Acts 24:1Five days after this, Ananias the High Priest came down to Caesarea with a number of Elders and a pleader called Tertullus. They stated to the Governor the case against Paul. And after five days, Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul. And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.
Acts 24:2So Paul was sent for, and Tertullus began to impeach him as follows: "Indebted as we are," he said, "to you, most noble Felix, for the perfect peace which we enjoy, and for reforms which your wisdom has introduced to this nation,And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done to this nation by thy providence,And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,
Acts 24:3in every instance and in every place we accept them with profound gratitude. We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness. We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.
Acts 24:4But not to detain you too long I beg you in your forbearance to listen to a brief statement from us.Notwithstanding, that I may not be further tedious to thee, I pray thee, that thou wouldst of thy clemency hear us a few words.Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.
Acts 24:5For we have found this man Paul a source of mischief and a disturber of the peace among all the Jews throughout the Empire, and a ringleader in the heresy of the Nazarenes. For we have found this a pestilent man, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ring-leader of the sect of the Nazarenes:For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
Acts 24:6He even attempted to profane the Temple, but we arrested him.Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.
Acts 24:7[]But the chief captain Lysias came and with great violence took him out of our hands,But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,
Acts 24:8You, however, by examining him, will yourself be able to learn the truth as to all this which we allege against him."Commanding his accusers to come to thee: by examining whom, thou thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things of which we accuse him.Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.
Acts 24:9The Jews also joined in the charge, maintaining that these were facts. And the Jews also assented, saying, that these things were so.And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.
Acts 24:10Then, at a sign from the Governor, Paul answered, "Knowing, Sir, that for many years you have administered justice to this nation, I cheerfully make my defence. Then Paul, after the governor had beckoned to him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been for many years a judge to this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:
Acts 24:11For you have it in your power to ascertain that it is not more than twelve days ago that I went up to worship in Jerusalem; That thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship.Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.
Acts 24:12and that neither in the Temple nor in the synagogues, nor anywhere in the city, did they find me disputing with any opponent or collecting a crowd about me.And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither exciting the people to sedition, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:
Acts 24:13Nor can they prove the charges which they are now bringing against me.Neither can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.
Acts 24:14But this I confess to you that in the way which they style a heresy, I worship the God of our forefathers, believing everything that is taught in the Law or is written in the Prophets,But this I confess to thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
Acts 24:15and having a hope directed towards God, which my accusers themselves also entertain, that before long there will be a resurrection both of the righteous and the unrighteous. And have hope towards God, which they themselves also allow, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
Acts 24:16This too is my own earnest endeavour always to have a clear conscience in relation to God and man.And in this I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offense towards God, and towards men.And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
Acts 24:17"Now after an interval of several years I came to bring alms to my nation, and to offer sacrifices. Now after many years, I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings. Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.
Acts 24:18While I was busy about these, they found me in the Temple purified, with no crowd around me and no uproar; but there were certain Jews from the province of Asia.Upon which certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.
Acts 24:19They ought to have been here before you, and to have been my prosecutors, if they have any charge to bring against me.Who ought to have been here before thee, and object if they had aught against me.Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.
Acts 24:20Or let these men themselves say what misdemeanour they found me guilty of when I stood before the Sanhedrin,Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil-doing in me, while I stood before the council,Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
Acts 24:21unless it was in that one expression which I made use of when I shouted out as I stood among them, "`The resurrection of the dead is the thing about which I am on my trial before you to-day.'"Except it is for this one voice, that I cried, standing among them, Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.
Acts 24:22At this point Felix, who was fairly well informed about the new faith, adjourned the trial, saying to the Jews, "When the Tribune Lysias comes down, I will enter carefully into the matter."And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter. And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.
Acts 24:23And he gave orders to the Captain that Paul was to be kept in custody, but be treated with indulgence, and that his personal friends were not to be prevented from showing him kindness. And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister, or come to him.And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.
Acts 24:24Not long after this, Felix came with Drusilla his wife, a Jewess, and sending for Paul, listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
Acts 24:25But when he dealt with the subjects of justice, self-control, and the judgement which was soon to come, Felix became alarmed and said, "For the present leave me, and when I can find a convenient opportunity I will send for you."And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, depart for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee. And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.
Acts 24:26At the same time he hoped that Paul would give him money; and for this reason he sent for him the oftener to converse with him.He hoped also that money would have been given him by Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.
Acts 24:27But after the lapse of fully two years Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and being desirous of gratifying the Jews, Felix left Paul still in prison. But after two years Porcius Festus came as successor to Felix: and Felix willing to show the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound. But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
