John 9:1As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth. And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth.
John 9:2So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind?"And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
John 9:3"Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him.Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. Jesus answered, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents. But, that the works of God might be revealed in him,
John 9:4We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work.I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.
John 9:5When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
John 9:6After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him,When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, anointed the blind man's eyes with the mud,
John 9:7"Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" the name means `Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see.And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he went away, washed, and came seeing.
John 9:8His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?"The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? The neighbors therefore, and those who saw that he was blind, before, said, "Isn't this he who sat and begged?"
John 9:9"Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man."Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. Others said, "It is he." Still others said, "He is like him." He said, "I am he."
John 9:10"How then were your eyes opened?" they asked. Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? They said therefore to him, "How were your eyes opened?"
John 9:11"He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight."He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. He answered, "A man called Jesus made mud, anointed my eyes, and said to me, "Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash." So I went away and washed, and I received sight."
John 9:12"Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know. Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. Then they asked him, "Where is he?" He said, "I don't know."
John 9:13They brought him to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. They brought him who before was blind to the Pharisees.
John 9:14Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath. And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. It was a Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
John 9:15So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see."Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, "He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and I see."
John 9:16This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. Some therefore of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he doesn't keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" There was division among them.
John 9:17And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied. They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. Therefore they asked the blind man again, "What do you say about him, in that he opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."
John 9:18The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him that he had been blind and had obtained his sight until they called his parents and asked them,But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight,
John 9:19"Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?"And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"
John 9:20"We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind;His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: His parents answered them, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
John 9:21but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it."But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. but how he now sees, we don't know; or who opened his eyes, we don't know. He is of age. Ask him. He will speak for himself."
John 9:22Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue. These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.
John 9:23That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself."Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. Therefore his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."
John 9:24A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner."Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. So they called the man who was blind a second time, and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner."
John 9:25"Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know that I was once blind and that now I can see."He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. He therefore answered, "I don't know if he is a sinner. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see."
John 9:26"What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?"Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? They said to him again, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"
John 9:27"I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?"He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? He answered them, "I told you already, and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?"
John 9:28Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. They became abusive towards him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
John 9:29We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from."We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. We know that God has spoken to Moses. But as for this man, we don't know where he comes from."
John 9:30"Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes! The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. The man answered them, "How amazing! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
John 9:31We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens. Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God, and does his will, he listens to him.
John 9:32From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth.Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.
John 9:33Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing."If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."
John 9:34"You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do *you* teach *us*?" And they put him out of the synagogue. They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. They answered him, "You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?" They threw him out.
John 9:35Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and finding him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"
John 9:36"Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him."He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? He answered, "Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?"
John 9:37"You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you."And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. Jesus said to him, "You have both seen him, and it is he who speaks with you."
John 9:38"I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. He said, "Lord, I believe!" and he worshipped him.
John 9:39"I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind."And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind. Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, that those who don't see may see; and that those who see may become blind."
John 9:40These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are *we* also blind?"And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, "Are we also blind?"
John 9:41"If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!"Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore your sin remains.
