John 18:1 | After offering this prayer Jesus went out with His disciples to a place on the further side of the Ravine of the Cedars, where there was a garden which He entered Himself and His disciples. | When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples. | Jesus, having said these things, went out with his disciples beyond the torrent Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, he and his disciples. |
John 18:2 | Now Judas also, who at that very time was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often resorted there with His disciples. | And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus often resorted thither with his disciples. | And Judas also, who delivered him up, knew the place, because Jesus was often there, in company with his disciples. |
John 18:3 | So Judas, followed by the battalion and by a detachment of the Temple police sent by the High Priests and Pharisees, came there with torches and lamps and weapons. | Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns, and torches, and weapons. | Judas therefore, having got the band, and officers of the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons. |
John 18:4 | Jesus therefore, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked them. | Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth, and said to them, Whom seek ye? | Jesus therefore, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth and said to them, Whom seek ye? |
John 18:5 | "For Jesus the Nazarene," was the answer. "I am he," He replied. (Now Judas who was betraying Him was also standing with them.) | They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them, I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them. | They answered him, Jesus the Nazaraean. Jesus says to them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who delivered him up, stood with them. |
John 18:6 | As soon then as He said to them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground. | As soon then as he had said to them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. | When therefore he said to them, I am [he], they went away backward and fell to the ground. |
John 18:7 | Again therefore He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" "For Jesus the Nazarene," they said. | Then he asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. | He demanded of them therefore again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus the Nazaraean. |
John 18:8 | "I have told you," replied Jesus, "that I am he. If therefore you are looking for me, let these my disciples go their way." | Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: If therefore ye seek me, let these go away: | Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]: if therefore ye seek me, let these go away; |
John 18:9 | He made this request in order that the words He had spoken might be fulfilled, "As for those whom Thou hast given me, I have not lost one." | That the saying might be fulfilled which he spoke, Of them whom thou gavest to me, I have lost none. | that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, [As to] those whom thou hast given me, I have not lost one of them. |
John 18:10 | Simon Peter, however, having a sword, drew it, and, aiming at the High Priest's servant, cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. | Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. | Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and smote the bondman of the high priest and cut off his right ear; and the bondman's name was Malchus. |
John 18:11 | Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put back your sword. Shall I refuse to drink the cup of sorrow which the Father has given me to drink?" | Then said Jesus to Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? | Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it? |
John 18:12 | So the battalion and their tribune and the Jewish police closed in, and took Jesus and bound Him. | Then the band, and the captain, and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, | The band therefore, and the chiliarch, and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him: |
John 18:13 | They then brought Him to Annas first; for Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was High Priest that year. | And led him away to Annas first, (for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that same year.) | and they led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. |
John 18:14 | (It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.") | Now Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. | But it was Caiaphas who counselled the Jews that it was better that one man should perish for the people. |
John 18:15 | Meanwhile Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so also was another disciple. The latter was known to the High Priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the High Priest's palace. | And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. That disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. | Now Simon Peter followed Jesus, and the other disciple. But that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest; |
John 18:16 | But Peter remained standing outside the door, till the disciple who was acquainted with the High Priest came out and induced the portress to let Peter in. | But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple who was known to the high priest, and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. | but Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the porteress and brought in Peter. |
John 18:17 | This led the girl, the portress, to ask Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" "No, I am not," he replied. | Then saith the damsel that kept the door to Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. | The maid therefore, who was porteress, says to Peter, Art thou also of the disciples of this man? He says, I am not. |
John 18:18 | Now because it was cold the servants and the police had lighted a charcoal fire, and were standing and warming themselves; and Peter too remained with them, standing and warming himself. | And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; (for it was cold) and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. | But the bondmen and officers, having made a fire of coals (for it was cold), stood and warmed themselves; and Peter was standing with them and warming himself. |
John 18:19 | So the High Priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. | The high priest then asked Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his doctrine. | The high priest therefore demanded of Jesus concerning his disciples and concerning his doctrine. |
John 18:20 | "As for me," replied Jesus, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have continually taught in some synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews are wont to assemble, and I have said nothing in secret. | Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. | Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I taught always in [the] synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret I have spoken nothing. |
John 18:21 | Why do you question me? Question those who heard what it was I said to them: these witnesses here know what I said." | Why dost thou ask me? ask them who heard me, what I have said to them: behold, they know what I have said. | Why demandest thou of me? Demand of those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, they know what I have said. |
John 18:22 | Upon His saying this, one of the officers standing by struck Him with his open hand, asking Him as he did so, "Is that the way you answer the High Priest?" | And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers who stood by, struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? | But as he said these things, one of the officers who stood by gave a blow on the face to Jesus, saying, Answerest thou the high priest thus? |
John 18:23 | "If I have spoken wrongly," replied Jesus, "bear witness to it as wrong; but if rightly, why that blow?" | Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear testimony of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? | Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou me? |
John 18:24 | So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the High Priest. | (Now Annas had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.) | Annas [then] had sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. |
John 18:25 | But Simon Peter remained standing and warming himself, and this led to their asking him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "No, I am not." | And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore to him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. | But Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, Art thou also of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not. |
John 18:26 | One of the High Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?" | One of the servants of the high priest (being the kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off) saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? | One of the bondmen of the high priest, who was kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, says, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? |
John 18:27 | Once more Peter denied it, and immediately a cock crowed. | Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crowed. | Peter denied therefore again, and immediately [the] cock crew. |
John 18:28 | So they brought Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium. It was the early morning, and they would not enter the Praetorium themselves for fear of defilement, and in order that they might be able to eat the Passover. | Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment-hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. | They lead therefore Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium; and it was early morn. And *they* entered not into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but eat the passover. |
John 18:29 | Accordingly Pilate came out to them and inquired, "What accusation have you to bring against this man?" | Pilate then went out to them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? | Pilate therefore went out to them and said, What accusation do ye bring against this man? |
John 18:30 | "If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you." | They answered and said to him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee. | They answered and said to him, If this [man] were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up to thee. |
John 18:31 | "Take him yourselves," said Pilate, "and judge him by your Law." "We have no power," replied the Jews, "to put any man to death." | Then said Pilate to them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: | Pilate therefore said to them, Take him, ye, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not permitted to us to put any one to death; |
John 18:32 | They said this that the words might be fulfilled in which Jesus predicted the kind of death He was to die. | That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die. | that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die. |
John 18:33 | Re-entering the Praetorium, therefore, Pilate called Jesus and asked Him, "Are *you* the King of the Jews?" | Then Pilate entered into the judgment-hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the King of the Jews? | Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews? |
John 18:34 | "Do you say this of yourself, or have others told it you about me?" replied Jesus. | Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing from thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me? | Jesus answered [him], Dost thou say this of thyself, or have others said it to thee concerning me? |
John 18:35 | "Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?" | Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee to me: What hast thou done? | Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy nation and the chief priests have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done? |
John 18:36 | "My kingdom," replied Jesus, "does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my subjects would have resolutely fought to save me from being delivered up to the Jews. But, as a matter of fact, my kingdom has not this origin." | Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. | Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my servants had fought that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence. |
John 18:37 | "So then *you* are a king!" rejoined Pilate. "Yes," said Jesus, "you say truly that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world to give testimony for the truth. Every one who is a friend of the truth listens to my voice." | Pilate therefore said to him, Art thou a King then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a King. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. | Pilate therefore said to him, Thou art then a king? Jesus answered, Thou sayest [it], that I am a king. I have been born for this, and for this I have come into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice. |
John 18:38 | "What is truth?" said Pilate. But no sooner had he spoken the words than he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no crime in him. | Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find in him no fault. | Pilate says to him, What is truth? And having said this he went out again to the Jews, and says to them, I find no fault whatever in him. |
John 18:39 | But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So shall I release to you the King of the Jews?" | But ye have a custom that I should release to you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release to you the King of the Jews? | But ye have a custom that I release [some] one to you at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews? |
John 18:40 | With a roar of voices they again cried out, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber. | Then they all cried again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. | They cried therefore again all, saying, Not this [man], but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. |
