Acts 19:1During the stay of Apollos in Corinth, Paul, after passing through the inland districts, came to Ephesus, where he found a few disciples.And it came to pass, that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper region, came to Ephesus; and finding certain disciples,And it came to pass, in Apollos` being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,
Acts 19:2"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you first believed?" he asked them. "No," they replied, "we did not even hear that there is a Holy Spirit."He said to them, Have ye received the Holy Spirit since ye believed? And they said to him, We have not so much as heard whether there is any Holy Spirit.he said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive having believed?` and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;`
Acts 19:3"Into what then were you baptized?" he asked. "Into John's baptism," they replied.And he said to them, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism.and he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?` and they said, `To John`s baptism.`
Acts 19:4"John," he said, "administered a baptism of repentance, bidding the people believe on One who was to come after him; namely, on Jesus."Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people, That they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.And Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe that is, in the Christ Jesus;`
Acts 19:5On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus;When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.and they, having heard, were baptized to the name of the Lord Jesus,
Acts 19:6and when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy.And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke in languages, and prophesied.and Paul having laid on them [his] hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying,
Acts 19:7They numbered in all about twelve men.And all the men were about twelve.and all the men were, as it were, twelve.
Acts 19:8Afterwards he went into the synagogue. There for three months he continued to preach fearlessly, explaining in words which carried conviction the truths which concern the Kingdom of God.And he went into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.And having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God,
Acts 19:9But some grew obstinate in unbelief and spoke evil of the new faith before all the congregation. So Paul left them, and, taking with him those who were disciples, held discussions daily in Tyrannus's lecture-hall.But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spoke evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.and when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus.
Acts 19:10This went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia, Jews as well as Greeks, heard the Lord's Message.And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.And this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks,
Acts 19:11God also brought about extraordinary miracles through Paul's instrumentality.And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:mighty works also not common was God working through the hands of Paul,
Acts 19:12Towels or aprons, for instance, which Paul had handled used to be carried to the sick, and they recovered from their ailments, or the evil spirits left them.So that from his body were brought to the sick, handkerchiefs, or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.so that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them.
Acts 19:13But there were also some wandering Jewish exorcists who undertook to invoke the name of Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches."Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them who had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon [them] to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;`
Acts 19:14There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew of high-priestly family, who were doing this.And there were seven sons of one Sceva a Jew, and chief of the priests, who did so.and there were certain seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest who are doing this thing;
Acts 19:15"Jesus I know," the evil spirit answered, "and Paul I have heard of, but who are you?"And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?and the evil spirit, answering, said, `Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye who are ye?`
Acts 19:16And the man in whom the evil spirit was sprang on two of them, over-mastered them both, and treated them with such violence, that they fled from the house stripped of their clothes and wounded.And the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house,
Acts 19:17All the people of Ephesus, Jews as well as Greeks, came to know of this. There was widespread terror, and they began to hold the name of the Lord Jesus in high honour.And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus: and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.and this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified,
Acts 19:18Many also of those who believed came confessing without reserve what their conduct had been,And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds.many also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts,
Acts 19:19and not a few of those who had practised magical arts brought their books together and burnt them in the presence of all. The total value was reckoned and found to be 50,000 silver coins.Many also of them who used curious arts, brought their books together, and burned them before all men; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.and many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning [them] before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found [it] five myriads of silverlings;
Acts 19:20Thus mightily did the Lord's Message spread and triumph!So mightily grew the word of God, and prevailed.so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing.
Acts 19:21When matters had reached this point, Paul decided in his own mind to travel through Macedonia and Greece, and go to Jerusalem. "After that," he said, "I must also see Rome."After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia, and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying `After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;`
Acts 19:22But he sent two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he himself remained for a while in Roman Asia.So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him Timotheus and Erastus he himself stayed a time in Asia.
Acts 19:23Now just at that time there arose no small commotion about the new faith.And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way,
Acts 19:24There was a certain Demetrius, a silversmith, who made miniature silver sanctuaries of Diana, a business which brought great gain to the mechanics in his employ.For a certain man named Demetrius, a silver-smith, who made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain to the artificers;for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,
Acts 19:25He called his workmen together, and others who were engaged in similar trades, and said to them, "You men well know that our prosperity depends on this business of ours;Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth:whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;
Acts 19:26and you see and hear that, not in Ephesus only but throughout almost the whole province of Asia, this fellow Paul has led away a vast number of people by inducing them to believe that they are not gods at all that are made by men's hands.Moreover, ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away many people, saying, that they are no gods which are made with hands.and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;
Acts 19:27There is danger, therefore, not only that this our trade will become of no account, but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana will fall into utter disrepute, and that before long she will be actually deposed from her majestic rank she who is now worshipped by the whole province of Asia; nay, by the whole world."So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at naught; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia, and the world worshipeth.and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.`
Acts 19:28After listening to this harangue, they became furiously angry and kept calling out, "Great is the Ephesian Diana!"And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!`
Acts 19:29The riot and uproar spread through the whole city, till at last with one accord they rushed into the Theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, two Macedonians who were fellow travellers with Paul.And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theater.and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul`s fellow-travellers.
Acts 19:30Then Paul would have liked to go in and address the people, but the disciples would not let him do so.And when Paul would have entered in to the people, the disciples suffered him not.And on Paul`s purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,
Acts 19:31A few of the public officials, too, who were friendly to him, sent repeated messages entreating him not to venture into the Theatre.And certain of the chief of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theater.and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.
Acts 19:32The people, meanwhile, kept shouting, some one thing and some another; for the assembly was all uproar and confusion, and the greater part had no idea why they had come together.Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused, and the greater part knew not why they had come together.Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;
Acts 19:33Then some of the people crowded round Alexander, whom the Jews had pushed forward; and Alexander, motioning with his hand to get silence, was prepared to make a defence to the people.And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defense to the people.and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander the Jews thrusting him forward and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,
Acts 19:34No sooner, however, did they see that he was a Jew, than there arose from them all one roar of shouting, lasting about two hours. "Great is the Ephesian Diana," they said.But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!`
Acts 19:35At length the Recorder quieted them down. "Men of Ephesus," he said, "who is there of all mankind that needs to be told that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Diana and of the image which fell down from Zeus?And when the town-clerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?
Acts 19:36These facts, then, being unquestioned, it becomes you to maintain your self-control and not act recklessly.Seeing then that these things cannot be contradicted, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
Acts 19:37For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.`For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess;
Acts 19:38If, however, Demetrius and the mechanics who support his contention have a grievance against any one, there are Assize-days and there are Proconsuls: let the persons interested accuse one another.Wherefore, if Demetrius and the artificers who are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court [days] are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.
Acts 19:39But if you desire anything further, it will have to be settled in the regular assembly.But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.`And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;
Acts 19:40For in connexion with to-day's proceedings there is danger of our being charged with attempted insurrection, there having been no real reason for this riot; nor shall we be able to justify the behaviour of this disorderly mob."For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause by which we may give an account of this concourse.for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;`
Acts 19:41With these words he dismissed the assembly.And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.and these things having said, he dismissed the assembly.
