Mark 7:1 | Then the Pharisees, with certain Scribes who had come from Jerusalem, came to Him in a body. | Then came together to him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, who came from Jerusalem. | And there assembled together unto him the Pharisees and some of the scribes, coming from Jerusalem. |
Mark 7:2 | They had noticed that some of His disciples were eating their food with `unclean' (that is to say, unwashed) hands. | And when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled (that is to say with unwashed) hands, they found fault. | And when they had seen some of his disciples eat bread with common, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault. |
Mark 7:3 | (For the Pharisees and all the Jews being, as they are, zealous for the traditions of the Elders never eat without first carefully washing their hands, | For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands often eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. | For the Pharisees, and all the Jews eat not without often washing their hands, holding the tradition of the ancients: |
Mark 7:4 | and when they come from market they will not eat without bathing first; and they have a good many other customs which they have received traditionally and cling to, such as the rinsing of cups and pots and of bronze utensils, and the washing of beds.) | And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there are, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, and of brazen vessels, and tables. | And when they come from the market, unless they be washed, they eat not: and many other things there are that have been delivered to them to observe, the washings of cups and of pots, and of brazen vessels, and of beds. |
Mark 7:5 | So the Pharisees and Scribes put the question to Him: "Why do your disciples transgress the traditions of the Elders, and eat their food with unclean hands?" | Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands? | And the Pharisees and scribes asked him: Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but they eat bread with common hands? |
Mark 7:6 | "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites," He replied; "as it is written, "`This People honour Me with their lips, while their hearts are far away from Me: | He answered and said to them, Well hath Isaiah prophesied concerning you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. | But he answering, said to them: Well did Isaias prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. |
Mark 7:7 | But idle is their devotion while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.' | But, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. | And in vain to they worship me, teaching doctrines and precepts of men. |
Mark 7:8 | "You neglect God's Commandment: you hold fast to men's traditions." | For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. | For leaving the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, the washing of pots and of cups: and many other things you do like to these. |
Mark 7:9 | "Praiseworthy indeed!" He added, "to set at nought God's Commandment in order to observe your own traditions! | And he said to them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition, | And he said to them: Well do you make void the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition. |
Mark 7:10 | For Moses said, `Honour thy father and thy mother' and again, `He who curses father or mother, let him die the death.' | For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, Whoever curseth father or mother, let him die the death: | For Moses said: Honor thy father and thy mother; and He that shall curse father or mother, dying let him die. |
Mark 7:11 | But *you* say, `If a man says to his father or mother, It is a Korban (that is, a thing devoted to God), whatever it is, which otherwise you would have received from me ' | But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. | But you say: If a man shall say to his father or mother, Corban, (which is a gift,) whatsoever is from me, shall profit thee. |
Mark 7:12 | And so you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or mother, | And ye suffer him no more to do aught for his father or his mother; | And further you suffer him not to do any thing for his father or mother, |
Mark 7:13 | thus nullifying God's precept by your tradition which you have handed down. And many things of that kind you do." | Making the word of God of no effect through your traditions, which ye have delivered: and many such like things ye do. | Making void the word of God by your own tradition, which you have given forth. And many other such like things you do. |
Mark 7:14 | Then Jesus called the people to Him again. "Listen to me, all of you," He said, "and understand. | And when he had called all the people to him, he said to them, Hearken to me every one of you, and understand. | And calling again the multitude unto him, he said to them: Hear ye me all, and understand. |
Mark 7:15 | There is nothing outside a man which entering him can make him unclean; but it is the things which come out of a man that make him unclean." | There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him, can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. | There is nothing from without a man that entering into him, can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man. |
Mark 7:16 | [] | If any man hath ears to hear, let him hear. | If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. |
Mark 7:17 | After He had left the crowd and gone indoors, His disciples began to ask Him about this figure of speech. | And when he had entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. | And when he was come into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him the parable. |
Mark 7:18 | "Have *you* also so little understanding?" He replied; "do you not understand that anything whatever that enters a man from outside cannot make him unclean, | And he saith to them, Are ye so void of understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him. | And he saith to them: So are you also without knowledge? understand you not that every thing from without, entering into a man cannot defile him: |
Mark 7:19 | because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and passes away ejected from him?" By these words Jesus pronounced all kinds of food clean. | Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all kinds of food. | Because it entereth not into his heart, but goeth into the belly, and goeth out into the privy, purging all meats? |
Mark 7:20 | "What comes out of a man," He added, "that it is which makes him unclean. | And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. | But he said that the things which come out from a man, they defile a man. |
Mark 7:21 | For from within, out of men's hearts, their evil purposes proceed fornication, theft, murder, adultery, | For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, | For from within out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, |
Mark 7:22 | covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, reviling, pride, reckless folly: | Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness; | Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. |
Mark 7:23 | all these wicked things come out from within and make a man unclean." | All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. | All these evil things come from within, and defile a man. |
Mark 7:24 | Then He rose and left that place and went into the neighbourhood of Tyre and Sidon. Here He entered a house and wished no one to know it, but He could not escape observation. | And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into a house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. | And rising from thence he went into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon: and entering into a house, he would that no man should know it, and he could not be hid. |
Mark 7:25 | Forthwith a woman whose little daughter was possessed by a foul spirit heard of Him, and came and flung herself at His feet. | For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet: | For a woman as soon as she heard of him, whose daughter had an unclean spirit, came in and fell down at his feet. |
Mark 7:26 | She was a Gentile woman, a Syro-phoenician by nation: and again and again she begged Him to expel the demon from her daughter. | (The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation,) and she besought him that he would cast forth the demon out of her daughter. | For the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophenician born. And she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. |
Mark 7:27 | "Let the children first eat all they want," He said; "it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." | But Jesus said to her, Let the children first be satisfied: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to the dogs. | Who said to her: Suffer first the children to be filled: for it is not good to take the bread of the children, and cast it to the dogs. |
Mark 7:28 | "True, Sir," she replied, "and yet the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps." | And she answered and said to him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crums. | But she answered and said to him: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat under the table of the crumbs of the children. |
Mark 7:29 | "For those words of yours, go home," He replied; "the demon has gone out of your daughter." | And he said to her, For this saying, depart; the demon is gone out of thy daughter. | And he said to her: For this saying go thy way, the devil is gone out of thy daughter. |
Mark 7:30 | So she went home, and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. | And when she had come to her house, she found the demon had gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. | And when she was come into her house, she found the girl lying upon the bed, and that the devil was gone out. |
Mark 7:31 | Returning from the neighbourhood of Tyre, He came by way of Sidon to the Lake of Galilee, passing through the district of the Ten Towns. | And again, departing from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, he came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis. | And again going out of the coasts of Tyre, he came by Sidon to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. |
Mark 7:32 | Here they brought to Him a deaf man that stammered, on whom they begged Him to lay His hands. | And they bring to him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. | And they bring to him one deaf and dumb; and they besought him that he would lay his hand upon him. |
Mark 7:33 | So Jesus taking him aside, apart from the crowd, put His fingers into his ears, and spat, and moistened his tongue; | And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue. | And taking him from the multitude apart, he put his fingers into his ears, and spitting, he touched his tongue: |
Mark 7:34 | and looking up to Heaven He sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Open!") | And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith to him, Effatha, that is, Be opened. | And looking up to heaven, he groaned, and said to him: Ephpheta, which is, Be thou opened. |
Mark 7:35 | And the man's ears were opened, and his tongue became untied, and he began to speak perfectly. | And immediately his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plain. | And immediately his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke right. |
Mark 7:36 | Then Jesus charged them to tell no one; but the more He charged them, all the more did they spread the news far and wide. | And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them; so much the more a great deal they published it; | And he charged them that they should tell no man. But the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal did they publish it. |
Mark 7:37 | The amazement was extreme. "He succeeds in everything he attempts," they exclaimed; "he even makes deaf men hear and dumb men speak!" | And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. | And so much the more did they wonder, saying: He hath done all things well; he hath made both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. |
