John 18:1After offering this prayer Jesus went out with His disciples to a place on the further side of the Ravine of the Cedars, where there was a garden which He entered Himself and His disciples.When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. These things having said, Jesus went forth with his disciples beyond the brook of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples,
John 18:2Now Judas also, who at that very time was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often resorted there with His disciples.And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. and Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples.
John 18:3So Judas, followed by the battalion and by a detachment of the Temple police sent by the High Priests and Pharisees, came there with torches and lamps and weapons.Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons;
John 18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked them.Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?`
John 18:5"For Jesus the Nazarene," was the answer. "I am he," He replied. (Now Judas who was betraying Him was also standing with them.)They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;` Jesus saith to them, `I am [he];` and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them;
John 18:6As soon then as He said to them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground.As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. when, therefore, he said to them `I am [he],` they went away backward, and fell to the ground.
John 18:7Again therefore He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" "For Jesus the Nazarene," they said.Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Again, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?` and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;`
John 18:8"I have told you," replied Jesus, "that I am he. If therefore you are looking for me, let these my disciples go their way."Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: Jesus answered, `I said to you that I am [he]; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;`
John 18:9He made this request in order that the words He had spoken might be fulfilled, "As for those whom Thou hast given me, I have not lost one."That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. that the word might be fulfilled that he said `Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.`
John 18:10Simon Peter, however, having a sword, drew it, and, aiming at the High Priest's servant, cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest`s servant, and cut off his right ear and the name of the servant was Malchus
John 18:11Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put back your sword. Shall I refuse to drink the cup of sorrow which the Father has given me to drink?"Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, `Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?`
John 18:12So the battalion and their tribune and the Jewish police closed in, and took Jesus and bound Him.Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, The band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him,
John 18:13They then brought Him to Annas first; for Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was High Priest that year.And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year,
John 18:14(It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.")Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.
John 18:15Meanwhile Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so also was another disciple. The latter was known to the High Priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the High Priest's palace.And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. And following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest,
John 18:16But Peter remained standing outside the door, till the disciple who was acquainted with the High Priest came out and induced the portress to let Peter in.But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. and Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter.
John 18:17This led the girl, the portress, to ask Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" "No, I am not," he replied.Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. Then said the maid keeping the door to Peter, `Art thou also of the disciples of this man?` he saith, `I am not;`
John 18:18Now because it was cold the servants and the police had lighted a charcoal fire, and were standing and warming themselves; and Peter too remained with them, standing and warming himself.And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. and the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself.
John 18:19So the High Priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. The chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching;
John 18:20"As for me," replied Jesus, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have continually taught in some synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews are wont to assemble, and I have said nothing in secret.Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Jesus answered him, `I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing;
John 18:21Why do you question me? Question those who heard what it was I said to them: these witnesses here know what I said."Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. why me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.`
John 18:22Upon His saying this, one of the officers standing by struck Him with his open hand, asking Him as he did so, "Is that the way you answer the High Priest?"And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? And he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, `Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?`
John 18:23"If I have spoken wrongly," replied Jesus, "bear witness to it as wrong; but if rightly, why that blow?"Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? Jesus answered him, `If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?`
John 18:24So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the High Priest.Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest.
John 18:25But Simon Peter remained standing and warming himself, and this led to their asking him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "No, I am not."And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, `Art thou also of his disciples?` he denied, and said, `I am not.`
John 18:26One of the High Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? One of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, `Did not I see thee in the garden with him?`
John 18:27Once more Peter denied it, and immediately a cock crowed.Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew. again, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew.
John 18:28So they brought Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium. It was the early morning, and they would not enter the Praetorium themselves for fear of defilement, and in order that they might be able to eat the Passover.Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover;
John 18:29Accordingly Pilate came out to them and inquired, "What accusation have you to bring against this man?"Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, `What accusation do ye bring against this man?`
John 18:30"If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. they answered and said to him, `If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.`
John 18:31"Take him yourselves," said Pilate, "and judge him by your Law." "We have no power," replied the Jews, "to put any man to death."Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: Pilate, therefore, said to them, `Take ye him ye and according to your law judge him;` the Jews, therefore, said to him, `It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;`
John 18:32They said this that the words might be fulfilled in which Jesus predicted the kind of death He was to die.That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.
John 18:33Re-entering the Praetorium, therefore, Pilate called Jesus and asked Him, "Are *you* the King of the Jews?"Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `Thou art the King of the Jews?`
John 18:34"Do you say this of yourself, or have others told it you about me?" replied Jesus.Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Jesus answered him, `From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?`
John 18:35"Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? Pilate answered, `Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?`
John 18:36"My kingdom," replied Jesus, "does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my subjects would have resolutely fought to save me from being delivered up to the Jews. But, as a matter of fact, my kingdom has not this origin."Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Jesus answered, `My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.`
John 18:37"So then *you* are a king!" rejoined Pilate. "Yes," said Jesus, "you say truly that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world to give testimony for the truth. Every one who is a friend of the truth listens to my voice."Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate, therefore, said to him, `Art thou then a king?` Jesus answered, `Thou dost say [it]; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.`
John 18:38"What is truth?" said Pilate. But no sooner had he spoken the words than he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no crime in him.Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. Pilate saith to him, `What is truth?` and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, `I do find no fault in him;
John 18:39But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So shall I release to you the King of the Jews?"But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? and ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, [that] I shall release to you the king of the Jews?`
John 18:40With a roar of voices they again cried out, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. therefore they all cried out again, saying, `Not this one but Barabbas;` and Barabbas was a robber.
