John 13:1Now just before the Feast of the Passover this incident took place. Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father; and having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
John 13:2While supper was proceeding, the Devil having by this time suggested to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, the thought of betraying Him, Jesus,And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; And when supper was done, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,)
John 13:3although He knew that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was now going to God,Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and goeth to God;
John 13:4rose from the table, threw off His upper garments, and took a towel and tied it round Him.He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. He riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself.
John 13:5Then He poured water into a basin, and proceeded to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel which He had put round Him.After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. After that, he putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
John 13:6When He came to Simon Peter, Peter objected. "Master," he said, "are *you* going to wash my feet?"Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
John 13:7"What I am doing," answered Jesus, "for the present you do not know, but afterwards you shall know."Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Jesus answered, and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
John 13:8"Never, while the world lasts," said Peter, "shall you wash my feet." "If I do not wash you," replied Jesus, "you have no share with me."Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.
John 13:9"Master," said Peter, "wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.
John 13:10"Any one who has lately bathed," said Jesus, "does not need to wash more than his feet, but is clean all over. And you my disciples are clean, and yet this is not true of all of you."Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. Jesus saith to him: He that is washed, needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all.
John 13:11For He knew who was betraying Him, and that was why He said, "You are not all of you clean."For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean.
John 13:12So after He had washed their feet, put on His garments again, and returned to the table, He said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you?So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you?
John 13:13You call me `The Rabbi' and `The Master,' and rightly so, for such I am.Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am.
John 13:14If I then, your Master and Rabbi, have washed your feet, it is also your duty to wash one another's feet.If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.
John 13:15For I have set you an example in order that you may do what I have done to you.For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.
John 13:16In most solemn truth I tell you that a servant is not superior to his master, nor is a messenger superior to him who sent him.Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him.
John 13:17If you know all this, blessed are you if you act accordingly. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them.
John 13:18I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but things are as they are in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled, which says, `He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me.
John 13:19From this time forward I tell you things before they happen, in order that when they do happen you may believe that I am He.Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he.
John 13:20In most solemn truth I tell you that he who receives whoever I send receives me, and that he who receives me receives Him who sent me."Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. Amen, amen I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.
John 13:21After speaking thus Jesus was troubled in spirit and said with deep earnestness, "In most solemn truth I tell you that one of you will betray me."When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me.
John 13:22The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know to which of them He was referring. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.
John 13:23There was at table one of His disciples the one Jesus loved reclining with his head on Jesus's bosom. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
John 13:24Making a sign therefore to him, Simon Peter said, "Tell us to whom he is referring."Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh?
John 13:25So he, having his head on Jesus's bosom, leaned back and asked, "Master, who is it?"He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it?
John 13:26"It is the one," answered Jesus, "for whom I shall dip this piece of bread and to whom I shall give it." Accordingly He dipped the piece of bread, and took it and gave it to Judas, the son of the Iscariot Simon.Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
John 13:27Then, after Judas had received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. "Lose no time about it," said Jesus to him.And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.
John 13:28But why He said this no one else at the table understood. Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.
John 13:29Some, however, supposed that because Judas had the money-box Jesus meant, "Buy what we require for the Festival," or that he should give something to the poor. For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.
John 13:30So Judas took the piece of bread and immediately went out. And it was night. He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.
John 13:31So when he was gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
John 13:32Moreover God will glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him without delay. If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him.
John 13:33Dear children, I am still with you a little longer. You will seek me, but, as I said to the Jews, `Where I am going you cannot come,' so for the present I say to you.Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.
John 13:34A new commandment I give you, to love one another; that as I have loved you, you also may love one another.A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
John 13:35It is by this that every one will know that you are my disciples if you love one another."By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.
John 13:36"Master," inquired Simon Peter, "where are you going?" "Where I am going," replied Jesus, "you cannot be my follower now, but you shall be later."Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter.
John 13:37"Master," asked Peter again, "why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life on your behalf.Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
John 13:38"You say you will lay down your life on my behalf!" said Jesus; "in most solemn truth I tell you that the cock will not crow before you have three times disowned me."Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice.
