Acts 24:1Five days after this, Ananias the High Priest came down to Caesarea with a number of Elders and a pleader called Tertullus. They stated to the Governor the case against Paul. And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul. And after five days the high priest Ananias came down, with some of the ancients, and one Tertullus an orator, who went to the governor against Paul.
Acts 24:2So Paul was sent for, and Tertullus began to impeach him as follows: "Indebted as we are," he said, "to you, most noble Felix, for the perfect peace which we enjoy, and for reforms which your wisdom has introduced to this nation,And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence, And Paul being called for, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: Whereas through thee we live in much peace, and many things are rectified by thy providence,
Acts 24:3in every instance and in every place we accept them with profound gratitude. We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness. We accept it always and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thanksgiving.
Acts 24:4But not to detain you too long I beg you in your forbearance to listen to a brief statement from us.Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words. But that I be no further tedious to thee, I desire thee of thy clemency to hear us in few words.
Acts 24:5For we have found this man Paul a source of mischief and a disturber of the peace among all the Jews throughout the Empire, and a ringleader in the heresy of the Nazarenes. For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: We have found this to be a pestilent man, and raising seditions among all the Jews throughout the world, and author of the sedition of the sect of the Nazarenes.
Acts 24:6He even attempted to profane the Temple, but we arrested him.Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law. Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom, we having apprehended, would also have judged according to our law.
Acts 24:7[]But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, But Lysias the tribune coming upon us, with great violence took him away out of our hands;
Acts 24:8You, however, by examining him, will yourself be able to learn the truth as to all this which we allege against him."Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him. Commanding his accusers to come to thee: of whom thou mayest thyself, by examination, have knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.
Acts 24:9The Jews also joined in the charge, maintaining that these were facts. And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so. And the Jews also added, and said that these things were so.
Acts 24:10Then, at a sign from the Governor, Paul answered, "Knowing, Sir, that for many years you have administered justice to this nation, I cheerfully make my defence. Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself: Then Paul answered, (the governor making a sign to him to speak:) Knowing that for many years thou hast been judge over this nation, I will with good courage answer for myself.
Acts 24:11For you have it in your power to ascertain that it is not more than twelve days ago that I went up to worship in Jerusalem;Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship. For thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days, since I went up to adore in Jerusalem:
Acts 24:12and that neither in the Temple nor in the synagogues, nor anywhere in the city, did they find me disputing with any opponent or collecting a crowd about me.And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: And neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man, or causing any concourse of the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:
Acts 24:13Nor can they prove the charges which they are now bringing against me.Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me. Neither can they prove unto thee the things whereof they now accuse me.
Acts 24:14But this I confess to you that in the way which they style a heresy, I worship the God of our forefathers, believing everything that is taught in the Law or is written in the Prophets,But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets: But this I confess to thee, that according to the way, which they call a heresy, so do I serve the Father and my God, believing all things which are written in the law and the prophets:
Acts 24:15and having a hope directed towards God, which my accusers themselves also entertain, that before long there will be a resurrection both of the righteous and the unrighteous. And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Having hope in God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection of the just and unjust.
Acts 24:16This too is my own earnest endeavour always to have a clear conscience in relation to God and man.And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men. And herein do I endeavour to have always a conscience without offence toward God, and towards men.
Acts 24:17"Now after an interval of several years I came to bring alms to my nation, and to offer sacrifices. Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings. Now after many years, I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings, and vows.
Acts 24:18While I was busy about these, they found me in the Temple purified, with no crowd around me and no uproar; but there were certain Jews from the province of Asia.Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult. In which I was found purified in the temple: neither with multitude, nor with tumult.
Acts 24:19They ought to have been here before you, and to have been my prosecutors, if they have any charge to bring against me.Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me. But certain Jews of Asia, who ought to be present before thee, and to accuse, if they had any thing against me:
Acts 24:20Or let these men themselves say what misdemeanour they found me guilty of when I stood before the Sanhedrin,Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council, Or let these men themselves say, if they found in me any iniquity, when standing before the council,
Acts 24:21unless it was in that one expression which I made use of when I shouted out as I stood among them, "`The resurrection of the dead is the thing about which I am on my trial before you to-day.'"Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day. Except it be for this one voice only that I cried, standing among them, Concerning the resurrection of the dead am I judged this day by you.
Acts 24:22At this point Felix, who was fairly well informed about the new faith, adjourned the trial, saying to the Jews, "When the Tribune Lysias comes down, I will enter carefully into the matter."And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter. And Felix put them off, having most certain knowledge of this way, saying: When Lysias the tribune shall come down, I will hear you.
Acts 24:23And he gave orders to the Captain that Paul was to be kept in custody, but be treated with indulgence, and that his personal friends were not to be prevented from showing him kindness. And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him. And he commanded a centurion to keep him, and that he should be easy, and that he should not prohibit any of his friends to minister unto him.
Acts 24:24Not long after this, Felix came with Drusilla his wife, a Jewess, and sending for Paul, listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. And after some days, Felix, coming with Drusilla his wife, who was a Jew, sent for Paul, and heard of him the faith, that is in Christ Jesus.
Acts 24:25But when he dealt with the subjects of justice, self-control, and the judgement which was soon to come, Felix became alarmed and said, "For the present leave me, and when I can find a convenient opportunity I will send for you."And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. And as he treated of justice, and chastity, and of the judgment to come, Felix being terrified, answered: For this time, go thy way: but when I have a convenient time, I will send for thee.
Acts 24:26At the same time he hoped that Paul would give him money; and for this reason he sent for him the oftener to converse with him.He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him. Hoping also withal, that money should be given him by Paul; for which cause also oftentimes sending for him, he spoke with him.
Acts 24:27But after the lapse of fully two years Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and being desirous of gratifying the Jews, Felix left Paul still in prison. But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound. But when two years were ended, Felix had for successor Portius Festus. And Felix being willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
