mark 7:2 | They had noticed that some of His disciples were eating their food with `unclean' (that is to say, unwashed) hands. | And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. | and seeing some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, |
Mark 7:3 | (For the Pharisees and all the Jews being, as they are, zealous for the traditions of the Elders never eat without first carefully washing their hands, | For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. | (for the Pharisees and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands diligently, do not eat, holding what has been delivered by the ancients; |
Mark 7:4 | and when they come from market they will not eat without bathing first; and they have a good many other customs which they have received traditionally and cling to, such as the rinsing of cups and pots and of bronze utensils, and the washing of beds.) | And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. | and [on coming] from the market-place, unless they are washed, they do not eat; and there are many other things which they have received to hold, the washing of cups and vessels, and brazen utensils, and couches), |
Mark 7:5 | So the Pharisees and Scribes put the question to Him: "Why do your disciples transgress the traditions of the Elders, and eat their food with unclean hands?" | Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? | then the Pharisees and the scribes ask him, Why do thy disciples not walk according to what has been delivered by the ancients, but eat the bread with defiled hands? |
Mark 7:6 | "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites," He replied; "as it is written, "`This People honour Me with their lips, while their hearts are far away from Me: | He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. | But he answering said to them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honour me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me. |
Mark 7:7 | But idle is their devotion while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.' | Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. | But in vain do they worship me, teaching [as their] teachings commandments of men. |
Mark 7:8 | "You neglect God's Commandment: you hold fast to men's traditions." | For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. | [For], leaving the commandment of God, ye hold what is delivered by men [to keep] washings of vessels and cups, and many other such like things ye do. |
Mark 7:9 | "Praiseworthy indeed!" He added, "to set at nought God's Commandment in order to observe your own traditions! | And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. | And he said to them, Well do ye set aside the commandment of God, that ye may observe what is delivered by yourselves [to keep]. |
Mark 7:10 | For Moses said, `Honour thy father and thy mother' and again, `He who curses father or mother, let him die the death.' | For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: | For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, he who speaks ill of father or mother, let him surely die. |
Mark 7:11 | But *you* say, `If a man says to his father or mother, It is a Korban (that is, a thing devoted to God), whatever it is, which otherwise you would have received from me ' | But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. | But *ye* say, If a man say to his father or his mother, [It is] corban (that is, gift), whatsoever thou mightest have profit from me by ... |
Mark 7:12 | And so you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or mother, | And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; | And ye no longer suffer him to do anything for his father or his mother; |
Mark 7:13 | thus nullifying God's precept by your tradition which you have handed down. And many things of that kind you do." | Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. | making void the word of God by your traditional teaching which ye have delivered; and many such like things ye do. |
Mark 7:14 | Then Jesus called the people to Him again. "Listen to me, all of you," He said, "and understand. | And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: | And having called again the crowd, he said to them, Hear me, all [of you], and understand: |
Mark 7:15 | There is nothing outside a man which entering him can make him unclean; but it is the things which come out of a man that make him unclean." | There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. | There is nothing from outside a man entering into him which can defile him; but the things which go out from him, those it is which defile the man. |
Mark 7:16 | [] | If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. | If any one have ears to hear, let him hear. |
Mark 7:17 | After He had left the crowd and gone indoors, His disciples began to ask Him about this figure of speech. | And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. | And when he went indoors from the crowd, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. |
Mark 7:18 | "Have *you* also so little understanding?" He replied; "do you not understand that anything whatever that enters a man from outside cannot make him unclean, | And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; | And he says to them, Are *ye* also thus unintelligent? Do ye not perceive that all that is outside entering into the man cannot defile him, |
Mark 7:19 | because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and passes away ejected from him?" By these words Jesus pronounced all kinds of food clean. | Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? | because it does not enter into his heart but into his belly, and goes out into the draught, purging all meats? |
Mark 7:20 | "What comes out of a man," He added, "that it is which makes him unclean. | And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. | And he said, That which goes forth out of the man, that defiles the man. |
Mark 7:21 | For from within, out of men's hearts, their evil purposes proceed fornication, theft, murder, adultery, | For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, | For from within, out of the heart of men, go forth evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, |
Mark 7:22 | covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, reviling, pride, reckless folly: | Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: | thefts, covetousness, wickednesses, deceit, licentiousness, a wicked eye, injurious language, haughtiness, folly; |
Mark 7:23 | all these wicked things come out from within and make a man unclean." | All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. | all these wicked things go forth from within and defile the man. |
Mark 7:24 | Then He rose and left that place and went into the neighbourhood of Tyre and Sidon. Here He entered a house and wished no one to know it, but He could not escape observation. | And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. | And he rose up and went away thence into the borders of Tyre and Sidon; and having entered into a house he would not have any one know [it], and he could not be hid. |
Mark 7:25 | Forthwith a woman whose little daughter was possessed by a foul spirit heard of Him, and came and flung herself at His feet. | For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: | But immediately a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell at his feet |
Mark 7:26 | She was a Gentile woman, a Syro-phoenician by nation: and again and again she begged Him to expel the demon from her daughter. | The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. | (and the woman was a Greek, Syrophenician by race), and asked him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter. |
Mark 7:27 | "Let the children first eat all they want," He said; "it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." | But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. | But [Jesus] said to her, Suffer the children to be first filled; for it is not right to take the children's bread and cast it to the dogs. |
Mark 7:28 | "True, Sir," she replied, "and yet the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps." | And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. | But she answered and says to him, Yea, Lord; for even the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. |
Mark 7:29 | "For those words of yours, go home," He replied; "the demon has gone out of your daughter." | And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. | And he said to her, Because of this word, go thy way, the demon is gone out of thy daughter. |
Mark 7:30 | So she went home, and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. | And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. | And having gone away to her house she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed. |
Mark 7:31 | Returning from the neighbourhood of Tyre, He came by way of Sidon to the Lake of Galilee, passing through the district of the Ten Towns. | And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. | And again having left the borders of Tyre and Sidon, he came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. |
Mark 7:32 | Here they brought to Him a deaf man that stammered, on whom they begged Him to lay His hands. | And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. | And they bring to him a deaf [man] who could not speak right, and they beseech him that he might lay his hand on him. |
Mark 7:33 | So Jesus taking him aside, apart from the crowd, put His fingers into his ears, and spat, and moistened his tongue; | And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; | And having taken him away from the crowd apart, he put his fingers to his ears; and having spit, he touched his tongue; |
Mark 7:34 | and looking up to Heaven He sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Open!") | And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. | and looking up to heaven he groaned, and says to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. |
Mark 7:35 | And the man's ears were opened, and his tongue became untied, and he began to speak perfectly. | And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. | And immediately his ears were opened, and the band of his tongue was loosed and he spoke right. |
Mark 7:36 | Then Jesus charged them to tell no one; but the more He charged them, all the more did they spread the news far and wide. | And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; | And he charged them that they should speak to no one [of it]. But so much the more *he* charged them, so much the more abundantly *they* proclaimed it; |
Mark 7:37 | The amazement was extreme. "He succeeds in everything he attempts," they exclaimed; "he even makes deaf men hear and dumb men speak!" | And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. | and they were astonished above measure, saying, He does all things well; he makes both the deaf to hear, and the speechless to speak. |
