Matthew 14:1About that time Herod the Tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, At that time did Herod the tetrarch hear the fame of Jesus,
Matthew 14:2and he said to his courtiers, "This is John the Baptist: he has come back to life and that is why these miraculous Powers are working in him."And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. and said to his servants, `This is John the Baptist, he did rise from the dead, and because of this the mighty energies are working in him.`
Matthew 14:3For Herod had arrested John, and had put him in chains, and imprisoned him, for the sake of Herodias his brother Philip's wife,For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. For Herod having laid hold on John, did bind him, and did put him in prison, because of Herodias his brother Philip`s wife,
Matthew 14:4because John had persistently said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. for John was saying to him, `It is not lawful to thee to have her,`
Matthew 14:5And he would have liked to put him to death, but was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a Prophet.And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. and, willing to kill him, he feared the multitude, because as a prophet they were holding him.
Matthew 14:6But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before all the company, and so pleased HerodBut when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. But the birthday of Herod being kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and did please Herod,
Matthew 14:7that with an oath he promised to give her whatever she asked.Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. whereupon with an oath he professed to give her whatever she might ask.
Matthew 14:8So she, instigated by her mother, said, "Give me here on a dish the head of John the Baptist."And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And she having been instigated by her mother `Give me (says she) here upon a plate the head of John the Baptist;
Matthew 14:9The king was deeply vexed, yet because of his repeated oath and of the guests at his table he ordered it to be given her,And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. and the king was grieved, but because of the oaths and of those reclining with him, he commanded [it] to be given;
Matthew 14:10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. and having sent, he beheaded John in the prison,
Matthew 14:11The head was brought on a dish and given to the young girl, and she took it to her mother.And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. and his head was brought upon a plate, and was given to the damsel, and she brought [it] nigh to her mother.
Matthew 14:12Then John's disciples went and removed the body and buried it, and came and informed Jesus.And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. And his disciples having come, took up the body, and buried it, and having come, they told Jesus,
Matthew 14:13Upon receiving these tidings, Jesus went away by boat to an uninhabited and secluded district; but the people heard of it and followed Him in crowds from the towns by land.When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. and Jesus having heard, withdrew thence in a boat to a desolate place by himself, and the multitudes having heard did follow him on land from the cities.
Matthew 14:14So Jesus went out and saw an immense multitude, and felt compassion for them, and cured those of them who were out of health.And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. And Jesus having come forth, saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion upon them, and did heal their infirm;
Matthew 14:15But when evening was come, the disciples came to Him and said, "This is an uninhabited place, and the best of the day is now gone; send the people away to go into the villages and buy something to eat."And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. and evening having come, his disciples came to him, saying, `The place is desolate, and the hour hath now past, let away the multitudes that, having gone to the villages, they may buy to themselves food.`
Matthew 14:16"They need not go away," replied Jesus; "you yourselves must give them something to eat."But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And Jesus said to them, `They have no need to go away give ye them to eat.`
Matthew 14:17"We have nothing here," they said, "but five loaves and a couple of fish."And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. And they say to him, `We have not here except five loaves, and two fishes.`
Matthew 14:18"Bring them here to me," He said,He said, Bring them hither to me. And he said, `Bring ye them to me hither.`
Matthew 14:19and He told all the people to sit down on the grass. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and after looking up to heaven and blessing them, He broke up the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples distributed them to the people.And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And having commanded the multitudes to recline upon the grass, and having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he did bless, and having broken, he gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes,
Matthew 14:20So all ate, and were fully satisfied. The broken portions that remained over they gathered up, filling twelve baskets.And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. and they did all eat, and were filled, and they took up what was over of the broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full;
Matthew 14:21Those who had eaten were about 5,000 adult men, without reckoning women and children.And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. and those eating were about five thousand men, apart from women and children.
Matthew 14:22Immediately afterwards He made the disciples go on board the boat and cross to the opposite shore, leaving Him to dismiss the people.And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And immediately Jesus constrained his disciples to go into the boat, and to go before him to the other side, till he might let away the multitudes;
Matthew 14:23When He had done this, He climbed the hill to pray in solitude. Night came on, and he was there alone.And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. and having let away the multitudes, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray, and evening having come, he was there alone,
Matthew 14:24Meanwhile the boat was far out on the Lake, buffeted and tossed by the waves, the wind being adverse.But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. and the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
Matthew 14:25But towards daybreak He went to them, walking over the waves.And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went away to them, walking upon the sea,
Matthew 14:26When the disciples saw Him walking on the waves, they were greatly alarmed. "It is a spirit," they exclaimed, and they cried out with terror.And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. and the disciples having seen him walking upon the sea, were troubled saying `It is an apparition,` and from the fear they cried out;
Matthew 14:27But instantly Jesus spoke to them, and said, "There is no danger; it is I; do not be afraid."But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. and immediately Jesus spake to them, saying, `Be of good courage, I am [he], be not afraid.`
Matthew 14:28"Master," answered Peter, "if it is you, bid me come to you upon the water."And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And Peter answering him said, `Sir, if it is thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters;`
Matthew 14:29"Come," said Jesus. Then Peter climbed down from the boat and walked upon the water to go to Him.And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. and he said, `Come;` and having gone down from the boat, Peter walked upon the waters to come unto Jesus,
Matthew 14:30But when he felt the wind he grew frightened, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Master, save me."But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. but seeing the wind vehement, he was afraid, and having begun to sink, he cried out, saying, `Sir, save me.`
Matthew 14:31Instantly Jesus stretched out His hand and caught hold of him, saying to him, "O little faith, why did you doubt?"And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And immediately Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, laid hold of him, and saith to him, `Little faith! for what didst thou waver?`
Matthew 14:32So they climbed into the boat, and the wind lulled;And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. and they having gone to the boat the wind lulled,
Matthew 14:33and the men on board fell down before him and said, "You are indeed God's Son."Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. and those in the boat having come, did bow to him, saying, `Truly God`s Son art thou.`
Matthew 14:34When they had quite crossed over, they put ashore at Gennesaret;And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. And having passed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret,
Matthew 14:35and the men of the place, recognizing Him, sent word into all the country round. So they brought all the sick to Him,And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; and having recognized him, the men of that place sent forth to all that region round about, and they brought to him all who were ill,
Matthew 14:36and they entreated Him that they might but touch the tassel of His outer garment; and all who did so were restored to perfect health.And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole. and were calling on him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment, and as many as did touch were saved.
