John 19:1Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
John 19:2And the soldiers, twisting twigs of thorn into a wreath, put it on His head, and threw round Him a crimson cloak. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
John 19:3Then they began to march up to Him, saying in a mocking voice, "Hail King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with the palms of their hands. And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
John 19:4Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "See, I am bringing him out to you to let you clearly understand that I find no crime in him."Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
John 19:5So Jesus came out, wearing the wreath of thorns and the crimson cloak. And Pilate said to them, "See, there is the man."Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! Then Jesus came forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith to them, Behold the man!
John 19:6As soon then as the High Priests and the officers saw Him, they shouted "To the cross! To the cross!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," said Pilate; "for I, at any rate, find no crime in him."When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. When therefore the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
John 19:7"We," replied the Jews, "have a Law, and in accordance with that Law he ought to die, for having claimed to be the Son of God."The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
John 19:8More alarmed than ever, Pilate no sooner heard these words than he re-entered the Praetorium and began to question Jesus.When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
John 19:9"What is your origin?" he asked. But Jesus gave him no answer. And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. And went again into the judgment-hall, and saith to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
John 19:10"Do you refuse to speak even to me?" asked Pilate; "do you not know that I have it in my power either to release you or to crucify you?"Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Then saith Pilate to him, Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not, that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
John 19:11"You would have had no power whatever over me," replied Jesus, "had it not been granted you from above. On that account he who has delivered me up to you is more guilty than you are."Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. Jesus answered, Thou couldst have no power against me; except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me to thee hath the greater sin.
John 19:12Upon receiving this answer, Pilate was for releasing Him. But the Jews kept shouting, "If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar's. Every one who sets himself up as king declares himself a rebel against Caesar."And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cesar's friend. Whoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Cesar.
John 19:13On hearing this, Pilate brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judge's seat in a place called the Pavement or in Hebrew, Gabbatha. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down on the judgment-seat, in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
John 19:14It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about six o'clock in the morning. Then he said to the Jews, "There is your king!"And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith to the Jews, Behold your King!
John 19:15This caused a storm of outcries, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" "Am I to crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king, except Caesar," answered the High Priests. But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar.
John 19:16Then Pilate gave Him up to them to be crucified. Accordingly they took Jesus; Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
John 19:17and He went out carrying His own cross, to the place called Skull-place or, in Hebrew, GolgothaAnd he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha:
John 19:18where they nailed Him to a cross, and two others at the same time, one on each side and Jesus in the middle.Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on each side one, and Jesus in the midst.
John 19:19And Pilate wrote a notice and had it fastened to the top of the cross. It ran thus: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
John 19:20Many of the Jews read this notice, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the notice was in three languages Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Many of the Jews then read this title: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
John 19:21This led the Jewish High Priests to remonstrate with Pilate. "You should not write `The King of the Jews,'" they said, "but that he claimed to be King of the Jews."Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
John 19:22"What I have written I have written," was Pilate's answer.Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
John 19:23So the soldiers, as soon as they had crucified Jesus, took His garments, including His tunic, and divided them into four parts one part for each soldier. The tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
John 19:24So they said to one another, "Do not let us tear it. Let us draw lots for it." This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, "They shared my garments among them, and drew lots for my clothing." That was just what the soldiers did. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
John 19:25Now standing close to the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
John 19:26So Jesus, seeing His mother, and seeing the disciple whom He loved standing near, said to His mother, "Behold, your son!"When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
John 19:27Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that time the disciple received her into his own home. Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
John 19:28After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now brought to an end, said that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "I am thirsty."After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
John 19:29There was a jar of wine standing there. With this wine they filled a sponge, put it on the end of a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
John 19:30As soon as Jesus had taken the wine, He said, "It is finished." And then, bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and expired.
John 19:31Meanwhile the Jews, because it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and in order that the bodies might not remain on the crosses during the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was one of special solemnity), requested Pilate to have the legs of the dying men broken, and the bodies removed. The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, (for that sabbath was a great day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
John 19:32Accordingly the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and also of the other who had been crucified with Jesus. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him.
John 19:33Then they came to Jesus Himself: but when they saw that He was already dead, they refrained from breaking His legs. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs:
John 19:34One of the soldiers, however, made a thrust at His side with a lance, and immediately blood and water flowed out.But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came out blood and water.
John 19:35This statement is the testimony of an eye-witness, and it is true. He knows that he is telling the truth in order that you also may believe. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. And he that saw it, testified, and his testimony is true: and he knoweth that he speaketh truth, that ye may believe.
John 19:36For all this took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled which declares, "Not one of His bones shall be broken."For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
John 19:37And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they have pierced."And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
John 19:38After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a secret disciple, asked Pilate's permission to carry away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and removed the body. And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And after this, Joseph of Arimathea (being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore and took the body of Jesus.
John 19:39Nicodemus too he who at first had visited Jesus by night came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, in weight about seventy or eighty pounds. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. And there came also Nicodemus (who at the first came to Jesus by night) and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight.
John 19:40Taking down the body they wrapped it in linen cloths along with the spices, in accordance with the Jewish mode of preparing for burial. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Then they took the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
John 19:41There was a garden at the place where Jesus had been crucified, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been buried. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, in which was never man yet laid.
John 19:42Therefore, because it was the day of Preparation for the Jewish Passover, and the tomb was close at hand, they put Jesus there. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. There they laid Jesus therefore, because of the Jews' preparation-day, for the sepulcher was nigh at hand.
