James 3:1Do not be eager, my brethren, for many among you to become teachers; for you know that we teachers shall undergo severer judgement. My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.
James 3:2For we often stumble and fall, all of us. If there is any one who never stumbles in speech, that man has reached maturity of character and is able to curb his whole nature. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.
James 3:3Remember that we put the horses' bit into their mouths to make them obey us, and so we turn their whole bodies round.Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Indeed, we put bits into the horses' mouths so that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.
James 3:4So too with ships, great as they are, and often driven along by strong gales, yet they can be steered with a very small rudder in whichever direction the caprice of the man at the helm chooses.Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.
James 3:5In the same way the tongue is an insignificant part of the body, but it is immensely boastful. Remember how a mere spark may set a vast forest in flames.Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!
James 3:6And the tongue is a fire. That world of iniquity, the tongue, is placed within us spotting and soiling our whole nature, and setting the whole round of our lives on fire, being itself set on fire by Gehenna. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.
James 3:7For brute nature under all its forms beasts and birds, reptiles and fishes can be subjected and kept in subjection by human nature. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.
James 3:8But the tongue no man or woman is able to tame. It is an ever-busy mischief, and is full of deadly poison. But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
James 3:9With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in God's likeness.Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.
James 3:10Out of the same mouth there proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be.Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
James 3:11In a fountain, are fresh water and bitter sent forth from the same opening?Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Does a spring send forth from the same opening fresh and bitter water?
James 3:12Can a fig-tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine yield figs? No; and neither can salt water yield sweet. Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.
James 3:13Which of you is a wise and well-instructed man? Let him prove it by a right life with conduct guided by a wisely teachable spirit.Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show his deeds done in gentleness of wisdom by his good life.
James 3:14But if in your hearts you have bitter feelings of envy and rivalry, do not speak boastfully and falsely, in defiance of the truth. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth.
James 3:15That is not the wisdom which comes down from above: it belongs to earth, to the unspiritual nature, and to evil spirits. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
James 3:16For where envy and rivalry are, there also are unrest and every vile deed. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
James 3:17The wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceful, courteous, not self-willed, full of compassion and kind actions, free from favouritism and from all insincerity. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:18And peace, for those who strive for peace, is the seed of which the harvest is righteousness. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
